5th Iowa Infantry

Hayden Reynolds was my grand uncle by marriage. He enlisted in Co. B of the 5th Iowa Infantry in June 1861. He saw some hard service, having been in the battle of Iuka, in which his company lost very heavily, in fact, more than half of it was killed or missing. He witnessed the bombardment of New Madrid, Missouri, and was in the hard-fought battle of Corinth. At Memphis he was accidentally wounded and was laid up in the hospital for some time. On September 7, 1863, he was given an honorable discharge and sent home on account of disability, after a faithful service of twenty-six months.

native of Russel County, Virginia. Enlisted as 1st Corporal. Reported promoted 5th Sergeant to date from May 16th, 1863 for gallantry in the Battle of Champion's Hill. Voluntarily transferred as Private to Co. I 5th Iowa Cavalry when his regiment mustered out. Record shows that the reenlisted men departed September 18th, 1864 to join the 5th Cavalry. It was with the 5th Cavalry that he ended the war.

Wounded Iuka, MS then detailed to the Signal Corps until discharged 1864.

He was captured at Missionary Ridge, TN and sent to Andersonville Prison where he died on 25 Nov 1864. He is buried in Grave No. 8062.

Enlisted in July 1861, Fought at Iuka, Shiloh and Vicksburg. He was captured at Missionary Ridge, sent to Andersonville where he survived and was transfered to several other prisons before escaping from one of them. Married and moved west in 1887. Died in Kelso, WA in 1924. His ashes along with his wife's were discovered in a storage area of a Portland crematorium in 2012 after which he was given a formal burial at Willamette National Cemetery. I am not a relative, but thought Mr Knapp should be honored on this site.

enlisted 24 June 1861 (age 18) mustered out 30 July 1864 at Chattanooga, TN. wounded in left ankle at Battle of Iuka (MS). Pension was $2.06 month.

Jasper also served in Company I. He served with the 5th Iowa Cavalry Compay I when after 5th Iowa Infantry and Cavalry consolidated.

Died in 1864 as POW at Andersonville, Georgia

Prisoner at Andersonville GA. Residence York, nativity Indiana, from Delaware County Iowa. Mustered July 15, 1861. Missing in action; taken prisoner Nov. 25, 1863, Chattanooga TN. Died July 21, 1864 Age 19. Grave # 3,705. Also listed as Jacob M. Field.

Killed in the battle of Iuka TN, 19 Sept 1862.

Charles Fosdick was my g.g.grandfather. Captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, specifically at Tunnel Hill, in Sherman''s forces, as a member of the color guard. At capture, was bayonetted through the belt and clothing. Was taken first to Belle Isle prison, then Andersonville, where he was as I understand, in with the first detachements in and one of the last out, when they were moved to Florence. He wrote a book of his experiences as a POW, ''500 Days In Rebel Prisons'' Lived to 1913.
