Ryan Frier Minchew enlisted with the Satilla Rangers from Pierce County, Georgia, in 1862. The unit was sent to Virginia in that year but missed the Battle of the Seven Days. Minchew was promoted to Lieutenant and was killed at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia.

He was paroled on 13 February 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred on 13 February 1865 from Point Lookout to Boulware and Cox Landing,James River VA for exchange. Received at Boulware and Cox Landing on the 14 or 15 of February 1865. He returned home, farmed and died in Bickley Community on February 17, 1917. He is buried in Bagley Cemetery, Ware County, Georgia.

Robert Perry Rowland was born in 1831 in Charlton County, Georgia. He married Amy E Miller in 1859 in Ware County, Georgia. They had one child during their marriage. He enlisted on 12 May 1862 into the 50th GA Inf Reg Co. B. He died in a Richmond, VA Hospital on June 19, 1864, at the age of 33.

This is my GG grandfather. Killed at Crampton's Gap, September 14, 1862. I have not been able to find any further information about him. Looking for the names of his parents.

Sgt. George W. Chitty was my GG Grandfather. Chitty joined the Valdosta Guards (Co. D) in March 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, and later promoted to 1st Sgt. in February 1864. Chitty was wounded at Petersburg on June 19, 1864, and spent the remainder of the war at home on wounded furlough. He died in 1910, and is buried at Sardis Church Cemetery, Echols County, GA.

My maternal gg granduncle (b 1843). Enlisted at age 18 as a Private in the Valdosta Guards on March 4, 1862. Company was officially designated as Co D, 50th Georgia Infantry Regiment, on March 22, 1862. He contracted a disease (probably measles) while in camp near Savannah and died in a Savannah hospital on June 20, 1862. Was the younger brother of Georgia Washington Chitty.

My GGGrandfather

This soldier died in the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA 17 Dec, 1862 and was most likely buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.

According to selected Records of War Dept. Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War 1861-1865,Neil Peterson was released June 16, 1865 from a Union Prison up north. He was captured February 1865 while seeking food for his unit. Stories told by my dad told to him by his father, Neil's son, were that Neil was in camp when Stonewall Jackson died. Neil also told his children when they complained of being hungry they had no idea what it was like to be hungry. After his release, he walked barefooted to join his brother in East Texas where they both settled and died.

My GGGGrandfather left SC and enlisted as a Private on 22 March 1862 at the age of 31. Killed on 29 Nov. 1863 at the 'Seige of Knoxville' in Knoxville, TN. from gunshot wound to head.

Thomas Was 20 years old when he joined Co E 50th Georgia Infantry on 31 July 1862. Known as the 'Thomas County Rangers' in Thomas County Georgia. He was recently married. He was badly wounded in the Battle of Chancellorsville and had his left arm amputated. He was discharged 12 Jan 1864. He returned to Thomasville,Thomas County Ga. and became a productive member of his town. He died 3 May 1919.

Francis was about 27 when he enlisted at Fort Brown, Savannah, Georgia on 15 May 1862. He has 18 cards in his archival file. He was born in Thomas Co. Georgia. He endured the entire war and was wounded twice. Gunshot wound at Sharpsburg [aka] Antietam and again at Richmond, 0n 31 Oct. 1864, shot in the left shoulder. He recovered again and returned to his unit which was captured 13 April 1865. Six of his family served in this company.

Jarrett was 23 when he and several brothers joined Co E 50th Regiment Georgia Infantry. [ Thomas County Rangers]at Thomasville, Thomas County Ga. Mustered in at Camp Brown, Savannah Ga. Regiment sent north to Virginia where he and his unit were engaged in many battles. He fought at Gettysburg and was wounded. He survived Typhoid Fever. He was appointed the rank of 2nd Corporal in Feb. 1864. His unit was captured at Farmville, Virginia on 6 April 1865 and sent to City Point. He died 25 Oct. 1922

John was 20 years old when he joined with his brothers. Enlisting at Thomasville,Thomas County Georgia and mustering in at Savannah. Known as the [Thomas County Rangers] His unit was sent north to Va. He was wounded in the battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland [aka] Antietam. So severe were his wounds that he was discharged as disabled.

Nasworth was 18 years old when he joined Co E 50th Georgia Infantry on 13 August 1862 at Thomasville, Thomas county Georgia. On 1 Sept he is attached to the Hospital. He has several bouts of bad health. On 26 August he is in Bryant's Brigade. He is sick and is sent home on a 30 day furlough. He is eventually captured as he has a POW card. We do not have a death date for him and we are not sure if he made it home.

William was 22 years old when he and several of his brothers joined Co E 50th Regiment Georgia Infantry on 15 May 1862 at Savannah, Chatham Georgia. William is my Great, Great Grandfather. He was wounded on July 2, 1863 in the Wheatfield at the Battle of Gettysburg. He had his four fingers on his right hand removed and part of the hand, leaving his thumb. (After the war, he farmed the land and plowed with his mule.) He was taken as a POW and send to NY. When he was released he joined the Corp of wounded soldiers to defend his home in Bainbridge GA. He was paroled in 1865. He died in 1908 and was receiving a pension. He is buried in Bainbridge, GA.

Captured by the Union midway point of the war and was P.O.W. imprisoned at Elmira, N.Y. and released in March of 1865. Died in 1877 in Live Oak, Florida from complications of Typhoid and Pneumonia which he had in Elmira prison during the war. He was my Gr-Gr-Great Grandfather.

Stephen Edward Maloy was born in 1827 and enlisted in the 50th in March of 1862. He was captured (three days before the surrender) at Farmville, VA on April 6th 1865 during Lee's retreat to find additional supplies. Transported to and arrived at City Point, VA April 15th. Held as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, MD and released on June 29th 1865. He passed away in 1906 in his home state of Georgia. My GGGrandfather.

Isham Roberts is my GGG Grandfather. He enlisted as a Private on 22 March 1862 at the age of 24.Promoted to Full 4th Corporal (Estimated day of Promo) on 15 Feb 1864. He was captured on October 19, 1864 at the battle of Cedar Creek, and was sent to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland where he was paroled on June 17, 1865.

Quarterman B. Staten is my GG Grandfather. He joined the Clinch Volunteers (Co. G) as 1st Lt. in March 1862. He was elected Captain after the Battle of Fox's Gap, later resigned his commission due to illness, and was subsequently re-elected Captain after the Battle of Gettysburg. He served until being wounded while leading his company at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. Quarterman Staten died in 1872, and is buried at Union Church Cemetery, Lanier County, GA.

My great great grandfather....

He was wounded in the left arm which resulted in partial paralysis at Fredericksburg, Virginia. He survived the war and is buried in Sardis Primitive Baptist Church cememetery, Berlin, Ga.

He was wounded through his right shoulder at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863.

Wilson L. Alger died at home after he was granted a medical furlough. He died on 1 Sept 1863. His wife was Mary. His daughter was Mary Elizabeth Alger Flowers.

Giles gravesite was proven and as a Bryant family historian, Lorene knew how important it was to purchase and have a tombstone for the grandmother. Lorene BRYANT Epps - Purchased and paid for a gravestone for Martha A. GILES Bryant and it has been placed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery beside her husband Calvin Bryant and between both Calvin and John [Calvin's brother]. Lanette and the entire Bryant family is thankful because now all future generations will know where this grandmother was buried. Hopping John Bryant received promotion to 2nd Corporal April 1864, then he was captured at Spottsylvania, Va. 5-12-1864; where he was once again released at Point Lookout, Va. June 24, 1865. There was a period when these brothers didn't fight together. Both were hero's and fought under General Lee, of the Confederate War. The Civil War ended June 1865 - Final Surrenders among Remaining Confederates Troops. Remaining confederate Troops were defeated between the end of April and the end of May. Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia on May 10, 1865. Calvin's Confederate Records indicate: April 13, 1862 - he was sent to hospital in Macon, Ga. September 23, 1862 - he was sent to Winchester Hospital. Feb. 20, 1863 - he was sent to Richmond Hospital in Virginia. Three different Captured dates: May 6, 1864 May 7, 1864 at the Wilderness Va. Battle. and this posting of May 12, 1864 at the Battle of Spottsylvania He was sent to Point Lookout, MD prison and exchanged March 4, 1865 - just think, his brother John was captured the following month and sent to the same prison his brother had been in. The last two entries probably mean he did not surrender at Appomattox, Va - therefore, for him to be formally paroled - most of the solders who didn't surrender at Appomattox, went to Thomasville, on their own, to be officially paroled. THE CIVIL WAR WAS OVER - CALVIN BRYANT AND BROTHER JOHN [Hopping John] BRYANT lived to make it back home to Colquitt Co. Georgia. FOUND Calvin Bryant listed on 1867 -1868 Returns of Qualified Voters & Registration Oath Books, by White. 23:1 and 37:16, stored at State of Georgia Archives & History in Atlanta, Ga. In the 1902 Moultrie Observer Newspaper of Georgia; lists Calvin Bryant and John Bryant as surviving Confederate Soldiers - Veterans. 1910 Census of Autreyville District, Colquitt Co. Georgia: has Calvin Bryant and wife Martha were living by themselves. It has James W. Bryant [son] in his own home with wife and only one daughter-Mary age 2 yrs. It also has John Henry Hitch Bryant listed with his family. Wife Martha; son Frank, Daughter Ollie; Son- Ivey John Bryant; Daughter Susie; and Daughter Florence in this census. Calvin later died in the year 1915; only living thirteen years after the Civil War. He entered the Civil War when he was approximately 33 years old. Calvin died at age 83 years. Calvin Bryant was listed as 76 years old in the 1910 Census of Colquitt Co. Georgia Autreyville area; but he really was 76 years old.. His wife was listed as Martha who was 70 years old and her age was correct. It states that Calvins father was born in North Carolina. Mother born Georgia, but the census is not correct on this because in earlier census records it shows Calvin's mother born in North Carolina with Nancy herself..

James was about 25 years old, born in Thomas County Georgia. He joined on 4 March 1862 at Moultrie Colquitt Co. Ga., Capt Jeremiah W Well's Co 'Colquitt Marksman' 50th Regt. Georgia Infantry. August 1862 he is a patient in hospital in Richmond, Dx not known. He contracts 'Phthisis Pulmonmalis' and is in the hospital at Stanton, Va. He is discharged via surgeons certificate and dies between 9 & 13 Feb. 1863 His wife Sarah filed for settlement.

He was my great great great grandfather on my mother's side she was a Mercer.Saul was one of seven men that was with the 50th from they mustered in 1862 until appomattox found his name when he mustered out with a parole pass.He was wounded at Cedar Creek but returned when recovered.

Lott Townsend born in 1848. He enlisted, served, promoted to Captain of Company H Georgia 50th Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at Gettysburg. Received CSA pension ($8. month) from State of Florida in 1892, died at age of 57 in Taylor County, FL in 1898, buried there. Father of 11 children with first wife, Lamenda Lawson, who died in 1881. Married Missouri Bland with whom he had 5 children.

He fought from 1862 through 1865 in some 40+ engagements with his 2 brothers. Here is a summary for my grandfather and his 2 brothers - Griner, Martin J.- private March 4, 1862. Pension records show he was furloughed for 24 days, account of jaundice, February 1865. Unable to return. (Born in Ga. Died at Nashville, Ga. August 12, 1914.) Griner, Thomas J.- private March 4, 1862. Discharged, disability, June 3,1862. Griner, William W.- private March 4, 1862. Appointed drummer October 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox, Va. April 9,1865. (Born in Lowndes County, Ga. October 5, 1841. Died in Berrien County, Ga. June 21, 1915.) One of their most famous battle was at Antietam where the 50th Georgia Infantry at Sharpsburg defended what was to become known as 'Burnside's Bridge'on September 12th, 1862. One of two Georgia regiments assigned to hold the bridge and defend Lee's flank, they held up the Union army for the duration of the bloody battle being fought in the Miller's Cornfield and the Sunken Road, and sealed the fate of General McClellan's 'splendidly fought' battle which ended in a stalemate! The Commanding General of the Army of the Potomac was finally removed from command following this battle when Lincoln determined McClellan had not used all his soldiers in the attack despite having captured Lee's battle orders earlier in the week! The 50th Georgia did eventually withdraw after holding back Burnside's entire Division most of the day, but their stand saved the Confederate Army Of Northern Virginia until A.P. Hill arrived with reinforcements from Harpers Ferry. I have been to the bridge and it should be noted that some 1200 Confederates held off an Army of that outmanned them by at least 10 to 1. At Gettysburg they fought from the hills into the Wheatfield. Charge after charge by the Northern brigades went against them in the wheatfield and each time they beat back the Northern armies. As far as I know, this is the only part of the battle that was won by the South during Gettysburg. I have been there and they were very smart to charge from the fields and retreat back to the hill behind rocks where they could mount counter attacks. In any case, the bravery it took to charge into that field was incredible. My grandfather passed down several stories to me directly from his father including how they lived off a daily ration of dried corn that would only fill the middle of their palm. He also related the story when Stonewall Jackson was killed at Chancellorsville and how his father could hear all the men sobbing throughout the woods at night as the news was announced to the units encamped around there.

Francis Boyett and his brother William were in the 50th and were buried in the Hollywood CSA Cemetery in Richmond Virginia along with their father, John Ashley Boyett of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment. He was held in the Lighthouse Point Union Prison Camp in Maryland until exchanged at Cox's Landing and hospitalized in the Jackson CSA Hospital in Richmond where he died and was buried in the nearby Hollywood Cemetery...

William Boyett and his brother Francis were in the 50th and were buried in the Hollywood CSA Cemetery in Richmond Virginia along with their father, John Ashley Boyett of the 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment. He was held in the Lighthouse Point Union Prison Camp in Maryland until exchanged at Cox's Landing and hospitalized in the Jackson CSA Hospital in Richmond where he died and was buried in the nearby Hollywood Cemetery... Jacob was born in South Carolina and migrated to Georgia. He married and divorced my 2nd cousin 4x removed. Rhoda Ann Jane Gandy. He moved to Colquitt Co.Georgia where on 22 March 1862 he joined Co H 50th Regiment Georgia Infantry the [Colquitt Sharpshooters] He was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville,and died of his wounds at Richmond 27 July 1864. He is buried along with some 18,000 of his compatriots at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond Virginia. Deo Vindice
