Maxwell, James K. P.- Private July 13,1861. At home on furlough February 28,1865. No later record. The men in Company A were the 'Delhi Rangers'

My 1st cousin James Andrew Adams served during the War Between the States as a Confederate soldier with Company B, 15th Georgia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. Rosters of Confederate Soldiers list him on page 418, Vol. 2 as follows: James A. Adams, Private Mar. 1, 1864. Wounded in rt. arm and both legs at Wilderness, Va. May 6, 1864. Roll for Feb 28, 1865, last on file, shows him absent without leave. Pension records show he was home on wounded furlough at close of war, born in Ga. He filed for pension in Hart Co., Ga. James married Mary A. Watson. Both are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Lavonia, Georgia.

My 1st cousin Reuben M. Adams (1841-1925) served as a Confederate soldier with Company B 15th Georgia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. He enlisted May 10, 1862 as a Private and was captured and paroled at Hartwell, Georgia on May 17, 1865. He married Mary Elizabeth Mauldin.

W.R.McWhorter enlisted in Co. E, 15th, Ga. 7/1/1861. Transferred to Co. I, 59th Ga.7/1/1862 until captured in 1863. Imprisoned at Pt.Lookout , Maryland until released on 6/29/1865 upon swearing allegiance to U.S.

1861-1865, U.S. Civil War Soldiers: Name: James H. Mitchell, Private, Confederate, Georgia, Company E, 15th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, National Archives, Film Number: M226 roll 43. James Henry Mitchell (1826-1912), my great-grandfather, enlisted on 15 Jul 1861 at Sparta, GA. Served as a private in Company E, 15th Georgia Infantry, CSA. His records show that he was given $22 duty pay, a $25 clothing allowance and a $50 bounty payment for the period Aug-Sep 1862. He was wounded on 17 Sep 1862 at the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg, MD, and sent home on sick leave. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in the US history with about 23,000 casualties. After 194 days furlough at home he returned to duty near Richmond in the spring of 1862. He received 33 cents/day while on leave. Sometime in late 1863 he was carried on the rolls as absent without leave for an undetermined period. Later he was again present for duty and served from 1 Jan 1864 until the end of the war in April 1865.

15th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Company E,Hancock Volunteers 15th Infantry Regiment, organized in the spring of 1861 at Athens, Georgia, contained men from (E) (K) Hancock, (C) (F) (I) Elbert, (G) Lincoln (H)Hart (A)Wilkes, (B)Franklin, and (D)Taliaferro On July 22, 1861, the unit was reported to be en route to Virginia and upon its arrival was assigned to the Potomac District. Later it was placed in General Toombs' and Benning's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 15th was involved in the campaigns of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, except when it was detached with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and Knoxville. It continued the fight in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and later around Appomattox. The regiment totalled 441 men in April, 1862, and lost 108 during Seven Days' Battles. It sustained 54 casualties at Second Manassas, 36 during the Maryland Campaign, and forty percent of the 368 engaged at Gettysburg. From April 14, to May 6, there were 73 disabled, and from August 1 to December 31, 1864, it lost 50 killed and wounded. At the surrender, 20 officers and 226 men were present. The field officers were Colonels Dudley M. DuBose, William M. McIntosh, William T. Millican, and Thomas W. Thomas; Lieutenant Colonels Stephen Z. Hearnsberger, Peter J. Shannon, T.J. Smith, and Linton Stephens; and Major Joseph T. Smith. James H. Mitchell Residence Hancock County GA; Enlisted on 7/15/1861 as a Private. Wounded 9/17/1862 Sharpsburg, MD. He was Surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA

George enlisted Feb 27., 1862. Army of Northern Virginia, Lincoln Co., Georgia. He was wounded at Sharpsburg,Maryland. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, released Jun 16, 1865. Served under General James Longstreet-- Sources of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865.

Peyton was wounded and received a skull fracture at 2nd Manassas Aug 30, 1862 also, captured at Gettysburg. Brother to George Washington Norman.

Transfered May 15, 1861 from Co.L, 6th Alabama Inf. CS. Captured at Gettysburg, July 3rd, 1863. Paroled home on Feb. 28, 1865.

Thomas was killed on July 2nd, 1863 at Gettysburg when Benning''s Brigade attacked through G.W. Weikert''s ''triangular field.'' Thomas'' diary is the subject of Mark Nesbitt''s ''35 Days to Gettysburg.'' After Thomas was killed, his brother, Pvt. Robert A. Ware, recorded this poem in the last page of the diary: ''Many of our brother soldiers whose life was made a sacrifise upon our country''s altar. There the weeping willow gently waves over his grave. And there we prayed that God would guard and protect that little mound.''

Enlisted 15 July 1861 in the Pool Volunteers. Captured at Gettysburg 2 July 1863. He was forwarded from Fort Delaware to Point Lookout, MD 20 Oct 1863. Died at the hospital of Point Lookout 20 Dec 1863. He was married to Emely Mitchell. His twin brother, Weldon, also served in this Company.

James Elbert Henley (b-May 8, 1844, d-May 3, 1890) was the son of John S. Henley (merchant and property owner) and grandson of John Seviers (b-1802) of Franklin County, Georgia. This county eventually became Hart County (where John S Henley’s store was located), and was created in 1853 from parts of Franklin and Elbert Counties. Following the Civil War Henley attended medical school and was a physician in Atlanta and Douglasville, Georgia. He was married in 1869, had a son, James T. Henley, (also a physician) in 1870 (d- 1942), and a daughter Margaret Henley (b – 1878).

Enlisted Mar 4, 1862, died May 3 1862 of disease in Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, VA.

During the War Between the States, my gg uncle James Polk Leaird (1845-1863) enlisted 10 March 1863 as a private with Company H, 15th Georgia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. He was killed 19 Sept 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was the son of James W. Leaird and Mary O'Barr of the Reed Creek District of Hart County, Georgia.

My gg uncle Joseph Hezekiah (1843-1863) enlisted as a Private in the Confederate army on 1 March 1863 with Company H, 15th Georgia Infantry. He was captured at Carrsville, Virginia, May 1863. Paroled at Fortress Monroe, Virginia, 13 May 1863. Exchanged at City Point, Virginia, 23 May 1863. Died of disease at Lynchburg, Virginia, 3 July 1863, in General Hospital. Buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Lynchburg; No. 6, 1st line, Lot 192--Miller's. The Confederate Cemetery is in the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg and there is a stone marker at Joseph's burial site.

My gg uncle Whitner (1838-1864) enlisted as a Confederate soldier on 15 July 1861 with Company H, 15th Georgia Infantry as a Private but later was promoted to a Sergeant. He was wounded at Sharpsburg, 17 Sept 1862. Captured at Gettysburg 2 July 1863. Exchanged. Whitner was killed during the battle in Wilderness, Virginia 1864. It is not known where he was buried.

My 2nd cousin Weldon C. Pearman (1830-1863) enlisted as a Private on 4 Mar 1862 with the 15th Georgia Regiment, Company H, 'Pool Volunteers' from Hart County, Georgia. He died of typhoid fever in the hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, 13 April 1863. His regiment was part of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was married to Nancy Catherine Parker.

Enlisted August 29, 1862. Wounded at Wilderness, Va. May 6,1864. On detail duty in Richmond, Va. hospital February 28,1865 after being wounded a second time. No later record. (Born in South Carolina August 18,1833.) (ga.state pension records show he was 'discharged by surrender')

Immigrant from Prussia Served his newly adopted country from the outbreak of war 'til his death in the 2nd battle of Darbytown Road. Wounded at Chickamauga. Commanded Fort Gilmer. Fell in the field of honor, rallying his men. His general said of him: 'Not one of Napoleon's Marshals was ever so brave.' JD Waddell said of his death: 'A braver soldier never fought beneath a plume.'

Enlisted June 15, 1862, not sure if he was in Virginia for the start of the Seven Days, but assume he was. He was promoted to 2nd LT. on Aug 2, 1863 in the aftermath of Gettysburg, and surrendered with the unit at Appomattox, April 9, 1865.
