Abner D. Zachry and his brother James S. Zachry joined the 53rd Alabama Parsiten Rangers Co A from Macon County in 1862. They served through the Invasion in many battles . James Remained in Alabama and is buried in Notasuluga. Ab moved to Texas with some of his family and his wife's family . He died there Dec. 17,1891 and is buried near Henrietta. There were over twenty Confederates who were the sons and grandsons of Jesse Edwin Zachry,Ab's Father. There were at least that many more among Amelia Nunn's,Ab's wife, brothers and nephewes. How could we have lost?

This unit should be titled 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers / Cavalry. Organized at Montgomery Ala. in Nov. 1862. Stanford was born in Halifax, Virginia 17 July 1824. The 1860 census finds him at age 34 in Coosa Co. Ala. The Post Office is at Mount Olive. He has 13 items in his archival file. Enlisted 19 Nov 1862 at Montgomery by Capt. M.W. Hannon for the war. He joins Captain Humphries Company. On 12 Nov 1863 he is promoted to 5th Sgt. He is paroled at Montgomery Ala, 19 May 1865. He is described as 5 fool 11 inches. with dark hair and dark eyes. with faire complexion. Officers were Col. Mosew W Hannon, Lt. Col. John F Gaines, Major Thomas F Jenkins. Rode with Armstrongs Brigade, Jacksons Division, Van Dorn's Cavalry Corps. & Moses W. Hannon's Brigade, Hume's Division, Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, Army of Tenn. Battles: Cherokee Station and Little Bear Creek Alabama 12 Dec 1862. Thompsons Station 5 Mar 1863, Florence Ala. 25 March 1863, Brentwood, 25 Mar 1863, Town Creek Apr 1863, Streight's Raid April-May 1863, Chickamauga 19 - 20 Sept 1863, Atlanta Campaign May - Sept 1864, Jonesboro, 31 Aug - 1 Sept 1864, Carolina Campaign, Feb - Apr 1865. Stanford died 3 Dec 1893 in Hissop, Coosa Co. Ala. and buried in the Chapman Cem. in that county. He married into my Chapman line.

M.M. 'Pete' Murphy survived the war and is buried in Fellowship Baptist cemetary in Capps, Alabama near Newville in Henry County.

Stephen was my great-great grandfather. He enlisted August 22, 1862 in Dale County, AL. Union Prisoner of War records show that he was captured July 28, 1864 at Smith’s Ferry, GA, imprisoned at Nashville, TN, Military Prison, Louisville, KY and Camp Chase, OH where he died December 22, 1864 of pneumonia – grave 645. His last letter home to wife Martha reads,'Camp Chase Ohio Nov 4 1864 Dear companion and children. I now seat my self to drop you a few lines wich leaves me up but not well I have a very bad could yore kind letter of the 23 of Sept came to hand on the first inst wich give me grate pleasure to hear from you all one time more but was very sorry to hear of the deth of brother Josiah I truly hope this may reach you all in dew time and find you all in the enjoyment of good helth and doing well I was proud to hear that you had made a good crop you must all rite to me as often as you can direct yore letter Just as you did the other give my love to all. yore affectionate husband

Buried at Plesaent Hill Cem. west of Ozark,AL. This cemetery was moved from The Ft. Rucker Reservation during WWII. His wife was Martha Edwards.

The Al 53rd was a calvary unit not infantry as listed. Allen b. 4/17/1828 d. 8/7/1910 entered service Sept 1862 with his nephew Ivy N Hutto. He was from Coffee Co Al and later moved to Talladega Co Al. He married Sarah Ann Bennett 10/14/1850 and after her death married Margaret Teasley and fathered numerous children with each. He later moved to Rule, Texas where he died.

The 53rd was a calvary unit not infantry as listed. Ivy Nicholas Hutto b. 1/31/1842 d. 9/25/1898 from Coffee Co, Al entered Sept 1862 along with his uncle Allen Hutto. Ivy survived the war, moved to Talladega Co. where he died. He married Nancy Ann Austin and had 10 children and after her death married Sarah Frances Stewart and fathered 6 more children. He was my gr gr gr grandfather.

Joseph entered service Dec 23, 1863. He was from Coffee Co, Al. He was captured at the Battle of Resaca in Ga. POW at Camp Morton Indianapolis IN died Aug 7 1864 while in captivity from measles(?). Buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis,IN. Joseph was barely 20 years old.

David James Wilson, son of Bradberry and Charlotte Wilson,of Lowndes County, Alabama signed up for the Civil War at Greenville, Alabama. He served as a blacksmith for the 53rd Ala Partisan Rangers, Co. I. At the end of the war he was stationed at a hospital in Courtland, Ala. In 1870 he moved his wife, Bethany Morgan Wilson, and children to Grant County Arkansas. C. C. Morgan signed up at Greenville also. Was that Bethany's brother by chance? D. J. was killed in December 1873 on the way back from selling cotton in Pine Bluff to his rural home in southern Grant County. Bethany's children: Henry and Jeff stayed in Grant County. Lavonia Wilson Hance moved with her husband to Coolidge, Texas about 1914 and Bethany went with them and died in Texas. We have D. J.'s powder horn made from a cow horn and it has A. D. J. Wils scratched into it plus: 1Y 1Y Does that mean he got one Yankee, one Yankee? His grandson, my grandfather, gave it to me in the 1970's. Lots of Alabama cousins remain: Bates Turkey Restaurant and Farm are descended from D. J.'s sister Charity Wilson Wood. The oldest son of D. J. and Bethany, Brad, stayed in Alabama. The late Ham Wilson of Montgomery, once executive secretary of the Ala. Cattlemen's Association was his grandson. Also, cousins are in Alabama descended from D. J.'s brother, Frank, who never returned home from the Civil War.

James Bussey Boyd enlisted in Montgomery Alabama October 28, 1862 and died January 31, 1863 in camp in Tennessee as a result of pneumoia. He was a member of Gen. Moses Hannnon's Brigade

Enlisted Sep 1862. Discharged 1 April 1865. The 53rd was a mounted infantry unit.He left for the war on one of the family mules but returned riding on the top of a freight train.....
