John is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Plant City, Hillsboro Co, Florida. He was born in 1807 in Georgia. He was abt 53 years old when he enlisted in Co B 1st Florida Infantry. This data is from his CSA gravestone. He died 21 July 1865. I have not found his military records and do not know if he was wounded. I do think the hardships of military service hastened his death. His son John Jr. was 28 and served in the 1st Fl Infantry Regt. in Co D.

My GtGtgrandfather who died on 28 May 1864 at New Hope Church in Dallas, GA. His cousin Grady Hamilton wrote home to Pinellas, Florida: 'Cousin James, would you let Mary and Rebecca, tell Hannah the sad intelligence, that John J. Hamilton has been killed by the Yankees. It was a battle at New Hope Church, Ga., this past May 28th. John has said Hannah had always loved her sister in Law Mary, so much. My heart bleeds for what I have asked her to do. I was near him when he was shot. The Yankees came, the west road toward our works in a mist of rain. About 150 to 200 steps, and before they knew it, we fired. John had reached over to assist another reb, when a bullet struck him in the right temple, I caught him and lay him down. He never spoke or groaned. Closed his own eyes, and died in a few minutes. He had not a frown, was calm, serene, dignified and beautiful in death. The saddest duty I ever had, was his burial. I had no opportunity to afford him any religious service. We had so many to bury, we did not have the time. I did give him my meed of reverence. John had told me he wanted his remains if he died from home to be carried to the family burrying ground. John is buried on the south west side of the cross roads at New Hope Church. I put him a board with his name in pencil. The Yankees made a desperate assault on our works, but we held. They were repulsed each time. We did have a victory, and set the Yankees tails running. We have moved back toward Atlanta, and Kenesaw Mountain. I was told that John A. Hamilton in the 3rd Virginia, Co E. has made Captain. Tell Hannah, Louis, Clemant and John, I love them and pray this war is over soon. This dispatch of personal effects, with letter is sent with my friend William of the Jackson Rifles, who has sick leave home. Grady Hamilton'

This was my great great grandfather, married to Ann Lofton, originally from Tennessee but migrated mid 1850''s or so to Florida. Looking for additional information. Enlisted as a private on 2 april 1861 in Monticello FL, wounded 20 sept 1863 at Chicamauga, Ga, lost right leg while carrying flag, promoted to first lt. first class on 18 april 1864, paroled on 15 may 1865 at Tallahassee, FL. Enlisted with his son James W. Neeley on same day. I believe James died in the battle at Gettysburg. Looking for any and all information. Thank you.

Private Dowling was elected Commander of the UCV in 1946, and his photo appeared on the front of The Atlanta Journal Magazine in April of 1945. He was the last resident of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta.

Charles was 17 when he enlisted 30 Apr 1864. He served 11 months until the end of the war. He appears on a POW roll dated July 1865. He was in the Battle of Olustie Florida. Commanded by Capt Dickinson. The gravestone application provided the data. He lived until 16 Apr 1918 and is buried in Flemington Baptist Church cem. in Marion Co. Fla. He is distantly related to me by marriage.

Jonathan was born born in Marion Co Ga. At age 17 he is in Levy Co Fla. He joined at age 17 on 25 June 1864 Capt Hodges Co. Fla. Reserves which became Co I. His eleven months of service first finds him working with a Telegraph Line team. His unit surrendered in Baldwin Co. Fla on 18 May 1865.

George was a 19 years old from Bradford Co. Florida. He enlisted in Co I 1st Florida Infantry on 21 May 1864 at Lake Butler, Union County Florida. His wife Sarah Eleanor Dowling filed for pension on 16 July 1909 from Bradford Co. Florida.

Andrew Jackson DeFee enlisted on 10 May 1861 in Company K, 1st Florida Infantry Regiment in Pensacola, Fla. for the 'War of the Rebellion'(Civil War)...He was wounded in 1863 and was paroled at Union Springs,Alabama. He was a Sgt. Andrew is buried in Aberfoil Cemetery, Bullock Co, Alabama. His wife Lucinda is also here as well as their children and others relations.
