Thomas J. Fenn died September 1, 1864, in the Rock Hospital, Upson County, Georgia, of pneumonia contracted in the trenches around Atlanta. He was buried as one of twelve unknowns in a nearby cemetery.

J.W. Haley enlisted with Co.'B', 1st Regiment, GSL, on February 9, 1863 at Carnesville, Ga. He was enrolled by John H. Patrick, who was Captain of Co.'B'. The time period for which he enrolled was 'For the War, unless sooner disbanded'. On the May31, 1863 muster roll he is listed as 'Absent on sick furlough'. He was eligible for two months pay, but I'm not sure if he was actually paid the money in hand since he was on sick furlough. The pay for GSL soldiers was $11/month, so he was supposed to get $22 (from Mar 31 to May 31) [This means he was probably with the regiment in Savannah]. He's listed on the July 31, 1863 muster roll as 'Absent without Leave'. He received no pay from May31-July31. (So, it is my guess that he died within this two-month period, and word hadn't yet been received by his Captain) While on sick furlough, J.W. Haley could have been at home, or he may have been at the GSL hospital in Cartersville, Ga. (Camp Foster).

Martin Luther Jones was from Dahlonega Georgia. He was elected 3rd Lt at the formation of the Regiment. It trained at Camp McDonald in present-day Kennesaw, Georgia. I have researched him and believe that he may have been captured sometime during the Battle of Atlanta, when the Ist GaSL was deployed somewhere in the southwest of the city. I believe he may have escaped. He possibly suffered from 'shell shock' for a brief time. He survived the war and returned to Dahlonega and lived a productive life. I am very interested in corresponding with anyone whose relative served in 'D' Company, the Blue Ridge Rangers.

William Asbery Wade was born 19 JUN 1842 in Auraria Lumpkin Co., Ga. and died in 1864 during Sherman's Seige of Atlanta Atlanta, Ga. During the Civil War he was in Company D 1st Regiment Georgia State Troops, Lumpkin County, Georgia 'Blue Ridge Rangers.' He was the son of Joseph Berry Wade (1815-1877) and Sarah Medely Odell Wade (1822-1908) and spent he entire life before the war in the Auraria area where he panned for gold with his family when his father wasn't working for one of the gold mines. Enlisted 12 Jul 1863 at Calhoun, GA in 1st GA State Guard.

Francis Franklin Gann (my GG grandfather), was born in Clarke County, GA on 10 August 1834, the first child of state senator John Gann and his second wife Mary Ann. Francis Franklin, as well as a brother and half brother, served in Company E (Cobb/Fulton County 'State Rights Guards'), 1st Regiment, Georgia State Line. The unit was attached to Stovall's brigade during the Atlanta campaign. Francis Franklin was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864. The wound was a shot in the hip, with the ball so embedded the surgeons, under battlefield conditions, were unable to extract it. The ball remained in his hip for 12 years and was taken out in 1876. According to records, the unit attacked the enemy works at the Troup Hurt House. Captured DeGress's Battery (1st Illinois Light Artillery, Battery H), which had been 'playing havoc' in the Confederate lines. 1st Regiment suffered 92 casualties.

Henry Thomas (my 2nd great-grand uncle), was born to state Senator John Gann and his first wife, Sarah, in March of 1830. By family tradition he got the nickname 'Rattler' because like a rattlesnake he was ready to strike and fight at the slightest provocation. He joined Company E along with his half brothers Francis Franklin and Nathan Thornton. Like his brother F.F., Henry was wounded during the Battle of Atlanta.

The sixth child of John and Mary Gann, Nathan was born in August of 1846. He joined Company E along with his older brother Francis Franklin and half brother Henry Thomas.

James L. Martin, listed as J.L. Martin on the muster rolls, was my GGGGrandfather. He lived in Milton County, Ga at the time of his enlistment. He enlisted in Co. A August 2, 1862, but was transferred to Co. E on February 1, 1863. According to his pension application, he was captured and held at Camp Chase Ohio, and was exchanged sometime before the end of the war, however I have been unable to verify where he was captured. He also stated that he was at home at the time of the surrender, and had not had time to rejoin his unit after he had been exchanged. He moved to Upshur County Texas in 1869, which is now Camp County. He applied for his pension about 1910, but was denied due to lack of documentation of the unit within the records of the Confederate War Department. He died in Camp County Texas in 1922, and is buried in Leesburg Cemetery in Camp County.

Benjamin Hudson Watson, served for about twenty-two months, until Lee surrendered and the war ended on April 9, 1865. Brother of Elias Watson BHW born 1823 to Sanders and Hannah Watson of Franklin County, Ga. Married Elisabeth Caudle December 12,1848 in Franklin County Ga. Children Benjamin S. Watson, James David Watson in Banks County, Ga. Died about 1900 in Anderson County, SC

Elias served for about twenty-two months, until Lee surrendered and the war ended on April 9, 1865. Brother of Benjamin Hudson Watson EW Born March 06, 1837 in Franklin County, Georgia, and died June 26, 1907 in Pruitt Community, Banks County, Georgia. He married DICEY LEWALLEN December 11, 1858 in Banks County Georgia, According to his statement: 'My command disbanded at Pirate Creek near Savannah, Ga. when the war closed in April 1865. The First Georgia State Troop regiment was attached to Stovalls Brigade at New Hope Church, Ga. I did service from there to Savannah, Ga. along the line that Sherman traviled. I received a sick furlough near Augusta, Ga. on the 10 day of Febuary 1865 for 60 days. I left my command the 10 Feb 1865.' (The spelling is as found and there's no indication as to why he got a sick furlough.)

Served in the' Chattahoochee Rangers' 02/21/1863 to 07/05/1865. He is buried in Yellow Creek Bap.Church Cemetery,Murryville,Ga.
