6th Illinois Cavalry

Major Herod was born in 1818 in Alexandria, Tennessee. During his time in the service, Major Herod was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing his superior officer, Lieutenant Colonel Reuben Loomis. After the war, in 1866, President Andrew Johnson granted him a pardon.

John died 5-11-1864 of smallpox in Memphis TN. He is buried in the Memphis National Cemetery. He was married to Mary J. Large in Jefferson Co., IN, the family moved to Massac Co. IL. He had 4 children, Henry b. 1853, Willis b. 1856, Alice b. 1858 and William b. 1862.

David Jennings was the son of Joshua and Eliza Louisa Jane Nelson Jennings. He was born in Greene County, Tennessee. When he was a boy, his family moved to Caldwell County, Kentucky, around 1848. They lived near Fredonia, on Good Springs Road. Around 1858, he married Mary Campbell, and they had two children (Victoria and Sarah). They moved to Hamilton County, Illinois, around 1860. (His parents and his siblings would later follow.) On October 13, 1861, he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He played the bugle in the military band. His wife, Mary, later became sick, and she died around 1871. He got remarried to a woman whose first name was Elizabeth, around 1872, and they had six children (James William, David Rufus, Mary Louise, Elijah, Edward, and Elizabeth, who was known as 'Bessie'). David's second wife Elizabeth died, either during the birth of their daughter Bessie, in Dec of 1884, or soon thereafter. David moved to Ripley County, Missouri, around 1902. He married for a third time, to Alice Ellen Timmons Harris. She was also a widow, and she brought her four children to the marriage (James, Berthal, Roscoe, and Mary). David and Alice had two children of their own (Ruth and Albert).
