Born Franklin Co. N.C. 25 Oct 1802. Married Elizabeth Ramsey 19 March 1829. Asst. Surgeon and Methodist Episcopal Minister. Died 1876,Limestone County,AL. Jan-Feb 1863 absent on sick leave fro 30 days by order of General Braxton Braxx from Feb. 25, 1863.

Capt. Bowling was the son of Major Robert Bowling & Barbara Bassett. His father was from Burke County Georgia & was a Major of Bowling’s Detachment in the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812. His mother was the daughter of Thomas Bassett V, a descendant of British Loyalists & one of the earliest settlers of Washington County, Alabama. Capt. R. L. Bowling of Company A, 32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment (aka Wilson’s Guards) was elected 1st Lt. when the company was formed in St. Stephens, AL but eventually achieved the rank of Captain when the Regiment was mustered in Mobile, AL in 1862 & the officers above him were promoted. He was listed as severely wounded on the list of casualties from the Battle of Murfreesboro (a.k.a. The Battle of Stones River), TN on December 31, 1862. He was relieved from service after his wounding & returned home to Washington County, where he was appointed Sheriff in 1873. During his career as sheriff in the Reconstruction era, the government sent an official to hold elections to move the county seat from St. Stephens to Chatom, AL. Capt. Bowling, with threatening words & the use of his pistol, kept the official from holding the election. The county seat remained in St. Stephens for the next three decades until it was eventually moved to Chatom in 1907. Capt. Bowling's eldest son, T. C. Bowling, built a Post Office & General Store near Capt. Bowling's old home in 1896 & called it 'Leroy', in honor of his father. The town the Post Office is located in is now known as 'Leroy' for that reason.

Signed up as SB Morgan. He was a grocer looking for a little adventure. He enlisted on Jan 20, 1862, leaving his pregnant wife, Jane (Donald) and 3 sons in Black's Bluff. He caught the measles and died May 16/17 1862. He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Confederate Rest Row 1, #1, in Mobile, Ala. Photocopies of his letters are preserved in Jane's Florida Widow's Pension at http://www.floridamemory.com under the name 'Burl S Morgan'. he was my gggrandfather. wounded at lookout mtn/missionary ridge. took minnie ball in knee later in unknown location that ended service. Buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Leakesville, Greene County, Mississippi.

He came in as a 2nd Lieutenant and resigned as a Captain in Feb 1863 due to a disability. I have National Archive information.

Peter is my Great Granddad, he joined in Mobile Ala. at Camp Goodwin in April 1862. He made it through the war and his unit surrendered at Spanish Fort in Meridian, Miss. on May 4th. 1865.

Killed at the Battle of Jonesborough, GA on August 31, 1864. Buried in unknown grave.

Brother of Daniel McLeod Killed by the invader at Murfreesboro

Abraham was 34 when he enlisted at Woods Bluff Ala. on 9 April 1862 for three years or the war. Mustered at Mobile. Discharged by surgeons certificate due to wounds on 26 Aug 1862 at Graham Station, Tenn. Records indicate that he Enlisted again 15 Sept 1864 in the State Militia [Home Guard] with rank of 2nd Corporal. He was the Father in Law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

THEY BOTH WERE CAPTURED THE 16th OF DECEMBER 1864 AT NASHVILLE. THEY WERE SENT BY WAY OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY TO CAMP CHASE, A UNION POW CAMP AT COLUMBUS, OHIO. FELIX WAS TRANSFERRED TO POINT LOOKOUT MARYLAND A UNION POW CAMP AT THE (MOUTH OF POTOMIC RIVER ACROSS FROM VIRGINA)TO BE EXCHANGED FOR UNION POW WHICH DID NOT TAKE PLACE BEFORE BEING RELEASED IN JUNE OF 1865.

Henry Edgar mustered in on May 5, 1862. He was captured at Battle of Lavergne, TN on October 7, 1862 but was paroled on October 9 without any oath to cease fighting (likely a prisoner swap. He fought with the 32nd until it was merged with the 58th on November 23, 1863 (now the 32nd & 58th Regiments. He fought at Chickamauga TN, Columbia TN, Franklin TN, Jackson, and New Hope TN usually in Clayton's Brigade. He fought at Spanish Fort, AL and was one of the few survivors. He was made a Prisoner of War, taken to Ship Island on April 10, 1865 and was then sent to Vickburg on May 1, 1865 where he was paroled and returned home by mid May. He returned to being a rural farmer and lived a long, full life

George enlisted 29 March 1862 at the formation of the Regiment at Coffeeville, Clark Co. Alabama. Mustered at Mobile, Ala. Captured 7 Oct 1862 at Lavergne, Tenn. and paroled 9 Oct. 20 Apr 1863 while stationed at Mobile he was given a 30 day furlough. His unit served under General Nathan Bedford Forrest for some time. Discharged 20 April 1865.

A.J. Pope was in company E, brother Cullen Pope also in company H, brother Calvin Pope was in 15th regiment, Company H.

From Tuscaloosa, AL, originally from County Cork, Ireland, via NY. He fought with the 32nd Alabama at Murfressboro, Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, Lookout Mountain and Franklin and was surrendered at Spanish Fort, AL and parolled. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetary in Tuscaloosa next to Bryant-Denny Stadium and has a UDC marker. He survived the war and went on to be a very successful banker in a 5 county area around Tuscaloosa. His youngest son, Henry Butler Hanly is my grandfather (passed in 1948).
