Oldest son of Alfred Squire Miller and Jane Copeland Miller of Wilkes, (later Watauga) County, North Carolina, born about 1827 in Deep Gap N.C. He was enlisted for a period of 3 YRS by CPT CARPENTER on 8/15/1862 at MCLEANSBORO, IL. as a Musician. On 9/22/1862 he mustered at SHAWNEETOWN, IL into 'E' Co. IL 87th Infantry. 35 years old, 5'9 1/2', Hair BLACK, Eyes BLACK, Complexion DARK, Married, A Farmer, his residence at Union County, KY. DISCHARGED OCT 9, 1863 FOR DISABILITY.
During September and October, 1863, the 87th was engaged in the movements along the Atchafalaya river and Bayou Teche, being in the affairs at Grand Coteau and Vermillionville, La. Alpheus may have been wounded or taken ill.
Alpheus died Burns City, Cooke County, Texas in 1901.

My parents moved from White County, Illinois, to Mississippi around 1930. I've learned that William Hoskins, my great-grand uncle, served at the Siege of Vicksburg! Next time I am there, I need to visit the Illinois Memorial and find his name!

Interested in any and all info about this regiment--my great-grandfather had earlier served in the 40th Illinois and mustered into the 87th at Shawneetown in the Fall of '62.

'Cousin' John enlisted at age 26 from Carmi, White Co., Ill and served throughout the war. He was born in Hardin Co., KY in about 1836 and was married in 1857 in Illinois, prior to the outbreak. The 87th spent much time in Louisiana, where forage and supplies were often scarce. It is said of the 87th what while there, they 'rode everything but steers.' Interestingly, one source says that during that time, they were the 'best mounted' of all Yankee troops in the region. Several other Cozarts/Cozads/Cozards (and other variants) enlisted from White Co., Ill.
