Resigned post as Alderman of the 8th Ward, Chicago to organize the 90th. Captured at Holly Springs and later exchanged. General Sherman gave him a team of white horses after the war as a token of thanks. He was one of the guard of honor for Pres. Lincoln when he lay in state in Chicago.

James Everard was my wife's great grandfather. He was with the 90th Illinois, Co. B for most of its service. He is listed with the regiment in the Illinois Memorial at Vicksburg. He marched in the grand parade at war's end. Later he served in the regular infantry in the Dakota Terr., until 1868. He raised his family in Kansas City, Kan., and is buried there.

Alexander was my great-great grandfather on my mothers side. He was wounded twice at Missionary Ridge and once at Ft. McAlister Alabama and suffered a hernia during Shermans march to the sea. Took part in the grand parade in Washington and was finally discharged at Camp Butler Illinois near Springfield.
