Enlisted as a Quartermaster Sergeant on 22 August 1861. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 21 December 1863. Discharged on 15 May 1865.

Andrew is my great great grandfather and one of his daughters is my great grandmother who married my great grandfather Edward Wingerter in 1898. Andrew died in January 1916 at age 73 and is buried in Marco, Greene County,Indiana. He married the daughter of my great great great grandfather Daniel Plew who also served in C troop 3rd Indiana Cavalry. Andrew married America Detta Plew in may 1875 in Indiana.

Hugh was a cousin of my great great grandfather Andrew Jackson Courtney and both served in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry Regiment (Right Wing) with the Army of The Potomac. Hugh was present at Gettysburg July 1-3 1863.

Charles and brothers John and Silas all from Switzerland County, Indiana, served in various Indiana unit during the War. Charles and John mustered in on August 22, 1861. Charles acted as a calvary scout in early 1862 in Maryland. While scouting there he was caught in a snowstorm and became seriously ill. He was discharged due to this medical illness on April 20, 1862. He re-enlisted in the 115th Infantry, Company E from July 30, 1863 to February 25, 1864. He died on May 5, 1864 due to a pulmonary disease (consumption or pneumonia). He is buried next to his brother John in Eugene Cemetery, Eugene, Vermillion County, Indiana.

John of Switzerland County, Indiana, mustered in on August 22, 1861 at Madison, Indiana with his brother, Charles W. Irby. John was wounded at Brandy Station VA on Aug. 4, 1863. He lost half of his left hand & three fingers. He also was detached as a Union Army Scout from March to June 1964 working out of Army Headquarters at Brandy Station VA. He mustered out in August 1864 in Indianapolis, Indiana. John and his brothers Charles W. Irby (1834-1864) and Silas Wilson Irby (1838-1920) served in various Indiana units during the Civil War.

Abraham was a cousin to my great great great grandfather who served in the same unit as Abraham which was the 3rd Indiana Cavalry.

Daniel is my great great great grandfather from my paternal side of the family. He was born in Ohio in 1835 and was married to Serena Lester. He survived the war fighting in the Eastern campaigns with The Army Of The Potomac. Prior to the war he was a River Boat Captain on the Ohio River. His daughter America Detta Plew married Andrew Courtney in May 1875. Andrew was a member of C Troop 3rd Indiana Cavalry and served alongside Daniel. So I had a great great great grandfather and a great great grandfather in the same unit.

Silas Rosin Hubbard was born in 1841 in Dearborn County, Indiana. He was the brother of my Grandfather, John Nelson Hubbard who served in Company A, 7th Indiana Infantry. Silas joined Company D, 3rd Indiana Cavalry on 22 August 1861. They both fought together in the Army of the Potomac. Both survived the War. Silas later moved to St. Francis, AR and Grandfather moved to Grayson, KY. He died 19 September 1927.

Jesse Smith was born in Dearborn County, Indiana and was a cousin of my Grandfather, John Nelson Hubbard, Company A, 7th Indiana Infantry. Jesse joined Company D, 3rd Indiana Cavalry on 8 February 1862. They both served together in the Army of the Potomac. Jesse was one of the first soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, by a shrapnel shell about 1 1/2 miles west of Gettysburg on 1 July 1863. Two comrades took his body to Gettysburg, where he was delivered to Mr. Swope's cabinet shop. Mr. Swope promised to make a casket and to bury and mark Jesse's grave, so that it could be found if desirable. Jesse is buried in Grave #10, Section D, Gettysburg National Cemetery.

I have a good amount of information about my gg grandfather Bowman H. Younker, sometimes his surname was spelled Jounker, or even Younger. But on his tombstone it's spelled Younker. The name is English Origin and an uncommon one at that. Anyway, I came across this website and just had to play along. I'm looking for every scrap of info about Bowman, I want to know if he carried a sharps carbine if that's possible. I have his pension and most records from the NA on a trip to DC a few years ago, and a hefty amount if work on ancestry.com; if you'd like some information from me. Any good books or articles about this company D or any insight would be appreciated. Thanks for your time. Sean

My G.G. Grandfather, ANDREW FIFE was born in Louisville, Ky., August 29, 1841, the son of John and Elizabeth (Wright) Fife. When the war broke out he entered the service of the Government, and first was employed as a teamster. After following this branch of the service nearly a year, he returned home and enlisted in the 49th Regiment (3d Indiana Cavalry), Co. M, March 25,1863. He with the rest of his company was transferred to Company F, 8th Indiana Cavalry, April 1, 1865. Among the engagements he was in were: Greenville, TN., Chickamauga TN, Macon, GA., Marietta GA, Louisville, GA., Savannah GA, and Goldsboro, NC. He went with Sherman in his 'March to the Sea;' and was one of Sherman's escorts at the surrender of General Joe Johnston at Bennett Place, near Durham N.C He was discharged July 25, 1865, at the expiration of his term of service. Andrew died Feb.3, 1928, and is buried at Highlander Community Church, Galena Indiana.

Charles Henry Williar was born in 1833 in Indiana, the son of Nathan Williar & Sarah Kinser. Enlisted in Company M, 3rd US Indiana Calvary on 11 Dec 1862 in Boone Township, Harrison County. Company M served in the following locations: Indianapolis, Indiana, December 11, 1862. Camp Carrington, December 31, 1862-April 30, 1863 Indianapolis, May-June 1863. Camp Morton, Indiana, August 31, 1863. Greeneville, East Tennessee, September-October 1863. Maynardsville, Tennessee, November-December 1863 Knoxville, Tennessee, January-February 1864 Chattanooga, Tennessee, March-April 1864 Adairsville, Georgia, May-June 1864 Camp Cook, Georgia, July-August 1864 Marietta, Georgia, September-October 1864 Savannah, Georgia, November-December 1864 Goldsborough, North Carolina, April 15, 1865 Mustered out April 15, 1865. Charles died 2 Feb 1915 in Boone, Indiana. He is buried in the Reheboth Cemetery in Laconia, Indiana. My family descends from his daughter Althea Louella Williar (1879-1946).
