Enlisted as a Ordinance Sergeant Promoted to Full Aide de Camp (On Staff of Gen. Helm) Killed Company S, 1st Cavalry Regiment Kentucky on 05 August 1862 in Baton Rouge, LA

My Great Great Grandfather, Nathaniel Cook enlisted in Company A Kentucky 1st Cavalry on 20 October 1861 at Prestonburg, Ky.. He died on 10 Jan 1862 after being mortally wounded at Battle of Middle Creek, Ky. He is buried at Joseph Gearheart Cemetery Floyd County, Ky.

Enlisted in Co. A of 1st (Helm's) in June, 1861. Escaped Ft. Donelson with N.B. Forrest; discharged in July '62. Re-enlisted in 1KY (Woodward's) but did not ship with Woodward's 2nd KY. Remained in TN, named Captain of Woodward's Scouts in late 1862. Scouted for Morgan until surrender in Ohio. Hiter then continued to command a unit of 'Independent Scouts' (guerillas) until 1865. Surrendered as PVT, Co. 'A', 1KY CAV.

In 1860 he resided in Brandenburg, Meade County, KY with his wife Mary at age 29. He was a butcher. Sarah Campbell age 29, lived with them. He had real estate valued at $2400, which was above average for the area. Although he lived on the Ohio River, when his son was only 2 years old, he left Breckenridge County and served in Co. 'A', 13th Battalion of the First Confederate Kentucky Cavalry in the Civil War. The Unit was organized in 1861 by Col. Helms at Bowling Green, KY. It was nicknamed the 'Orphan Brigade' because once it was formed it rarely if ever returned to it's home state. The unit participated in the Battle of Perryville and other operations in the Tennessee area. After his discharge from the Army, James was arrested as a Confederate and was confined at Camp Chase, Columbus, OH, a Federal Prison Camp. He was paroled after a few months and returned home to Breckenridge County, KY. He was a butcher and a traveling lightning rod salesman. James received a pension for his military service. He owned land in Oklahoma but it didn't produce and he sold out at a very low price dependent on whether the buyer could make a go of farming- he couldn't and James never received any further money.

A cousin, Pvt. William H.W. Cummins (1841-1931) enlisted in Wilcox's Co. G, 1st KY. Cav. in Oct. 1861. Later served in 5th KY. Cavalry and Morgan's Men. From Lyon Co, KY. Surrendered and paroled at Abbeville, S.C. in May, 1865. Commanded Jim Pearce Camp 527, United Confederate Veterans in 1919.

A cousin, Pvt. Jasper Oliver (1843-1905) was from Lyon Co, KY. Enlisted in Wilcox's Co. G in Oct. 1861 at Hopkinsville, KY. Escaped capture with Col. Nathan Bedford Forrest at surrender of Ft. Donelson, TN. in Feb. 1862.

A cousin, Pvt. Thomas Oliver was from Lyon Co, KY. Enlisted in Wilcox's Co. G in Oct. 1861 at Hopkinsville, KY. Later reenlisted in Jan. 1863 in Cobb's 1st KY. Light Artillery at Tullahoma, Ala. Died in hospital at Atlanta, Ga. on 28 Nov, 1863.

Pvt. John H.C. Rogers enlisted in Wilcox's Co. G, 1st KY. Cavalry in Oct. 1861. Later served under Gen. John H. Morgan's cavalry command until capture at Mt. Stirling, Ky. in Oct. 1864. Imprisoned at Rock Island, Ill. until he volunteered to Union Army for frontier service against Indians in Nebraska territory. From Lyon Co, KY.
