34th Alabama Infantry

John Frances Jones Kolb is my gguncle. The only information I have is that he served in Capt. Black's Co. 34th Alabama Infantry. He enlisted as a blacksmith at age 19 (he died at age 21). He entered in Apr. 1862. The family lived in Macon County, AL From a letter he wrote to his parents he was either sick or injured and in Tullahoma, TN

I don''t know yet in which Company he served, but he was wounded sometime during the war as he lost vision in left eye.

He is my 2nd Great Grandfather, serving with the 34th Alabama Co. B. He joined when the company was formed in 1862 and was from Coosa County, Alabama. He served alongside my 3rd Great Uncles William, Josiah, Jonathon and Enoch Callaway. Enoch was captured at Missionary Ridge and died at Rock Island POW camp in 1864.

This is my great great grandfather. Just trying to get more info. Any at all about him or the 34th would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on Daniel Jackson Patterson a Private in Company B 34th Infantry.

Singleton Posey joined Company 'B', 34th Infantry - Alabama on May 3, 1862. The 34th Infantry was organized at Loachapoka, Alabama on 15 April, 1862. Singleton was in the battle at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta and at the battle of Franklin, where the 34th escaped the severest part of the fighting, but at Nashville, the remainder of the unit was nearly decimated. With the wreck of the Army, the regiment passed into the Carolinas where it skirmished at Kinston and again at Bentonville. Ultimately consolidated with the 24th & 28th regiments, about 100 of the original 1,000 members of the regiment were surrendered at High Point, North Carolina, 26 April, 1865. Singleton Posey was paroled (as a POW and wounded) in Talledega, Al. on July 8, 1865.

George Washington Prater enlisted as a private in Co. B, 34th Ala. Inf. from Marble Valley (extreme NW Coosa Co.) on 5 May 1862. He was 6' had dark hair, grey eyes and had a fair complexion. He went home on a sick furlough in May 62, was sick in the hospital in June (prob. In Tupelo, Miss.) and was in a hospital at Tyner's Station, Tenn. from Aug-Nov. 1862. He died in Shelbyville, Tenn. on 28 April 1863 (and probably is buried there in an unmarked grave). His brother, Lou Morris Prater was 19 and was captured in Kentucky in Oct. 1862, paroled and was captured again during the battle of Missionary Ridge on 25 Nov. 1863. He spent the rest of the war at Rock Island, Ill. Prison until paroled in May 1865

Jesse was born 19 July 1832 in Henry County Georgia. The 1860 census finds him at age 28 in Rockford, Coosa County. Alabama. He enlists for three years on 20 Jan. 1863 in the next county south at Wetumka, Elmore County Ala. He has 14 items in his archival most of which consists of paper fragments in poor condition relating to pay and clothing issues with two mentions of hospitalizations. These papers do show that he served until the end of the illegal invasion. He died 5 Oct 1905 in Coosa County, Ala. and is buried in the Union Cem. in that county. May the Lord rest his soul.

Andrew Clayton Ferguson died in the war. He was 27 years old. Where and when is unknown. He joined in Coosa Co. Ala. Capt J.M. Willis's Company C. 34th Regt. Ala Infantry. A Report dated 5 April 1864 shows his rank as 5th Sgt. His wife Mary L Ferguson nee Chapman filed for settlement on 8 Feb.1865. Special order 64/2 dated 10 August 1864 places him on the Honor Roll.

Lewis P. Fisher is also listed as LP Fisher. He was from Coosa County,AL. and died during the battle in TN.

Thomas 'Green' Hines lived in Elmore Co.,AL.for many years and later in Autauga County,AL where he died in 1919.

Killed at Murfreesboro Dec 31st, 1862

Enlisted at Talapossa, AL with brothers Samuel J. Moran and John Milton Moran. All were captured at Missionary Ridge and released under an 'exchange.' He and wife Louisa Hughes died at age 47 shortly after returning to Alabama/Mississippi. Possibly of TB (which runs in the family) or Small Pox (a common infection from Rock Island).

Confederate Veteran Samuel J. Moran who entered the Confederate service from Alabama on March 6, 1862. He served in Co. D, 34th Regiment in General Mitchell‘s Brigade. Samuel was captured at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863, and imprisoned at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois. He was released from there June 20, 1865, on Oath.

James Monroe Farrell & his older brother William Thomas Farrell & brother-in-law John W Palmer en-listed together in Tallapoosa County Alabama. John W Palmer died of a gunshot wound while prisoner at Stone River/Murfreesboro TN 1863. Leaving the Farrell brother's younger sister Rebecca a widow at 14!

Enlisted MArch 7, 1862 at Notasulga, AL. Discharged at Quintard Hospital, Rome, GA with chronic rheumatism April 18, 1863. He was 6'2' tall, fair complected, with blue eyes and blonde hair. Occupation was farmer before the war.

James was born In July in Newton Co Georgia. He has 27 items in his archival file. He enlisted either 26 Feb or 20 March 1862 in Tallapoosa, Ala. in Capt. Ashurst's Company, Col Mitchell & Echols' Regiment for 3 years or the war. The 34th being assigned to General Arthur M Manigault's Brigade, General Jones M Wither's Division. The regiment saw slight action in the Kentucky Campaign, Battles of Murfreesboro, Munfordville, Murfreesboro, Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga. In the Alanta Campaign on 28 July 1864, he takes a mini ball thru his right shoulder and loses the use of his right arm. He meets a medical board which finds him disabled and discharges him. He is described as being 5 feet 7 inches, with fair complexion, grey eyes and light hair. He died 12 June 1922 at Alto, Cherokee Co. Texas and is buried in the Hendrick Cem in that county. He was the father-in -law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. Deo Vindice.

William (born 11 April 1820 in N.C. or Ga.)enlisted March 6, 1862. He contracted a disease while with unit in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was sent home to Tallapoosa County, Alabama where he died sometime after Oct 1862 at age 42. He left wife Malinda (Walton) and six sons.

My Grandpa - Looking for info about the service of Co.H and the 34th

Isham Brooks Cadenhead initially joined the 45th Alabama Infantry but transferred to the 34th in May, 1864. He was shot in the chest during the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864 and his body was left with the Union.

John was 29 years old from Russell Co Alabama. He Enlisted in Capt. Bickerstaff's Co., Mitchell & Echols Confederate Vol's. He enlisted on 17 March 1862 for the war. He was mustered in and appointed 2nd Lieut on 21 April 1862. He was promoted to Captain on 14 Feb. 1863. He was seriously wounded at the battle of Atlanta. Having recovered enough to rejoin his unit, he served until the end. His wife received a pension based on his service to the Confederacy. Deo Vindice
