My ancestor died in New Orleans in 1862. He left behind a w ife and three children .Like many of his comrades in arms he was stricken by yellow fever while working on the ill fated Vicksburg canal project.Many a good man was used up providing service that made little or no sense.It is so today as it was then.To do ones duty has always been the emark of the real heroes in our past, and in the present.We should learn from our history , but seems we make the same mistakes with our gallant forces in every generation.

Charles was born Charles Adrian Jean Andree in New Orleans in 1847. Leaving the orphanage where he had been since age 14, he left in June of 1863 to join the Confederacy. Turned down (it must be assumed they thought he as part-black), he marched five miles and joined the 9th Connecticut as a musician (Drummer). Because of a mix-up in the mustering in, he was re-mustered in in December of 1863. After the war he settled in Arkansas, and his last name became Andres.

My Great-Great Grandfather Gallagher enlisted in August of 1862. He was with the 9th when New Orleans fell as they were the first federal regiment to march into that city after it surrendered. He reenlisted in 1864 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He deserted while on furlough in New Haven CT. He returned to his farm in Easthampton MA where he was a successful tobacco farmer until his death.
