59th Alabama Infantry

JJ Hawkins Daniel was my great grandfather. Records I have found to date show him as missing near Petersburg, or captured and sent to Point Lookout. He also served with his cousin, Zacharis Daniel who was Captain of Company H and was killed in action at Watkins House, March 25th 1965. If anyone has further information on either it would be appreciated.

One of less than 10 of his company to surrender at Appomattox .

Joined Hilliard's Legions, AL, Co. C. 2nd Bn, May 1862, incorporated into Co. A. 59th AL INF, 1863. Captured, Petersburg, VA. June 17, 1864. Paroled Elmira, NY, June 19, 1865. Buried, Smyrna Church Cemetery, Coosa Co. AL.

He was wounded at Chickamauga captured at Farmville, 4-6-1865

Enlisted June 1862 into 'CO A' Second Batt. Hilliard's Legion at Montgomery,Ala. The Legion was divided into the 59th & 60th Ala. Regiments & the 23rd Battalion at Charleston, SC on November 25th, 1863. Alfred also did extra duty as a Teamster at Petersburg in late 1864.

Captured in the battle of Saylor's Creek and tranfered to New Port News prisoner of war camp. Signed the Oath of Allegiance after the war and released to go home.

This was my great-great grandfather. According to my great uncle he was wounded in the war and lost a leg. The man who shot him returned after the war to visit him. He is buried in Coosa County, Alabama. I'm looking for pictures of this unit if there are any available.

Lewis L Shaw * 1st Sgt Co C 59 Reg't Alabama Infantry, enlisted Mar 26 1862, at Rockford Alabama, by Capt Stubblefield, for 3 years, L L Shaw, Sgt Co C 59 Regt Ala, report of sick and wounded in General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, VA. Died Sept 13, 1864 and buried in Richmond Virginia. Sgt. Lewis L. Shaw, 59th AL, Company c, who died 9-13-1864 is at rest at Oakwood Confederate Cemetery - Richmond Virginia. He is in Section G, Row G, grave 095. This is my gggg grandfather

William was 23 in 1860 a book Keeper. He was from Barber Co. Ala. His date of enlistment is not clear. He was elected 2nd Lieut. on 14 Sept 1862 and to 1st Lieut. 30 April 1864. On a Company requisition for uniform items dated 31 Oct 1864 his rank is that of Captain. He survived several episodes of disease. He served in Gracie's Brigade, Johnson's Division - Anderson's Corps. He was engaged in numerous major battles from 25 June 1862 until the surrender at Appomattox. He was just married when he went to fight the invaders. He died in 1924 in Jacksonville, Cherokee Co. Texas.

It's on his grave site and in ancestry i found his name on the roll

This was my g-g-grandfather.

David F.L. Kerr was one of my GG grandfathers on my mothers side of the line. he was born jan.30, 1828. his age at enlistment is given as 34 years. he served as 2 Lt. of Co. A of the 2nd battalion of Hilliards Legion until it was disbanded and reorganized as the 59th and 60th alabama regiments. he then served as the 2nd Lt. of company F of the 59th regiment. He was reported killed in action at the battle of Drewry's Bluff on May 16th, 1864. he is buried somewhere in the Drewry's Bluff area, probably in one of the unmarked mass graves.

Died as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout Maryland on August 8, 1864.

William was born 8 May 1833 in Lowndes Co. Ala. and died 30 June 1912 in Petrey, Crenshaw Co. Ala. He was 29 years old when he enlisted at Greenville, Ala. in Aug. 1862 in Co D 4th Battalion Ala. Artillery, Love's Co. Hillard's Legion. He has seven cards in this unit. Upon reorganization at Knoxville this became Co H 59th Alabama Infantry. He was captured at Hatcher's Run near Petersburg, Va. on 25 Mar 1865 and sent to City Point, Va. arriving 27 March 1865. He was released after [ Swallowing the Yellow Dog] on 26 June 1865. His place of residence is PikeCo. Ala. He has grey eyes, grey hair, Dark Complexion and is 5 ft 8 inches in height. His Regiments Flag was captured at Hatcher's Run. He is buried at Petrey Cem. Petrey, Crenshaw Co. Alabama. He is the Father in Law of my 3rd cousin 5 x removed. Bloods very thin but still kin....Deo Vincice

Lafayette has 13 cards in his archival file. He was 29 years old when he enlisted at Greenville, Alabama. He was wounded and sent to the hospital. On 17 Nov. 1863 He is Furloughed for 60 days to Lounds County Ala., from the 2nd Division Hospital at Howard's Grove, Richmond Virginia. He is paroled on 24 May 1865 at Montgomery Ala. after swallowing the Yellow Dog. He is described as 5 foot 5 inches tall, Red hair, Grey eyes and fair complexion. He died 25 June 1898 at Helicon, Crenshaw county Alabama

Richard Fuller Manly, 2/11/1845- 8/15/1919 youngest son of Basil Manly, 2nd president of University of Alabama and Chaplain of the Confederacy. Enlisted 5/1/1862. Fought at Beans Station, Knoxville, Chickamauga, Drewry's Bluff, Petersburg. Captured Hatcher's Run, 3/15/1865 sent to Fort Delaware, released 6/19/1865 after taking Oath of Allegiance. Returned to Tuscaloosa, moved to Mobile and finally to Birmingham in late 1880s. Formed R F Manly & Co, insurance and real estate company still operating under his great great grandchildren's leadership in 2022 as AutoTec.

My Great Great Grandfather served as color bearer at the age of 16 with the 59th Alabama Infantry Unit Co. K formed near or in Coosa County Alabama. At the battle of Gettysburg a bullet grazed his scalp. According to a great aunt who wrote about her father four colored troops were killed right beside him but never did the flag go down. He was taken prisoner aobut midway through the war and released at the wars end. After the war he left Alabama and resided in Camden, Arkansas where he married and had 10 children. Meek Tarpley Bird was one of his sons . (My gg grandfather) His daughter Mary Alice Bird married Jack Stewart Smith in Camden , Arkansas . Had My father Robert Bird Smith. As I am Jr. and I have two sons. Richard Bird Smith (6) and Jacob Bird Smith (7 months) I have many old pictures from Arkansas and including John Wesley Bird and all of his children and some grandchildren. Francis was 39 years old when he enlisted at Coosa, Alabama on 18 Jan 1864. He died 16 Jan 1864 near Danridge, Tenn. His brother in law wrote a letter to his wife detailing his death. It was a skirmish with the enemy and he was shot thru the bowles and died several hours later. He was the only casualty that day. He is the Father in Law of my 3 cousin 4 x removed.
