45th Illinois Infantry

Demus served during the Battle of Shiloh. His wife died in Jan 1862. He enlisted with his son at age 55 and was promoted first to 2nd Lt. then to 1st Lt. He resigned his commission prior to Vicksburg returned to farming life in Winnebago, IL., only to accept an appointment to serve in the ILL. 146th Infantry where he served in a prisoner of war camp til the end of the War in 1865.

Appointed Surgeon after resigning from the 18th Infantry on June 23, 1863.

Enlisted as a Private on 17 September 1861. Mustered in Company G, 45th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 20 November 1861. Mustered out on 12 July 1865 at Louisville, KY.

Samuel Vanston enlisted in the 45th Illinois Infantry, Co. G on November 17, 1861. He was discharged for disability on May 1, 1864. On August 29, 1864, Samuel reenlisted at Rockford, Illinois in the 146th Illinois Infantry, Co., B. He served with this regiment until July 8, 1865 when he mustered out at Springfield, Illinois.

Enlisted Sept.23,1861 at Buffalo Prairie,Illinois and discharged Dec. 23, 1864. He was born in Pennsylvania and died in Iowa.

Helped start the Company, was appointed First Sergeant, later promoted to Lieutenant and lastly to Captain. Was later a Colonel with the post war Illinois National Guard. Sometimes there is an error and his middle initial is changed to B. Robert Reid was his brother.

Wounded at Medon Station Tn Aug 31, 1862 Spent 10 months at Jefferson Baracks in St. Louis recuperating from head wound. Mustered out May 1863. Died in a blizzard in 1893 and buried in Colbert Cemetary near Geneseo Il.

Mortally wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. Survived two weeks after the initial engagement, but died from his wounds on 4/19/1862 at St. Louis, Missouri. Nicholas was born about 1840 in N.Y., and is the brother of my husband's great-great grandmother, Henrietta Shaw Skinner.
