This is my ggg grandfather William Asberry Fondren. - - - At age 59 he served in the Alabama Home Guard 1st Class Militia in Bibb County, AL. per Alabama Civil War Service Database - - - http://archives.state.al.us/civilwar/soldier.cfm?id=63555 - - - b. GA and d. TX --- Thought to be son of John W. Fondren (abt 1780 - 1806) and Sally Sarah Unknown but this link unproven.

Jeptha was born in 1812 and was 52 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Capt S. H. Dailey's Co. 1st Class Milita [Home Guard] Monroe County Alabama, Beats 5, 11 & 12. He enlisted 16 Sept 1864 along with four family members. It was late in the war and few had guns. Of the 100+ men only 13 had guns. Of the 5 Middleton's three had a weapon. Some of these home guard soldiers joined the Alabama Reserve units and fought in the last desperate days of fighting at Spanish Fort, Blakely and Mobile. May God rest their souls. I am distantly related to Jeptha by marriage.

James Was born 9 March 1848 at Travelers Rest, Coosa Co. Alabama. There is scant information on his unit. He is found in the 1860 census at 12 years old, the Post Office is at Rockford. There are no CMR's. The data presented is from his Pension records, the number of which is #6778. He enlisted 4 May 1864 at Rockford and served in Suttle's Company, Coosa County Home Guards. There were 102 men in this unit composed of the very young the old and some from the Invalid Corp's. Used in the local area as guards to maintain order as well as round up deserters. Discharged 19 May 1865. After his death, his wife applied for a pension # 1546 and it was approved. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 2 x removed. He died 21 Jan 1909 in Saulter, Coosa Co. Ala. and is buried at Olive Branch Cem. in that place.

George was 47 years old. Enlisted 25 July 1864 at Rockford, Coosa County Alabama in Capt Logan's Company Mounted Reserves. He has two cards in his archival file. He was the Father in Law of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed.

JE Bell was wounded and captured at Hatcher's run in March of 1865. After the war, he became a Baptist Circuit Preacher and established First Baptist Church in Johnson City, Texas (still in existence), rode circuit as far west as Marfa, Texas.
