Volunteered 1861, Webster County, Ga. Surrendered Appomattox

Started as Drummer Boy - Webster County, GA 17th GA Infantry Company A, participated in battle of Gettysburg. Ended up in Baltimore, MD after the Civil War, noted in 1880 Federal Census as married to Henrietta E. Keene with occupation as House Carpenter, having (5) children. Inmate at Maryland Confederate Soldiers Home, Pikesville, MD until death in May of 1900. Buried in Louden Park Cemetery, Confederate Hill - Baltimore, MD. Children: Martha E Powell, George W Powell, Robert Powell, Florence Powell, Joseph F Powell

Henry enlisted at Buena Vista Georgia on 4 March 1862 by Capt Taylor for the war. He was about 23 years old. He was admitted to Jackson Hospital on 3 August 1864 with chronic diarrhoea and died on the 14th of that month. He is buried at Hollwood Cemetery Richmond Va. Section V lot 88 row 69 -96 I have placed three stones here and will palce one for Henry. Deo Vindice

Wiley was abt 17 when he joined his brother Henry D Chapman in this unit. He was sick a lot and his records reflect the same. He is on a roll of POW's paroled at Jordan Springs Va on 2 August 1863. It appears he was a nurse at the hospital that was captured. He was a patient in Moore Hospital at Danville, Va. on 22 Jan. 1862. No Dx, on form. There are two pay vouchers that place him in Va. He was initially sworn into service by a family member Capt. F. S. Chapman. on 14 August 1862 at Columbus Georgia

Have no information on this distant relative. The name Coussor is one of perhaps a hundred variants of the original surname Cossart. Would appreciate any information someone else may have on this individual.

Joshua was from Bibb County Georgia. He has 12 cards in his archival file. He was 22 years old when he enlisted for the war at Columbus Georgia on 14 August 1861. He was a Teamster with the Brigade Supply Train. His unit surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April 1865. He is buried at Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery, Macon, Bibb County Georgia. Reuben was a Captain in with the Decatur Grays from Bainbridge,Ga. He was a supply officer for the company.He was also a drummer boy in the War of 1812. He is my Great Great Great Great Grandfather.

Henry G. Gainous is my 2nd-greatgrandfather. He and several of his brothers were in various Georgia Infantry units. 2 brothers died during the War; Berry Gainous @ 2nd Manassas (a daughter, born posthumously was named Mary Manassas)& Abram @ Petersburg,VA. Henry enlisted 5 Aug 1861 in Decatur county, GA; was taken prisoner @ Malvern Hill, VA 5 Aug 1862, exchanged @ Aiken's Landing, VA 10 Nov 1862, wounded @ Wilderness, VA 6 May 1864, promoted to Corporal 15 Nov 1864, & surrendered 9 Apr 1865 @ Appomattox, VA

Sampson Johnson enlisted in the Confederacy at Camilla, Mitchell County, Georgia in the spring of 1861. He spent a lot of time in military hospitals having trouble with his left leg. He was in the hospital at Danville, Virginia, The 4th Divison General Hospital, on May 18, 1863. In February 10, 1864 he was in the General Hospital Montg. Springs, Virginia. Sampson stated in his Florida State Confederate Pension Claim that he was with his command at Appomattox Court House at the close of the war. He was discharged at Appomattox, Virginia on the 13 April 1865 on account of the close of the war. He had a Florida State Pension No. 1788.

Capt. McGregor formed the ''Stephens Infantry'' in July 1861. It later became Co. E, 17th Georgia. He served as commander of Co. E until wounded at the battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. He was furloughed to recuperate and resigned his commission in March 1864. His was in command of the entire 17th Georgia regiment briefly from the Sept 1862 until Dec 1862. He was in command of the regiment at the Battle of Antietam.

Manin Shiver has 29 page references in the Confederate Soldier's Archives available online at www.footnote.com The 17th GA was part of Benning's Brigade, which is a well documented unit. He was wounded in the neck at Devil's Den in the battle of Gettysburg and convalesced at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA before rejoining his unit. He was at the battles of Chicamauga and Chattanooga before being sent to the hospital in Macon, GA with chronic disentary. He rejoined his unit with the Army of Northern Virginia in March 1865 in Richmond and remained there until the surrender in April.

My g-grandfather, Allison Jeffcoat, aka William Allison Jeffcoat/Jefcoat, was a member of Co. G, 17th Georgia Infantry. He was wounded 16 May 1864, hospitalized at Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA, and subsequently discharged due to his wound. I believe he enlisted 14 Aug 1861 and have confirmed with the Nat’l Park Service that his unit was at Gettysburg in the Devil’s Den area, which I visited in 2006. The service info is from a copy of my g-grandmother’s Civil War Widow’s Pension, granted in Texas in 1926, and an accompanying affidavit from Maj. Gen. Robert Davis, War Dept., The Adjutant General’s Office, dated 14 September 1926. The pension also indicates his unit was mustered in South Carolina. His grave’s headstone had only his name, some cross-type symbol, and his CSA unit. The stone was stolen from the cemetery 2 yrs ago and I am having it replaced.

Albert was born 5 JUL 1840 in Goodman, Harris County, Georgia. Enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Commissioned (elected) Jr 2nd Lieut, on 15 Aug 1861. His service records are sparse and it was reported that he died 31 Oct 1861 in the hospital. Nothing more is known. John was born 13 Feb 1838 in Cabarrus Co. North Carolina. The family moved to Harris County Georgia when he was young and he is found on the 1850 census at about 12 years old. He was elected to rank of 1st Lieutenant 6 June 1862. Assigned to Benning's Brigade, Field's Division, Longstreet's Corps Army of Northern Virginia. He has 29 pages in his archival file. He suffered from Chronic Diarrhoea and Odontalgia [ tooth ache ] He served honorably for his entire career. His last battle was at Appomattox C.H. He surrendered there and was paroled at Appomattox. He was the husband of Margaret Anna Burch a distant cousin of mine. He moved to Heath, Rockwall County Texas after 1870 and he and his wife are buried in the city cemetery.

Enlisted 15 Aug 1861 from Harris County, Georgia. Died of disease on 10 Dec 1861 in Richmond, VA. His brother Thomas Toliver McGee was in the same company and survived the war.

He died in 1864 in a hospital in Richmond Va. during the Civil War. There was a picture taken of him about three moths prior to his death that I have.

The heading inside the binder Minutes of Minutes fo 'The Terrell County Camp Of United Confederate Veterans, Organized the First Tuesday in September 1893. and Enrollment Book Enrollment, See Page 75 J. W. Lowrey President-Commander Wm. K. Pilsbury Secretary & Act. Adjt. Page 61 Recruits Enlisted March 3rd 1862 Thomas McLendon age 17 years Thomas McLendon isn't listed the Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 National Archives-Washington Civil War Payroll Affidavit: Webster Co. Georgia 24, April 1863 Joseph McLendon under oath said he was the father of Thomas McLendon, deceased, late a Private of Captain A. M. Jones Company 17th Regiment Georgia Volunteers and that the said deceased died leaving neither wife or child and (he) therefore is entitled to all arrears of pay &, that may be found due to said deceased from the Confederate States. And at the same time also appeared Wm. M. Crymes and made oath as aforesaid that he knew the said deceased and knows the said Joseph McLendon his father and that the facts as sworn by said Joseph McLendon are true, and that he is disinterested therein. Witnessed by Almarin Dillard, J. P. Joseph McLendon signed with X and witness by Wm M. Crymes James S. M. Ball, Clerk of the County Court of Webster County, Ga. April 27, 1863.

An old binder located in the Terrell County Library in Dawson, ga. Minutes of the Terrell County Camp of United Confederate Veterans, organized the first Tuesday in September, 1893 Enrollment Book. On page 60 List each member and age of Co. K 17th Ga Regiment-Lees Army Members of Pickett Company on their departure to the War, Aug 13th 1861. William A. McLendon age 18 years. Binder: Vol. 4 Part 2 ( Terrell County Library) Reminiscences of the Confederate Veterans of Terrell County, Ga. W. S. Marshall said on October 11, 1911 he enlisted at Weston, Ga., August 1861under Capt J. H. Pickett, Co. K 17th Ga. Regt. The Minutes of 'The Terrell County Camp of United Confederate Veterans, listed him as joining March 3,1862. Thomas J. McLendon brother of William A Mclendon joined March 3, 1862. William A. McLendon enlisted in Weston, Ga. on August 15, 1861 and died on May 25, 1864 of wounds on May 6, 1864 at the Wilderness. Died at the General Hospital #3 at Lynchburg, Va. Buried in Old City Cemetery.

Charles Wesley Rice, age 21, enlisted in Company K, 17th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, known as the 'Webster Confederate Guards,' in March 1862. After fighting in the battle of Sharpsburg/Antietam in September, he died in October 1862 in a Virginia field hospital. Some of the papers in his widow's pension state that he died in October 1863. He had two brothers, and they fought in Georgia infantry regiments for the entire duration of the war.
