E. S. Gulley b. 1831 Wayne Co., N.C., Civil War; 19th Reg, Ala Inf; 40th Reg, Ala Inf. // 40th Regiment, Alabama Infantry 40th Infantry Regiment, organized at Mobile, Alabama, in May, 1862, recruited its companies in Perry, Sumter, Morgan, Covington, Pickens, Colbert, Mobile, and Choctaw counties. It served at Mobile until December, then moved to Mississippi where under the command of J.C. Moore it was active in the operations on Deer Creek. Later four companies were transferred to General Extor's Brigade, which fought at Chickamauga. The other companies were part of the garrison at Vicksburg and were captured when that city fell. After being exchanged, the regiment was united and sustained 135 casualties at Chattanooga. Attached to A.Baker's, Gibson's, and Brantley's Brigade, it participated in the Atlanta Campaign, moved to Mobile, then returned to the Army of Tennessee in North Carolina. This unit had 332 fit for duty in January, 1863, and totalled 429 men and 338 arms in December. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 7-31, it lost twenty percent of the 416 engaged. Only a handful surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Augustus A. Coleman and John H. Higley, Lieutenant Colonels E.S. Gulley and Thomas O. Stone, and Major Elbert D. Willett.

This is my gg grandfather (1833-1873). His father was Darling S. Massey (1806-1836). WEM's wife was his 1st cousin Martha Jarome Massey. One of William E. Massey's son's was James Moore Massey (my g grandfather). One of JMM's daughters was Martha Isobel Massey (my grandmother). WEM is buried in Perry Co.,AL in a Massey family cemetery with a CSA grave stone with 8th Ala Inf. and Chaplin marked on it. He lived at Radfordville, AL when he enlisted. He originally enlisted in 40th Reg. Ala. Vol. (Col. Colman) 10/16/1862 (by W.B. Livingston) and discharged from it 11/28/1862. He enlisted in the 8th Inf 2/16/1863 in Marion,AL as a PVT. Appt. Chaplin 11/10/1863. (In 1860 he was studying for the ministry at Howard College, Marion, AL). Was at Chancellorsville 5/3/1863. Absent sick, Gettysburg, July 2-3,1863 and Bristow Station, Oct.14, 1863. He survived the war but was murdered by a Dr. Moses H. Daniel in Perry County, AL.

Thomas M. Calley of Pickens Co., Alabama (1829 - 1902) served with the 40th Alabama from Nov 5, 1861 to Aug 3, 1864 when he was captured at the defenses of Atlanta. He served out the rest of the war at Camp Chase POW camp in Ohio. He is my gggrandfather.

Abram Dallas Jones enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 17 or 18yrs old. There is a receipt for clothing on June 8th 1864. On June 16 1864, He was wounded at Dog Creek at the foot of Kennesaw Mountain. He was shot in the arm and was carried off the field and his arm was amputated. His first wife, Mary Simms, died when his youngest child was only a couple years old. A few years later, in 1888, he married Martha Elmore. She was supposedly a good step-mother to his children. He had no children with Martha before she died. He later married Ella Edgeworth and had 2 children before he died in August 18, 1918 in Tuscalooa, AL. He is buried in Pate Cemetery in Coker, Tuscaloosa County, AL.

I mostly know he fought in the battle of Atlanta

Ruben was about 31 years old. His records are scattered. His headstone at Marvin Chapel, UMC Church Carrolleton, Pickins Co. Ala. is primary source. It is believed he joined when the unit was formed at Mobile, Ala. May of 1862. He fought at Vicksburg, Deer Run, Chicamauga, Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta Campaign, New Hope and into the Carolina's . Last stand at Bentonville, NC Surrendered at Yatkin River Bridge. He survived the invasion and died in 1904.

Benjamin F. Mullins enlisted as a private with Co. B, "Pickens Planters", 40th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Confederate States of America in 1862 His unit fought at the Battle of Vicksburg, when on the 17th of June, 1863, he was KIA. The following is an excerpt from "History of Co. B, 40th Alabama Regiment, CSA, 1862-1865, by Captain Elber D. Willet, regimental commanding officer. "Wednesday, June 17th, firing as usual. At 7:30 am, a conical shell entered the trench and exploded. One piece struck B.F. Mullinsin in the head. He was badly wounded, taken to hospital No. 3, operated on, and soon after died. He left a wife and child. He was good soldier."

1stLt James Wilkins (Wilkes) Monette (1833-1870), son of William Fletcher Monette (Major, 36th Infantry, Seminole War) and wife Elizabeth Sims, was raised near Sawyerville, Greene County, AL (now Hale County). He graduated University of Alabama and held the Chair of Mathematics there until 1859. Married Mary Seay, sister of later Alabama Governor Thomas Seay. Joined 40th Alabama CSA and commanded Company C at its capture at Vicksburg and until end of the war. Severely wounded at Battle of Bentonville, NC, which hastened his death five years later. Father of Dr. Reuben Fletcher Monette (1870-1917)the noted physician of Greensboro, AL.

William David Jackson Thrash was born 1831 in Alabama. He married Elizabeth Green August 18, 1847 in Clarke County, Ala . He was killed in the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina fought March 19-21, 1865 and like most all, he was buried on the battlefield. Elizabeth never remarried and her and the children moved to Newton County, Ms from Sumter County, Ala. about 1879.

Capt. Campbell was captured at Bentonville, NC on March 19, 1865 and was sent to prison in Washington DC until June 1865.

John Carney joined the 40th Alabama on 18 Oct 1863, was wounded at Lookout Mtn, TN on 24 Nov 1863. Information from the National Archives, Washington DC

W.A. Morrison was from Pike County near Troy. He was my Great-grand father. He married tree times Martha Fowler, Sallie Sarah Elizabeth Stephens and Cynthia Meyers. He was son of John Daniel Morrison. His second wife's father also served his name was Samuel Stephens. I also had my great great grandfather John Huston Walker served the Union. He was from Centreville Cumberland County PA. His likeness is on a monument on the field at Gettysburg I know he was there but I like to confirm if W.A. was there. I'm told he was.

Captured and paroled at Vicksburg MS,recaptured at Lookout Mtn TN and taken in arms for Rock Island ILL.

Mustered into the CSA army at age 28 in Company D, 40th Alabama Infantry under Captain A G Campbell. He was enlisted by Col A A Coleman on March 22, 1862 in Choctaw County Alabama for the period of the war.

1828-1864 Died during the Atlanta Campaign.

William was born in Lancaster Co. SC Aug 1834. He enlisted at Spanish Fort, Mobile, Ala. 10 May 1862 in Bakers Brigade, Army of Mobile. Elected as 2nd Lieut. Promoted to 1st Lieut. 28 Oct 1862. He sees his first combat at Vicksburg at Deer Run. then Mission Ridge, Chicamauga, Lookout Mountain, and the Atlanta Campaign. Captured at Big Shanty and sent to Lousiville, Ky as POW then on to Johnson Island, at Sanduskey, Ohio. He was released after swallowing the yellow dog on 15 Jun 1865. He was assigned to Baker's Brigade, Clayton's Division, Lee's Corps, commanded by Brig. Gen. Alphen's Baker. He married my cousin Martha Ann Thomas on 18 Jan 1861. They are buried at Herbert Cem. Evergreen, Conecuh Co. Ala.

Michael was a conscript from Sumter Co Ala. On 22 July 1863 he was given a surgeons certificate that exempted him from field duty. He was assigned to the Commasarry Dept. He was of frail frame and was plagued with medical problems. 19 Sept 1864 he is a patient in hosp. at Ocmulgee, Macon , Georgia with Chronic Diarrhoea while assigned to Stewart's Artillery. His unit is paroled at Gainsville, Ala on 13 May 1865. We are related by marriage.

Alexander was 17 years old when he enlisted 22 Sept 1863 in Kemper Co. Miss. by Lt Col. A. A. Pennington. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg. Captured again at Lookout Mountain while on Picket duty. Sent to the POW prison at Louisville, Ky. then to Rock Island Illinois arriving 1 Dec 1863. He was released 20 Mar 1865. He is related by marriage. Stepson of my 1st cousin 6 x removed.

William was 23 year old when he enlisted at Mobile Ala. on 10 May 1862. Captured at Vicksburg on the 4 of July and paroled on the 9th. Rejoining the fight he was again captured at the battle of Big Shanty, Georgia on 15 June 1864. He is sent to the POW prison in Louisville, Ky. and on to Rock Island, Illinois. He swallowed the ' Yellow Dog' and was released 21 Junr 1865. He lived to the age of 93 dying 30 Mar 1935. He was my 2nd cousin 5 x removed.
