1st Arkansas Cavalry

My g-g-grandfather. His father-in-law John Stephen Loftin, and two brothers-in-law Giles Loftin and Meredith Loftin served in Co. D of the same regiment.

George Davis, Private, 1st Arkansas Cavalry (Union) Company A, was the son of Thomas J. and Elizabeth (Glen) Davis. He was from Newton County, Missouri. At the time of his enlistment, 14 May 1862, he was living in Crawford County, Arkansas. His brother, Philip, served in the 15th Missouri Cavalry (Union). His brothers, Thomas H. and Wiley, served in the 6th Missouri Cavalry (Union). His brother, James, fought for the Confederacy. George Davis was killed in action at Fayetteville, Arkansas, 18 April 1863. He is buried at the National Cemetery, Fayetteville, Arkansas. (He transfered to Company H in October 1862.)

mustered in and out of the unit at Cassville, MO Lewis Harp went back to the hills of Arkansas and some of his descendents started the Harp's Grocery stores seen all over the area today. We have a picture of him in his uniform with Bowie knife and revolver at side.

John joined the 1st Arkansas (Union) Cavalry, Co. E, headquartered in Fayetteville, AR. Unit was organized 6-10-1862 at Springfield, MO, and fought a skirmish at Vine Prairie, White Oak River, and near the mouth of the Mulberry River, Feb. 2-3, 1863. The Lees suffered at the hands of bushwackers and others loyal to the South. By all accounts, his wife, Nancy Jane Harbin Lee, was a forceful woman and, common among all branches of her huge family, is the tale of Nancy protecting her husband from marauding troops during the war by hiding him in a mattress. Threatened with hanging if she didn`t reveal his hiding place, she steadfastly exclaimed: 'Hang, and be damned!' They eventually left her alone. Nevertheless, to escape the danger posed by their neighbors, they packed up in a wagon train and moved to Galliton Co., Il, where they reamined for several years.

'Doc's' two brothers, Samuel and Osborne, also served in company F, First 'Loyal' Arkansas Cavalry.

Osborne Jeffreys was the youngest of three Jeffreys brothers to serve in the First Arkansas Union Cavalry. He and his brothers, Marmaduke and Samuel, were farming in Benton County Arkansas at the time of their enlistment. The last entry in Osborne's Service Record is the notation: 'Killed by rebels while on patrol, Nov. 4th, 1864'.

Samuel Jeffreys served honorably and was discharged at the end of the war but died of consumption in Missouri in 1866. His two brothers, Marmaduke and Osborne, also served in Company F.

[3 x great grandfather] Mustered in 31 Aug 1863 at Springfield, MO (but credited to Osage Twp., Benton Co., AR). In Jul or Aug 1864, while serving as a guard to escort a train from Cassville, MO to Fayetteville, AR, he suffered sunstroke, causing permanent disabilities. Mustered out with the rest of the company at Fayetteville, AR on 23 Aug 1865.

Peter O Pruett joined the Union Forces in AR in 1862. His Muster Roll sheets show he was a private in Co's F and B, 1 Ark Cav. He mustered in at Newton AR in Aug 10, 1862, as a Private, aged 22 years. Sheets are every two months and show he was present in Co F until transfer in Oct 1, 1862 to Company B. On the one dated Feb 28, 1863, the remarks: Absent without leave. Reported dead since Jany. 2nd, 1863. He was present again in March and April 1836. Sheet dated Jan & Feb, 1865, said he was absent. Remarks: With forage train. Muster-out Roll dated Fayetteville Ark, Aug 23, 1865 - Muster out to date Aug 23, 1865, Last paid to Feb 28,1865. Clothing account: Last settled Oct 31, 1864. Am't for cloth'g in kind or money adv'd $47 4/100. Due U.S. for arms, equipments, $c, $8.52/100. Bounty due $100 Remarks: Stop 40 for 1 Brush wiper and Thoug/Thong?. Also served in Co. 'E,' 1st Ark. Cav. Enlisted August 7, 1862 at Cassville, Barry County, Mo. for three years. Disabled and discharged March 23, 1863. Also served in the Stone County Missouri Home Guards prior to enlisting in the 1st Arkansas Cavalry. Buried at Snider Cemetery east of Cato, Mo.

Charles Bradford O'Neal enlisted on July 25, 1862 along with many other relatives in Company G of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry. During the Battle of Praire Grove he was captured and taken prisoner by the Confederates. Later in December he was shot by the Confederates.

Relationship: Husband's Gr grandfather. John H. Ruff fought with his father (Capt. David Crockett Ruff)and two younger brothers (William Walker Ruff and Pleasant Webber Ruff) for the Union during the War of the Rebellion. It was unpopular to be a Union sympathizer, and the family moved from Arkansas to Missouri during this time to avoid conflict with neighbors.

Fountain A. Parrish: Son of Cecila Land & Garland Parrish. Most LAND family cousins in N.C.& Tn. were Confederate while those in Indiana,Illinois,& Ky. fought for the Union. Regiment Name 1 Ark. Cav. My husband's 2 Great Grandfather Thomas Jefferson Tucker enlisted 21 Nov 1862 Cassville, AR. Mustered out 23 Aug 1865 Fayetteville, AR.

Pvt Holt was my maternal Great Grandfather. He died in Harrison, OK in 1905

Son of a Scottish immigrant, Ptolema was a Texas County, then Phelps County, Missouri farmer. Joined Union cavalry in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. As with many of the members of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry, Ptolema hailed from Missouri to primarily chase after Ozarkian bushwackers and guerrillas. Fought in the Battle of Prairie Grove against his future In-law Green Berry Harris (8th Missouri Infantry - CSA). Their farms would join near Vida, Missouri in Phelps County after the war. Ptloema served in a special detachment as head cook for the wagon drivers at the Fayetteville, Ark. headquarters through most of the war. Died at the Soldiers Home in St. James, Missouri in 1903. Buried at the City (Old Masonic) cemetery of St. James next to two of his three wives.

James is my Great Grandfather. I have several different middle names for him. His marriage record states it's 'Thompson Cray' yet bible records state his middle name is 'Thompson Craig'. I don't know where the 'Thompson' part comes from? He lived in Lincoln, Washington County, Arkansas in 1860 with his mother Lydia/Lidu (Andrews?)
