10th Kentucky Partisan Rangers

First enlisted on 9/13/1862 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Was enlisted by Captain Fields. Promoted to 1st Lt. on 11/30/1862. Captured on 10/16/1863 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. Received at Louisville, Kentucky military prison as a prisoner-of-war for 5 days, then sent to Johnson Island in Sandusky, Ohio as prisoner-of-war until 5/16/1865.

One of the Six officers that escape with Gen.Morgan . Wounded 26 times and had 11 horses shot out from under him.

A cousin, Charles Howard (1832-1905) was from Christian Co, KY. Enlisted on 29 June,1862 at Union Co, KY.

Thomas was Captain of Company D of the 10th Regiment Kentucky Calvary of Johnsons. He enlisted July 20, 1862. He was a prison of war from being captured at Rutland, OH on July 20, 1863. I believe he was a prisoner at the Ohio Penitentiary and Point Lookout. He was released June 12, 1865.

A 4th great-uncle, John Rowan Thompson (1839-1898) was from Union Co, KY. Was commissioned 2nd. Lt. of Co. D in July, 1862 at Union Co.

A 4th great-uncle, Pvt. Thomas Girten was from Union Co, KY. Enlisted in Johnson's 10th KY. Partisan Rangers Aug. 1862 in Union Co. Brother of Pvt. Valentine Girten, same company. Was captured at Liberty,TN. in Feb. 1863. Exchanged in May 1863 in Maryland.

A 4th great-uncle, Pvt. Valentine Girten (1839-1890) was from Union Co, KY. Enlisted Sept. 1862 in Union Co. Brother to Thomas Girten, same company. Captured in May 1863 at Henderson, KY. Exchanged May 1863 in Maryland. Captured or deserted near Chattanooga, TN. in Sept. 1863, sent to Camp Morton, IN. Remained POW until release at war's end in March 1865. His widow received Confederate service pension from KY. in 1914.

A cousin, Pvt. Leonard Mattingly (1845-1931) was from Union Co,KY. Enlisted Aug. 1862 in Union Co. Reported deserted or captured in Dec. 1863.

a 3rd great-grand uncle, Pvt. Willis French (1845-1921) was from Union County, KY. He enlisted in Johnson's 10th KY. Cavalry in Aug. 1862 at Henderson County, KY. His brothers Leo and Henry also served in the same company.

A 3rd great-grand uncle, Pvt. Henry French (1843-1913) was from Union County, KY. He enlisted in Johnson's 10th KY. Cavalry in Aug. 1862 at Henderson County, KY. His brothers Leo and Willis also served in the same company.

A 3rd great-grand uncle, Pvt. Leo French (1833-1908) was from Union County, KY. He enlisted in Johnson's 10th KY. Cavalry in Sept. 1862 at Henderson County, KY. His brothers Willis and Henry also served in the same company.

N.B. Dupuy was originally from Hancock County, Kentucky (Utility community). Enlisted in the Kentucky CSA Army in Daviess County on Sept. 5, 1862. Served under the command of Captain Henry Clay Meriwether. Died in April 1863 near the Kentucky line near Celina, Tennessee. Buried in an unmarked grave. The farmer sent NB Dupuy's wedding ring back to his wife (Eusebia Ellis Dupuy) in Hancock County.

This is my gg grandfather, who served with the 10th Johnson's KY Cavalry. His papers say that he enlisted Sept 1862, near Hawesville, KY (he was from Hancock Co). He served with Adam R.Johnson (10th)and HC Merriweather (I believe he was listed as F. Hayden with the 4th KY Mounted INF). He has a govt grave marker in Rockport IN. My 3rd Great Grandfather: brother of Doctor Willis W. Johnson. Served in William J. Field’s Company of Kentucky Partisan Rangers (1862-63). Was captured during a raid near Grayson, KY, on 5/11/1863. Was sent to several prisons, the last one being Point Lookout, MD. He was released on taking the Oath on 1/10/1864.
