Special Orders No. 268'....para. XIX. 'The following named privates are mutually transferred each to the others command, all parties consenting, provided no expense to the Confederate States be thereby incurred: J.B. Barfield, Company A, Tenth Battalion Georgia Volunteers; A.B. Edge, Company B, Twenty-second Battalion Georgia Artillery.' Jesse Bud Barfield Obituary: From The Butler Herald: Volume 29, # 11, January 17, 1905 J. B. Barfield died at his home on Monday. Had a stroke of paralysis. Was 65 years of age. Leaves wife and 5 sons and 2 daughters, Messrs. William, Berry, John, Thomas, and Monroe Barfield. Miss Mary Eliza[Liza] and Mrs. Isiah[Isaac] Barfield.

Burwell D. McKay also known by his real first name of Burrell, was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina. He moved to Macon,Ga. and joined Co. A of the Macon County Guards, 10th Battalion Ga. Infantry on 22 April 1862 and was killed or died on 10 June 1862 in Macon,Ga. He is the brother of Jacob Madison and Isaish Jefferson McKay of the 8th South Carolina Infantry Co. E. Burwell's grave is unknown and I would love some help finding it.

Enlisted 8 March 1862. Joined the Worth Rebels. Injured at Hanover Junction in May of 1864 and was mustered out that same day.

David S. Brown was born in the year 1810 [per military records and death record]. David S. Brown was born in S. Carolina. David S. Brown was 50 years old when he entered the Civil War in Company B Worth's Rebels 10th Battalion of Georgia Infantry. David got sick while guarding the union soldiers in the hospital. David's last payroll was in Feb. 1863 and shows David S. Brown 'sick in the hospital Richmond.] David S. Brown died of Typhoid fever and was in General Hospital #1 [Old Alms House]. David died and was buried April 4, 1863 in Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. David's middle initial could possibly stand for his fathers middle name [Sumner] or possibly Spencer [his uncle's name]. David named one of his sons with the name Spencer, as researchers we tend to feel that David's middle name was Spencer, but there is no factual record found to date to verify that opinion. David S. Brown - Enlisted March 4th, 1862, and Served in the Civil War (Confederate War) in Co. B. 10th Battalion, Sorrel's Brigade, Mahone's Division 'Worth's Rebels'. There were 120 men in this battalion. 10th Infantry Battalion (also called 3rd Battalion) was formed at Americus, Ga., during Summer of 1862, under Capt. Henderson. David joined March 4, 1862, from Worth County, Ga. under Daniel Henderson for a period of three years or the war. Its five companies of District #1 and District # 2 and Georgia District - were made up of men from Macon and Sumter, Worth, counties. The 10th Battalion Worth's Rebels remained at Camp Stephens until May 14, 1862 when the company received orders to proceed to Macon, Georgia to guard several thousand Federal prisoners Union Soldiers at Camp Ogethorpe. The unit served on the Georgia coast, then guarded prisoners and stores at Macon, Ga. January - February 1863; the 10th Battalion proceeded under orders to Richmond, Virginia. They were stationed between the James Rver and Cape Fear. The men camped out around Manchester{across the River from Richmond, Va.} David Brown, under Capt. Henderson --- was shown as absent and at the hospital in Richmond, Virginia. David Brown got sick while guarding the prisoners and was placed in a hospital in Richmond,Virginia. 2/21/1863. - b. 1848 in Georgia Served as a Confederate Soldier in Calhoun County, Georgia. Thomas Downs was Honorably Discharged because of a disability inflicted (Injury) in the Confederate Army in 1861. This is found in the Calhoun County, Georgia Confederate War records. Civil War records in history of Worth Co., Ga. read: enlisted March 4, 1862. Wounded at St. Petersburg, Virginia. June 22, 1864. Furloughed home and never returned to service. Thomas David Downs served over two years in the Civil War before being injured. Because Thomas David Downs didn't return to military service he had his voting rights removed from him in Worth Co. Georgia. Thomas, his wife and family members decided to move to Texas. Some children were left behind in Worth Co. Ga. The cemeteries in the area Thomas & Nancy lived are Bogg Cemetery; Lovelady Evergreen Cemetery; Antich Cemetery; Douglas; and possibly Bynum Cemetery. The majority of the DOWNES/DOWNS family in Texas are buried at Creek Cemetery in the Austonio area of Houston Co. Texas. Traveling was by wagons and horses in the past and families tended to bury the loved one in nearby cemeteries where they lived. Thomas David Downs and his wife Nancy were in the Precinct #4 which is the Austonio area in 1900 census and then they are not in the 1910 census in the area. They either died or they lived with one of their children. A search of the 1910 census forward to find them will be done. After searching I could not find them in any home of their children in 1910 census of Houston Texas. Found! a death certificate at Courthouse in Crockett Texas. Nancy died 9/16/1908 and is buried at Creek Cemetery. There was no record for Thomas David Downs but families tended to bury parents together so he is in high probability buried there too. A trip will need to be taken to check to see if there are two adult gravesites beside or near the other Downs family members which only have stones marking them. The graves will probably be Thomas and Nancy's graves.

William was born 29 Sept. 1844 in Appling Co. Ga. He is 16 on the 1860 census living in Worth Co. Ga. the home of his future wife. [CLARIFICATION] there are two men with the same name in the archival files from Ga. the other one is 32 years old and is a Pvt in the 57th Ga. Infantry] Our William is 17 when he joins 4 March 1862 Capt. Daniel Henderson's Co. Co B 10th Battalion Ga Infantry, enlisting for 3 years or the war at Isabella, Worth Co. Fla. [Worth Rebels]. William became ill and remained sick for the duration of his tour of duty. He has 5 documented hospitalizations for chronic gastrointestinal problems and high fever. He may have suffered from undiagnosed Typhoid Fever. June 1862, Oct 1862 he is sent home to recover. March 1863 in hospital at Petersburg. April in the hospital at Williamsburg Va. In Feb of 1865 his unit is separated from the main battalion and the troops are desperate for food and shoes. On 15 Feb 1865 he is forced to lay down his arms and surrender. His Battalion saw action in the Suffolk Campaign, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Deep Botton and Weldon, Railroad. He survived the war and is buried at Socrum Cem. Lackland, Polk Co Fla. He is the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Calvin enlisted at Macon, Ga. on 4 March 1862 in Co D. Whittle Guards. Thia became Co. D 10th Georgia Infantry Regt. He lived in Macon and was the son of Rigdon Thomas and Catherine Murray. He is admitted to the Wayside Hospital in Richmond Va. on March 7 1863 suffering from deafness. He is moved to Chimborazo #2. He is captured at Harpers Farm on 6 April 1865 and released on 21 June at Point Lookpout Md.

Born in June, 1838, James Marion Allen joined Company E, 10th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on May 20, 1861 in Jonesboro. The company was originally known as Clayton Sharpshooters and later Benjamin Infantry. His company was the first organized in Clayton County and the regiment left Jonesboro on May 30, 1861. They arrived in Richmond on June 2, 1861 and were initially stationed at Williamsburg. By 1864 he was a corporal. the 10th Georgia was part of the Army of Northern Virginia and participated in many of the major, and some of the bloodiest, battles of the Civil War, including Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness Campaign. When told the 10th Georgia had broken in one battle, the division commander, General Kershaw, reportedly refused to believe the report: 'It is false, the Tenth Georgia was the first to stem the tide at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Topotomoy and Cold Harbor. It NEVER BREAKS.' (Col. A.J. McBride, 'Tenth Georgia at Spotsylvania'. Atlanta Journal, July 20, 1901.)

James was my great-great-grandfather. Her served with the 10th for the entire duration of the war. His regiment, known as the Thomson Guards, fought over 25 battles throughout northern Virginia and eastern Tennessee. James was awarded with distinguished service. After the war he married and had five children. He died June 3, 1882.

Robert H. Swain was a detached nurse in a Richmond, Va. hospital in 1865. He is buried in Zion Hope Church cemetery in Tifton, GA. No dates are on the tombstone but records show that he was born in December 1841 and died in 1924 in Tift County, GA.

Mustered into unit at Abbeville, GA on May 10, 1861 as a Private. Promoted to Second Sergeant on January 1,1862. Wounded by minnie ball in right hip at Battle of Savages Station, VA on June 29, 1862. Elected as 2nd Lieutenant on December 2, 1864. He served as a County Judge in Polk County, Florida from 1874 to 1889. Died Dec 7, 1906 and rests in Fortner Cemetery, Parrish Florida.

I found the tombstone of my third great grandfather in Richmond City, Virginia. He was born November 11, 1811 and died August 24, 1863. It says on his tombstone CO I 10 GA INF CSA. I don't know what battles he fought in or what he died of.
