Enl 8 May 1862 at Princeton, AR. Age 34. Captured 4 Jul 1863 at Helena, AR  & sent to MP Alton, IL 9 Jul 1863. then to Johnson's Island, OH 6 Aug 1863. Age 35. Born AL.

Died of disease at Vicksburg July 1863. Buried in unmarked, probably mass grave in Vicksburg. Father of two daughters that married Joe D. & Ben A. Forrester. They were all in the 37th.

Survivor of Vicksburg seige. Paroled by General U.S. Grant July 1863. Also served with Company "C". Settled in Greenwood Arkansas post war.

Thomas E.W. Callen was born in Dallas County, Alabama in 1842 and died in Barbour County, Alabama in 1920.

Age at enlistment 20 years old. Was a POW at Holly Springs, MS. and sent to Cairo,(Ms?)for exchange on 22 Dec 1862. Died in service at unknown place/date, appears to have died of pneumonia while Pow in Union hands- source suggest he died at/near Memphis, Tn. Brother to Thomas Jefferson Dawsey.

Paroled at Vicksburg MS. on 9 July 1863. WIA at Lookout Mt. TN. on 24 Nov.1863(shot in arm). Sent to hospital and later sent home to recuperate where he apparently deserted and joined the Union Army. According to on statement made to Houston Co. AL.in 1907, he enlisted in 1863 at Vernon FL. in the 14th New York Cavalry, Co.H, U.S.A. where he: 'continued until 1 1/2 years and then transferred to Co. E, New York Cavalry and stayed until close of war.'

Brother to Joseph Duncan Forrester. He served in 37th until end of War. Served 7 months in the 7th Georgia Infantry State Troups prior to joining the 37th Alabama Regiment.

He was my GrearGrandfather. Came home after Vicksburg and enlisted in the 5th Battalion Flordia Cavalry Company E.

Emanuel Antley was his Father-in-law. John married a daughter named Mary(Polly Ann) Antley. John was killed 14 November 1862 at Oxford, Mississippi and is buried there.

Enlistment Info:Daviston, Corporal, Military Engagement Info:Served until wounded at Atlanta. Battles: Fought on 25 Nov 1863 at Missionary Ridge, TN. Fought on 18 Jun 1864 at Kenesaw Mountain, GA. Regiment History: THE THIRTY-SEVENTH ALABAMA INFANTRY. The Thirty-seventh was organized at Auburn in the spring of 1862; sent to Columbus, Miss., from there to Tupelo. With Price at Iuka, September 19-20, 1862, it began its long roll of battles, and was highly commended by Brigadier-General Martin and by General Price. Both its colonel, J. F. Dowdell, and its lieutenant-colonel, A. A. Greene, were wounded in this fight, besides forty-three of the men. The regiment went into battle with 304 men, so that its loss was heavy. General Little, in whose division it was, was killed at Iuka. In the battle of Corinth, October 3-5, 1862, it lost heavily and its brigade commander, General Martin, was killed. Brigaded under General Moore, the winter of 1862-63 was spent in Mississippi. It took part at Chickasaw Bayou, was sent to Sunflower river, but returned before the close of the spring; was in the battles of Port Gibson, May 1, 1863, and Baker's Creek, May 16th, where it lost heavily.From that time till July 4th it formed part of the garrison at Vicksburg, and was captured with that place, where it had suffered greatly from losses and privations. For awhile, after being exchanged, the regiment was in parole camp at Demopolis. Later it was transferred to the army of Tennessee, and took part in the battles of Lookout Mountain, November 24th; Missionary Ridge, November 25th. After wintering at Dalton, brigaded under Gen. Alpheus Baker, the regiment was ever in the van of the army in the battles of the Georgia campaign, at Rocky Face mountain, May 9th and 10th; Resaca, May 14th and 15th; and New Hope church, May 25th, where it lost heavily, officers and men. In the battles around Atlanta its casualties were great. The regiment was sent for in the winter to do garrison duty at Spanish Fort, but early in the spring it was returned to the army of Tennessee, and again was in battle at Bentonville. Consolidated with the Forty-second and Fifty-fourth Alabama, commanded by Col. John A. Winter, it surrendered in North Carolina. This regiment was remarkable for the large number of its officers killed and wounded. Capt. Marion C. J. Searcy was wounded at Corinth and killed at Missionary Ridge. Capt. W. W. Meadows was killed, and Capts. Moses B. Greene, John 0. Davis and S. M. Robertson were wounded, at Corinth; Capt. J. C. Kendrick was wounded at Corinth and at Atlanta; Capt. J. J. Padgett was wounded; Capt. Joel G. Greene, at Atlanta; Capt. C. Pennington, at Resaca; Capt. J. M. Leach was killed at New Hope: Capt. C. E. Evans was wounded at Resaca and Atlanta; Capt. James H. Johnson wounded at Atlanta. Its field officers were Col. James F. Dowdell, captured at Vicksburg; Lieut.-Col. A. A. Greene, wounded at Iuka and at Missionary Ridge, and killed at Atlanta; Lieut.Col. James was born 21 1832 at China Grove, Pike Co. Ala. He enlisted 22 March 1862. The 1860 census finds him at age 30 in China Grove, Pike Co. The 37th Regt was organized at Auburn, Ala in the Spring of 1862. He has 6 cards in his archival file. He fought at Luka, Corinth Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson, and Champion Hill aka Baker's Creek before the fall of Vicksburg on 4 July 1863 and was paroled. He rejoined his Regiment serving under Brigade commanders, J.C. Moore, A. Baker, Gibson's & finally Brantley's Brigade. Battles: Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign, Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw Mountain. The regiment surrendered at Greensboro, NC 75 men and officers. James was the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed. He died before 1880, and his grave is unknown.

John Was about 19 years old when he enlisted 9 April 1862 in Capt Slayton's Company. 37th Regt. Alabama Infantry. Mustered in on 30 June 1862 at Auburn, Lee Co. Ala. for 3 years or the war. Captured at Vicksburg and paroled. Paroled at Greensboro N. C. on 1 May 1865. 1100 men took the field and only 300 hundred were present when the unit flags were furled. Deo Vindice Battles: Iuka, Corinth, Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg [ where he was captured and paroled. Lookout Moountain , Chattanooga, Resaca, Noonday Creek, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Bentonville NC.

John, was the first husband of my 3rd cousin 4 times removed. They Divorced after a few years and he remarried. He has 4 cards in his archival file, 3 of which are clothing issue. I do know he survived the war. His cover CMR is all I have of his service.

Age at Enlistment: 36 Enlisted 29 March 1862 at Woodville AL, along with William and Talbot. No other information is known at this time about his service, although he survived. From all research, it may be possible that he was among 75 men out of 2,000 in the regiment that fought and survived the 37th's entire Civil War campaign. Further research is needed to validate this claim.

Age at Enlistment: 31 Enlisted 29 March 1862 at Woodville AL; Signed his parole at Vicksburg MS on 9 July 1863 with X, most likely rejoined the 37th when the regiment was recalled. Believed to have fought in many battles, including Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, and Atlanta. After Atlanta, the 37th was sent to Spanish Fort from August to December 1864. Hospitalized in Ross Hospital at Mobile AL, Oct 17-24 1864 with Febris Intermittens, Tert. (malaria). Unsure if he survived.

If he did, he may have fought at Lookout Mountain, and Atlanta. No other information is known at this time about his service.

John Gilchrist Purcell was born in 1835 in Robeson County, North Carolina and died there in 1863 after contracting typhoid fever in the waning days of the siege of Vicksburg. It is thought that he served as commanding officer for Company E during the illness of its captain.

Was wounded in arm and captured. North told him to sign paper vowing his allegiance to North. He signed and intended to get a horse and return to his Alabama regiment. The war ended before he could get the horse, so he is shown as being in both Confederate and Union armies. His last name is written as DORRIS on medical part of enlistment paper and as DAVIS on register paper

My Grandpa - Enlisted in the 37th after serving one year in the 1st Alabama infantry from Pike county. Wounded and captured during Iuka/Corinth campaign. Exchanged and sent by river transport down to Vicksburg and later died from his wounds somewhere around Jackson - Nov.62. (Stephenson)

He was taken prisoner at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

James Daniel Moss, Private, Co G, 37th Al Inf Regt, enlisted 4/18/1862 at Auburn, Lee Co Al. On another document his enlistment was given as 5/25/61. His Col was James F Dowdell, his Cpt.s were Warner W Meadows, Sledge M. Robertson, and C. E. Evans. He was captured at the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tenn, in 1863, and imprisoned at Rock Island, Ill. shortly thereafter. Family history relates that at war's end he was released, caught a train into Tenn or Ky then, had to walk or hitch a ride the rest of the way home.
