James was my Great Grandfather. He was born in 1844 in Ouincy, Gadsden County, Florida. He died in 1914 in Palatka, Putnam County, Florida. He married Martha J. Long in 1869 in Quincy . They had 6 sons, Charles, the youngest, was my Grandfather.

Discharged due to a disability on July 1682 In Knoxville Tennessee. Little over two months later, he enlisted in co a, 6th Florida. He was the one of the last 16 soldiers in his company that survived the war.

Son of Dr. Malcolm Nicholson. Enlisted at Quincy 5 Nov. 1862. Mustered out as Quarter Master Sgt on 26 Apr. 1865. He and brother Archibald were early Gadsden County tobacco growers. Later Gadsden County Clerk of Circuit Court.

Nephew of Dr. Malcolm Nicholson of Gadsden County. Enlisted as 3rd Lt. in Co. B, 6th Florida Infantry at Quincy on 12 March 1862 Resigned and mustered out at Knoxville on 15 Jul 1863. Jointed Co. D, Florida 5th Cavalry Battalion, as 2nd Lt. on 24 Aug 1863

Born 1837, died 1907. A physician and son of Dr. Malcolm Nicholson of Gadsden County. Enlisted as sergeant on 3 Dec. 1862 in Quincy. Mustered out on 26 Apr 1865 at Durham Station NC. Practiced medicine in Attapulgus GA for many years.

Enlisted March 1862 at Marianna, Fla. Remained with 6th Infantry Reg. until his capture at Brentwood, Ten. during the battle for Nashville in December, 1864. Was imprisoned at Camp Douglass, Ill. where he died of pneumonia in January 1865. Buried in Confederate Mound at Camp Douglass.

John was born in Georgia 22 April 1820. He enlisted in Capt. Finley's Co. and mustered 17 May 1862 in Jackson Co. Fla. He was 42 y/o. He has 20 cards in his archival file, unfortunately most are illegible. His date of death is listed as 6 May 1864 at Dalton Ga. which coincides with the battle of Rocky Face Ridge which was fought there on the 5th of May 1864. Battles: Confederate heartland offensive. Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and was killed at Battle of Rocky Face Ridge. His body has not been accounted for. His wife filed for and received a pension based on his service. She filed from Barber Co. Alabama on 25 April 1889. John was the father-in-law of my distant cousin.

1842 – Jan 9, 1864. Enlisted on Mar 18, 1862 in Jackson County Florida. His company was stationed at the Mount Vernon Arsenal at Chattahoochee, in Gadsden County in April, 1862. November 24 was dark, with low clouds, fog, and drizzling rain. General Bragg, ordered his troops to occupy the newly constructed fortifications atop Missionary Ridge. This line of entrenchments lay “along the physical crest rather than what is termed the ‘military crest’ - that is, along the top-most geographic line rather than along the highest line from which the enemy could be seen and fired upon. Breckinridge’s Corps defended the southern end of the ridge, with Stewart’s and Bate’s divisions aligned from south to north on the crest. Later that night, General Jesse Finley led two regiments of his brigade into the entrenchments on the crest of Missionary Ridge. Some did not reach the trenches atop the formidable position until after midnight, yet at dawn on November 25, 1863, the 6th Florida stood ready to meet the enemy. Finley’s right flank rested on the Moore Road, with his left connecting with Colonel Randall Gibson’s Brigade. He was captured on Missionary Ridge at Chickamauga on Nov 25, 1863. He arrived at Rock Island on Dec 8, 1863. William (Hargrove) Sims was born around 1830 in Mariana, FL (Jackson County). He married Maria Emanuel in Feb. 1855. He enlisted on 2/11/1862 at Apalachicola. He was wounded in the arm at the Battle of Chickamauga (9/19/1863), and died of pyaemia on 10/30/1863 in the Academy Hospital, Marietta GA (he is buried in a local Confederate Cemetery) information obtained from the Biographical Rosters of Florida's Confederate and Union Soldiers 1861-1865 (Hartman) Vol. II, p. 634

Born February 3 1821 Columbus, Henry Co. Alabama. Raised a company of men in early 1862 that company was mustered into service March 11,1862 at Chattahoochee Arsenal as Co. G 6th Florida. Later assigned to the Army of Tennessee.

Seaborn Weatherby is my Great Grandfather. His name appears on the Roll of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Chickamauga, but I'm unsure for what reason. If anyone has information on why he was selected to have his name placed in the Roll of Honor, I would be very appreciative. Peter and Joseph Eldridge were brothers and enlisted on the same day in the same unit. Peter McCuey Eldridge was Captured December 7, 1864 at Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, TN as Private in Company I, 6th Florida Infantry. He was captured 12/7/64 in Murfreesboro and released on oath 6/12/65 from Camp Chase prison. Interesting note his brother my gr/gr/grandfather Joseph W. Eldridge died 6/6/65 also as a POW in North Carolina. Peter McCuey Eldridge died in Ponce De Leon, Florida 13 Aug 1891 not many miles from where he enlisted with his brother.

Robert D. McSween was my gggrandfather. He married Sarah Ann Dew. They had two daughters: Mary Verbena McSween(my ggrandmother) and Sarah Elizabeth McSween. He submitted his letter of resignation dated July 14, 1863, in Knoxville, TN due to being unable to pass the examining board. I do not know where he is buried.

Jesse S. Sutton was my Great, Great Grandfather. He is buried along with his father and brother (Benjamin) in our family graveyard, Otter Creek. Benjamin served with Jesse in the 6th Florida Inf Reg Co I. Jesse was captured at Dallas, Ga. May 28 1864 and sent to Rock Island, POW Camp in Ill. After 6 months of suffering in this POW camp. He joined the Union Army (galvanized yankee) and went out west (Colorado) to fight the Indians. He was discharged from the Union Army in Nov 1865 and returned to Holmes County Florida where he is buried with his wife. I have copies his and Benjamin's CSA Service Records, and Jesse's Union Service Record.

He enlisted on 4/1/1862 for 3 years at Mt. Vernon, Fl. ,and was present at 11/12/1862 through 7/9/1863. He was wounded twice, once in the arm and the second in the thigh. He was on leave to recover from his last wound at war's end. I have a copy of his pay records. His wife received a widow's pension after his death until her death.
