6th Connecticut Infantry

enlisted Aug 21, 1861 mustered Sep 3, 1861 in the 6th Regt Conn Vol (INF), Co A, at the age of 20. He was discharged at Beaufort, SC, Nov 8, 1862 as disabled with chronic diarrhea. (Malaria ???) He had a light complexion, blue eyes and light hair and was listed as a farmer-mechanic.

He only achieved the rank of private. He was described as having light complexion, grey eyes and light hair, a mechanic and 18 years old. In Nov 1864, his unit is listed as before Richmond. He re-enlisted Dec 24, 1863 at Hilton Head, SC. He was wounded at or near Bermuda 100, VA, May 20, 1864, was listed as AWOL Nov 10-12, 1864 at Staten Island, Ft. Richmond, NY, arrested and transferred to his unit aboard the steamship Vomax Feb 23, 1864. He was acquitted of the AWOL charges Jan 24, 1865, and released to the hospital at Point of Rocks, VA (Ft. Monroe, VA) where he died. This malady was possibly malaria or yellow fever.

Bejamin Prouty started off in the 1st Conn and fought at 1st Bull Run. On Sep 12, 1861 he was commissioned a captain in the 6th Conn. His unit went south to Hilton Head, SC, he was captured and confined in Libby Prison, Richmond and at Annapolis, Md, was exchanged and returned to service. He resigned on account of physical disabiity on Dec 31st, 1863. After the war he was Colonel of the 1st Conn national guard on Jan 19, 1869 and served for one year. Our genealogy said he transferred to the 4th Conn, but upon viewing the National Archives it states he was in the 6th Conn. Much thanks to Jeff Payne on confirming Benjamin F. looking for any info on my great, great grandfather edward walters. have located his grave in southington ct., would like info on relitives in the area.

William H. Dougal, barely 17 years old and living in Naugatuck, Ct, enlisted in the 6th Ct Vol Infantry on Aug 23, 1861. He mustered in on Sept 4, 1861. Pvt Dougal was wounded and lost his right arm at the Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. He was discharged on Nov 16, 1863. After the loss of his arm, William set out to master penmanship, bookkeeping, and telegraphy. He re-enlisted as a military telegraph operator and constructor and before the war ended, was in charge of a military line from Nashville, Tenn leading out into a guerilla infested area. He was discharged on Aug 23, 1865. He went on to be a trial magistrate in New Preston, CT and was Comander of Upton Post 14 and a GAR member for over 40 years. He was in the legislature of 1909-1910 and a member of the committee on military affairs where he lobbyed legislature for the benefit of the Soldiers' Home and State Aid for veterans and widows.

His real last name was Bollerer. It was said he used a false name because he was not 18 yet.

Son of Horace Wheeler Nichols and Abigail Chloe (Holt) Nichols of Naugatuck, CT. His brothers Horace (died at Gettysburg), Edward and George all served the Union in other regiments. Enlisted in Company K, Connecticut 6th Infantry Regiment on 12 Sep 1861. Mustered out on 11 Sep 1864.

James Young was captured at Drewry's Bluff on 16 May 1864 and soon ended up in Andersonville prison, which he survived. He wrote his memoirs about his experience in Andersonville.
