James Walton served on the Union side in the 10th Infantry Regiment from Iowa during the Civil War for more than three years. He enlisted on July 31, 1861 and was described as “. . . twenty-three years of age, five feet seven and one-half inches high, light completion (sic) blue eyes, brown hair, and by occupation when enrolled a farmer.” He was stationed at Camp Washborn, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, leaving on December 9, 1861, traveling to the battlefields in the south. In November and December 1861, he contracted measles and also was taken sick with pneumonia while stationed in Mound City, Missouri. December, 1862 he contracted typhoid fever and in April, 1863, his father, William, traveled to Helena, Arkansas, to see him. Since he was improved he could not be discharged from the army and soon thereafter, rejoined the battle. On May 16, 1863, he was wounded in the face, apparently near the eye, during a battle at Champion Hills, Mississippi. He was in the Champion Hills hospital in May, June, July and August 1863 where he was taken prisoner and then paroled. In September through December he was in St Louis, Missouri where he was a Commissary Guard at Division Headquarters and remained in that position until April 30, 1864. However, in January and February 1864 he was absent from service. He was mustered out on September 28, 1864 at Kingston, Georgia. He was then taken to the hospital at nearby Ringston, Georgia with his third bout of pneumonia. The 10th Iowa Infantry Regiment during their three year journey travelled more than 8,500 miles, on foot, and fought in Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, and Tennessee. They participated in many famous battles including the Battle of Vicksburg. During this entire journey James was captured twice and “paroled” which was a form of prisoner exchange. Once a soldier had been paroled he was allowed to pass freely back to his home. Once home, he could rejoin the battle and his old military unit.

Mustered in 7 Sep 1861, promoted to Sergeant Major. 14 Jul 1862 promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. 9 Feb 1863 promoted to 1st Lieutenant. 8 Nov 1864 promoted to Captain. 7 Aug 1865 promoted to Major. 15 Aug 1865 mustered out.

Henry Marks served Iowa 10th Infantry, Company G. Also serving with Henry was 2 brothers...William and Robert Marks. Robert was killed and Henry was wounded in the Battle of Champion Hills.

b:3-30-1841 Mexico, Oxford Co., Maine d:5-22-1894 Newton Hubbard W. Bunker was born at Mexico, Maine, June 30, 1841. While he was yet a small child hes parents moved to Ohio and in 1848 to Illinois. In 1860 he went to Iowa and in 1861 enlisted in Company h, 10th Iowa volunteers. As first lieutenant he was with his company in all battles and campaigns, the chief ones being Iuka, Vicksburg, Champion Hill and Mission Ridge. He received several promotions and was wounded in the right arm while in command of his company at Mission Ridge. His injury was severe, necessitating the removal of a portion of the bone of his arm above the elbow, which unfitted him for field service, even after his recovery. But he served on a detachment in court martial until he was mustered out in 1864. He came to Kansas in 1870, locating in Harvey county. Afterwards he went to Sedgwick county and later returned to Harvey and has been a resident of Newton since 1871. When the county was organized he was appointed treasurer and was afterwards elected for two terms. November 28, 1876, he was married to Mrs. Howard, who survives him. Harvey Co., Kansas
