26th Alabama Infantry

Transferred to the 26th Alabama from Company A, 16th Alabama on October 5, 1861. Wounded at Chancellorsville on May 2-3, 1863 and admitted to #9 Hospital on May 8. Later transferred to #10. Sent home as recruiting officer from February 6, 1863 to March 21, 1863. On sick furlough early 1864 and absent without leave since February 18, 1864 as of April, 1864, He did return to duty as he surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865 unassigned. Became wealthy landowner and was elected to House of Representatives on November 5, 1907 in Amory, Monroe County, Mississippi and died in Monroe County on Dec. 11, 1910.

Second Lt. Gaston is the GGrandfather of my friend, Pete. My GGrandfather was Sgt. Will Newlon of the Iowa 3d Infantry. Both men fought the Shiloh battle. In 2005 Pete and I visited this battlefield. By plotting Will's Civil War journal entries of the battle and Shiloh Park records of the 26th Infantry and the 3d Iowa, we ascertained that at one point, very close to the Hornet's Nest, our two ancestors may have been within 50 feet of one another! Buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Huntsville, Alabama, with UDC Cross #226.

Some records indicate that he was in the 38th but his military tombstone says that he was in the 26th.

Records show as W J / Alternate Wilson M374roll32 Wilson John Moore was listed as 6 foot 1 1/2 inches tall. Enlisted December 7, 1861 6 foot 1 1/2 inches tall. Enlisted December 7, 1861. Attached to Chimbarazo Hospital as nurse on February 3, 1863 until February 16, 1864. Present at Andersonville. Wounded in back (actually a little lower if I read the medical jargon correctly) at Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864. Given 60 day furlough and captured in Fayette County and sent to Alton Prison. Signed oath on October 21, 1864 and promised to stay north of Ohio River for remainder of war. Confederate Army learned this and counted him as a deserter.

Comany D 26th Alabama Infantry, and lost his lower left leg at the battle of Chancellorsville, VA on May 3 1863. Name: Pennington, J. E. Enlistment Information: Private Branch: Infantry Regiment: 26th Alabama Regiment Company: D Comments: Hospital Register No. 2636. Date admitted: Oct. 5, 1863. Complaint: None stated. Date returned to duty: Not given. Remarks: Stopped one night. Source: Hospital Register of the General Hospital, Selma, Alabama, preserved in the Ala Dept of Archives.

Was nominated for the Confederate Medal of Honor for his actions at the battle of Chancellorsville 1863. Not clear if he ever received it.

Born in Spartanburg District, South Carolina on March 12, 1838 and enlisted as private on December 7, 1861. Admitted to #21 hospital in Richmond, Virginia on October 14, 1862. Wounded and captured at Gettysburg as Corporal on July 1, 1863. Released from Fort Delaware June 14, 1865 at age 24. Listed residence as Fayette County, Alabama. More than likely brother to Captain Taylor. Filed for pension in Lamar County, Alabama after the war and lived in Covin, Alabama in 1921 Census. Died December 19, 1923 and is buried in Wesley Chapel Methodist Cemetery in Covin.

This is not the same Jesse as the Jesse Jones Wheeler who also served in Co. D 26 Ala Inf.

Enlisted September 5, 1861 as a Private. Promoted on June 1, 1862.Wounded at Malvern Hill, VA with a gunshot wound to the left arm on July 1, 1862 which broke his arm. Present at Andersonville. Applied for relief as maimed in Franklin County Alabama on May 31, 1892. He died November 20, 1902 in Bowie County Texas.His wife Nancy applied for pension in Bowie County Texas in 1930.

Joseph enlisted in the CSA in Sept. 5, 1861-- Company F, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment(O'Neal's) The 26th went to Va. and was attached to Stonewall Jackson's Corp. Records that I have obtained show the following about Joseph Thomas Strawbridge: 1.Entered General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond Va. May 8, 1862 , complaint --bronchitis-- he was transfered to C.S.A. General Hospital, Danville, Va. complaint--febris niterica-- returned to duty , August 8, 1862 2.Received a 30 day furlough January 18, 1863-- received 33 cents a day for rations while on leave-- returned to duty Feb. 18, 1863 3.May 3, 1863 -- wounded at Battle of Chancellorsville, Va. don't know if Joe recovered in time for the Gettisburg Trip 4.Next record shows him at Andersonville on guard duty April 26, 1864 5.Captured at Nashville, Dec 16, 1864 6.Took oath of allegiance at Camp Chase Prison, Ohio -- June 12, 1865

William Richard Clark, sometimes listed as Richard William Clark, was my great grandfather from Dora, Alabama. He is said to have transferred to the Cavalry and was captured at Milledgeville, Ga while in the escort party to President Jefferson Davis. I would be interested in any knowledge of him.

Born 1833 in Franklin Co, TN - Family moved to Marion Co, AL in 1840. A Miller. Enlisted in Capt John S. White's Co, 'The Sonsw of 76' roll dated April 1864 at Andersonville, GA shows him present. wife Angeline Brooks received a Confederate Widow's Pension from the State of Texas. GS moved to TX in 1891, died in Brandon, Hill Co, TX in 1910.

Born 1835 in Franklin Co, TN, moved with Family to Marion Co, AL in 1840. Served only briefly in 26th. Father said served in Rody's (Roddy) Cavalry, probably Co K 4th Alabama - no record other than Father's affidavit supports this. Moved to Fayette Co AL after the war. Died in Union Co MS in 1918

He enlisted as a private in the Army of the Confederacy on 28 Feb 1862. He served in Company I of the 26th Alabama Infantry. He was captured during the battle at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on 3 May 1863, and then sent to City Point, Virginia for exchange on 10 May 1863. He was wounded in neck at the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and captured at a field hospital on 5 Jul 1863. After his capture he was sent to DeCamp General Hospital on David's Island, New York, in Long Island Sound. He was again sent on 12 Sep 1863 to City Point, Virginia, for exchange. Ruben was born about 1844 in probably Wayne County, Miss. He is 13 years old on the 1860 census living in Rankin Miss. the Post Office is at Brandon. The supporting data is thin; however, I believe he enlisted at about age 16 or 17 in mid to late 1864 in Co K. [O'Neal's] 26th Ala. Infantry. I found 2 cards in the archival file. 1st R F Ponder which states he is filed under 2nd R Punder. This is only R F Ponder in the records. In late 1864 with the depletion of the ranks and the need for manpower the CSA govt lowered the age of enlistment and extended the age for older troops. He survived the war and was shot to death in 1887 in a shooting that was found as justifiable homicide by the courts. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed.

William Henderson Sanders and his brother William M. 'Peg' Sanders were both in Company K, 26th Alabama. W.H., call Hensley, married Sarah Carver in 1855 Tuscaloosa County. After she died, he married Emma. He is the grandfather of my grandfather Alf Sanders of Tuscaloosa and Pickens Counties.

John was born in Georgia 3 Sept 1823. He has 62 items in his archival file. He was appointed Major in the 3rd Ala Battalion of Infantry in Oct. 1862 at the camp of instruction at Tuscumbia, Ala. This became part of the 26th Ala. Regt. [O'Neal's]. Captured at Fort Donalson 16 Feb 1862 and sent to Camp Chase, received there 1 Mar 1862 and exchanged 31 July 1862. 3 May 1863 he is seriously wounded at Chancellorsville by grapeshot and is on wounded furlough for some time. He is suffering from Rheumatism. The Regiment is so shot up and depleted they are assigned as guards at Andersonville Prison. He writes several letters pleading to be put back into action. He is sent back to Virginia where he is again wounded on 30 Nov 1864 in the battle of Franklin. He is paroled 16 May 1865 at Meridian, Miss. He is appointed as Col. in the Tuscaloosa Home Guard in 1866. This was a Union sponsored unarmed local Police Force. He died 27 Nov. 1873 at West Point, Clay Co. Miss and buried in the Evergreen Cemetary in that place. He was related to me by a distant marriage.
