114th Illinois Infantry

He and his brother, Simon, mustered in on September 18, 1862. They were both taken prisoner at the seige of Vicksburg and survived prison at Andersonville. August's life was saved in Andersonville because maggots ate the diseased flesh from his wounds. He was mustered out on August 3, 1865.

Stories he told his grand-daughter (my great-aunt) include how there was so little drinking water at Andersonville that the prisoners prayed constantly for rain. One day an underground spring burst forth to supply the thirsy men with clean water. All claimed it was divine providence. Simon and August have their names engraved inside the Illnois monument at Vicksburg Military Park in Mississippi.

Frederick was born in Germany, was a wagonmaker and enlisted at 19 in Menard Co. He lived in Pleasant Plains Illinois.

Job Allen was my Great-Great Grandfather. He died at Oak Neb. Job Allen was captured at Brice's crossroad and spent one year at Andersonville prison.
