3rd Kentucky Cavalry

The FULTON COUNTY HISTORY says he served in the 3rd Kentucky Regiment, CSA. He's listed as 1st Sergeant in Company G, 8th Missouri Cavalry, CSA. Joined 9/27/1862 in Cape Girardeau Co, MO, appointed First Sergeant 10/8/1862. He deserted (!) 8/18/1863, along with numerous other members of his company, apparently because they were dismounted and being transferred to the infantry. So he apparently returned to KY to join up there. I can't understand why he went to Missouri initially, and can't find him on the Kentucky roster.

Joined the 1st Ky. Cavalry intil it disbanded then joined the 3d Ky. Cavalry. He received a 'Distinguished Service Award'. After the war he moved to Huntsville, Arkansas.He returned to Ky. and is buried at Lancaster Cemetery with these markings on his tombstone: James Clayton McQuerry Born in Estill County, Kentucky A Mister of the Gospel 3rd Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A.

William was captured and sent from Camp Morton , Ind. to Camp Douglas, Ill. He died there of Small Pox in 1864. He received an ' Distinguished Service award '. He was 18 yrs old.
