42nd Alabama Infantry

William Walker Cameron lived 15 miles north of Gunther's Landing in Marshall County Alabama. He joined when he was about 15 or 16. Later the 42nd was consolidated into the 55th Alabama. In the fall of 1863 he was captured and carried to Nashville by the Union Cavalry. He joined the 12th Tennessee Cavalry USA with the understanding that he would only guard wagons and later be sent to fight indians. He saw some action at Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville. He was injured Dec. 16th outside Nashville. He served in Leavenworth, Kansas from April to May 1865. He moved to Leighton, AL and married. He is buried in Old Bethel Cemetery. His descendents are strong Confederates to this day at LaGrange on Lawrence Mountain.

Alexander Gilbert was born abt 1830 in Georgia, later moving to Sanford Co. AL. He enlisted 10 May, 1862 in Marion Co. AL. He is found in a mustard roll 16 May 1862 in Columbus MS. Alexander was wounded during fighting in and around Corinth MS. He died in City Hospital, Vickburg, Warren Co. MS on 23 October 1862. He is buried in City Cemetery (Cedar Hill Cem.) Vicksburg, Warren Co. MS. Alexander's widow, Nancy Margaret filed for a widow's pension. At the time of his death, Alexander was the father/stepfather of seven children. Records also report Alexander served in Company F.

my great-great grandfather was the commander of Company I (Alabama Grays) and was wounded at Chickamauga and again near Lovejoy Station. He previously served in Company D, 2nd Alabama and Company A, 42nd Alabama. His younger brother Robert served the Shorter Guards (90 Day Volunteers) and Company D, 3rd Alabama Cavalry. Charles is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Oakton, Kentucky.

This is located on a hill behind a farmhouse and is completely grown over. It is very difficult to get to and is easily missed. There are four marked graves and 17 field stones. These are the children and grandchildren of Joshua Roberts. They include three sets of twins. This cemetery is behind the Old Roberts house site and approximately 100' from an old road originally the road from Winfield to Jasper. Information on this was supplied by Mr. A.C. Carter. Location of Old Roberts Cem.: Travel East from Winfield on U.S. 78. Turn South (Right) on Hwy 129 going 1.4 miles to Glen Allen. Continue 1.6 miles on Hwy 233. The Cemetery is located south of the highway on top of hill behind R.J. Carter's house. He was in Co. A, 42nd Alabama Infantry. They fought in the following campaigns and battles. Gabriel was born 15 Sep 1838 in Wilcox Co. Alabama. He was a devout Presbyterian. He enlisted at Camden, Alabama on 11 April 1862 in Co C 42nd Regiment Alabama Infantry. 24 Dec 1963 he is a patient in French's Hospital at Shelby Springs, Alabama. 3 July 1863 he is captured at Vicksburg. Paroled June 1865 at Selma, Alabama He died 8 May 1909 after falling into the river while checking his trot lines. He is buried at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church at Cotton Plant, Tippah County, Mississippi. We are distantly related.

John was 20 years old when he enlisted 3 Mar 1862 at Andalusa,Covington Co. Ala. for 3 years or the war i n Capt. Brady's Co Ala. Vols. it is 73 miles to rendezvous. He is captured and paroled at Vicksburg 4 July 1863. Captured again at end of the war at Macon, Ga. in April 1865. He is sick and is in the Ocmelgee, Hospital at Macon. Documentation in 2nd quarter of 1864 lists his rank as Sergeant. He fought at Corinth, Vicksburg, Lookout & Mission Ridge, Tenn. Resaca, Ga., New Hope, and finally at Bentonville, NC. He died 4 Jan 1890 in Proctor, Comanche Co. Texas. We are related by a very distant marriage.

Private Elias 'Green' Mancill was wounded at the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Paroled at Demopolis, AL and honorably discharged in 1864 (due to his wound). Green was born in Covington County, AL in 1836 and died 1901. Pension Application filed by Nancy Jane Mancil, widow. Nancy died in 1937. Looking for any information on John J. This is as far back as we can go in genealogy. We don't have much information for that era.

H. Littleton Sandlin was born abt 1829 in South Carolina, later settling in Marion Co. AL. He enlisted in May 1862 in Marion Co. AL. He was wounded/captured during the Battle of Corinth Mississippi, 3-5 Oct, 1862 and died in City Hospital, Vicksburg, Warren Co. MS on Nov 20, 1862. Records indicate that he was held for a time as a prisoner of war. He is buried in City Cemetery (Cedar Hill Cem.), grave #346 in Vicksburg, Warren Co. MS. At the time of his death Littleton was the father of at least eight children. His widow, Sarah Childers Sandlin applied for a widow's pension in May 1897. His headstone indicates he served in Co. E. All the documents in my possession show he was a member of Co. F.

Payton G. Brewer was my Great Great Grandfather He is buried in Edom, Texas.

Pvt. Peyton G. Brewer was born Feb. 23, 1831 in Fayette County, Ala. Married Keziah A. Tapley Nov. 6, 1851 in Columbus, Miss. Died May 2, 1910 in Edom, Texas. He enlisted in the 42nd Alabama Infantry Regiment May 10, 1862 in Marion County, Ala. and served at the Battle of Vicksburg. Received a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas in 1899 (Application No. 4158).

He was a very distant grandfather of mine I'm taking over my great grandmothers genealogy and trying to find more information about him Thomas J. Gann was born January 9/16th of 1839 in Marion Co. Alabama First entered the service as Private May 13th 1862 in the 42nd Alabama regiment in company F. He later reenlisted after discharge as a private in the fall of 1862 in Company K and continued until discharge in 1864 Al. Co.K. 5 Ala. Cav He married Leminda Catherine(Katy) Earnest in 1861 Their children: William Allen Gann, Rebecca Ann Gann, Andrew Smith(Buck) Gann, C.A. Gann?, Minnie Gann, Babe Gann, Dolly Josephine Gann, and James(Jim) Gann

William L. Chandler first entered the Confederate Army as a private on May 2, 1861 at New Orleans, Louisiana in the Caldwell Guards, 3rd Louisiana Regiment. he served until July 4, 1861 and was discharged at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He reenlisted as a Private on May, 1862 at Talladega, Alabama and served until the close of the war. He was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina in May, 1865. He was a teamster and drove an Ambulance Wagon. He was also shown to have been in company Y of the 42nd Alabama.

The only information from Confederate records that I have is the first page of the service record for A. D. Pierce as a Private in the 42nd Alabama Infantry Aretus is listed in the 1850 Census for Coweta County, Georgia as a 6 year old boy, so born about 1844. His family was from the Newnan, Georgia area. In 1860, Aretus moved with his family to St. Clair County, Alabama. They lived in present day Odenville, Alabama. In the 1860 Census, Aretus is listed as 16 years of age. I have no further information about him and he never returned home after the war.

I believe Wyatt was in the 42nd AL Infantry Regiment, from North Alabama. I am trying to determine if his father was Abner Singleton.

John was 25 years old when he joined Co I 42nd Ala Infantry Regiment when it was formed 12 May 1862 at Columbus Miss. He fought at Corinth on the 3,4, & 5th Oct. in Moore's Brigade, Maurey's Division. From late Oct. 1862 until mid May 1863 he is involved in hot skirmishes along the Miss. Central RR. from Bolivia. Tenn to Coffeeville, Miss. during [ Grants Central Miss Campaign]. Fought at 40 Hills skirmish and Hankinson's Ferry Miss. He was wounded by minnie ball to left ankle. He found the lead in his shoe. Disabled he was reassigned to the CSA Navy at Mobile Ala until the end of the war. He was my 6th cousin 3 x removed.. PS: That wound hounded him the remainder of his days. He finally had the leg amputated to get relief.

R.A. McDonald (my GG Grandfather) was in company K in Alabama's 42nd infantry and died from wounds recieved in the battle of Vicksburg in june/july 23rd 1863. He is buried at Vicksburg Cemetary! I'm looking for a photo of his unit? or a photo of him and/or his company?
