10th Arkansas Cavalry

Colonel A.R. Witt after his escape from the Maple Leaf (a pow ship) returned to Van Buren County Ark. in the summer of 1863 and organized the 10th Ark. Cavalry also known as Witt's Cavalry.Most members had served with the 10th Ark. Inf. including his brothers Sgt. John Gibson Witt, Sgt. Jeremiah Witt, Milton K. Witt in addition he recruited his other brothers for the 10th Cavalry,Charles William Witt and 16 year old 1/2 brother Jesse Witt,Jr. Col. Witt surrendered the 10th at Jacksonport, Ark. on June 5,1865.

Charles joined the cavalry when it was organized by his oldest brother Col. A.R. Witt in the summer of 1863. A Federal report dated August 13, 1864 by Col. A. H. Ryan,c.o. 3rd Ark. U.S. Inf., states that one of Col. Witt's brothers had been captured near Quitman, Ark. Charles Witt was sent to the West Alton, Ill. pow camp where he died in Dec. 1864 and is interred at North Alton Confederate Cemetery. There are 1,635 persons interred in a common grave which is marked by a large monument with names of the interred listed and he is one.

Jeremiah Witt was parolled at Port Hudson, La. in July, 1863 and returned home to Van Buren County, Ark. where his older brother organized the 10th Ark. Cavalry from members of the 10th Ark.Inf.that had surrendered at Port Hudson. On the Price expedition to Missouri he had a fight with a Major Blocher and had to be whisked out of camp by his brother Col. A.R. Witt and reassigned to the 1st Ark. Composite which ' laid down their arms in Marshall, Texas and walked home' at the end of the war.

Sgt. J.G. Witt served under his brother Capt. later Col. A.R. Witt from the beginning of the 10th Ark. Inf. in 1861 to the end of the 10th Ark. Cavalry on June 5, 1865.

Milton Witt served in 10th Ark. Inf. and after Port Hudson returned home and served a short time in the 10th Ark. Cavalry. In Dec. 1863 he was murdered by Redlegs and Unionists guided to his home by the union scout Thomas Jefferson (Jeff) Williams. Their target was Col. A.R. Witt who later tracked Williams and killed him. Such was the war in Arkansas.

Jesse Witt, Jr. was the younger 1/2 brother of the 5 Witt brothers serving in the 10th Ark. Cavalry CSA. Young Jesse was 16 years old when he joined in August, 1864. He went on the Sterling Price expedition to Missouri as did all his brothers with the exception of Charles William Witt who had been captured and sent to the West Alton, Ill POW camp. He and brothers Allen R., John G., and Jeremiah survived the war, Milton and Charles did not.

Born 1828 and died abt 1870. He enlisted in Independence County with the 10th (Witt’s) cavalry at age 38, had blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, and stood 5’ 10”. He was assigned to the 15th (Buster’s) battalion cavalry. He was assigned to the 45th Arkansas Cavalry and this unit surrendered on May 11, 1865 as part of Brigadier-General M. Jeff Thompsons command and was paroled Jun 5, 1865 at Jackson Port Ark. Parents: • Phillip R. Herrington Sr • Ann Herrington, daughter of Daniel James Melvin Jr.

Calvin also served in the 10th Arkansas Infantry and was paroled at Port Hudson. In the muster role for Witt's Cavalry, his name is spelled Rodgers.
