6th Kentucky Infantry

A brief history of Capt. John D. McGrath is found in 'The Boys Who Feared No Noise'. There is an existent picture of him within a picture that also featured his four brothers. He became a Capt. posthumously. He probably died in the field hospital after multiple wounds.

Benjamin Franklin Black was born in 1840 near Visalia, Kenton County, Kentucky. He was the son of Elmore Black and Rosannah Abercrombie. His grandfather, William Abercrombie was killed in the War of 1812 at the Siege of Ft. Meigs, Ohio. Benjamin enlisted in the 6th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry in 1861. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, TN. on April 7, 1862. He was shot in the right knee at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 19, 1863, later moved to Army Hospital #12, Nashville, TN. and died there on October 13, 1863 from shock and loss of blood after his right leg was amputated. He was buried at the Nashville National Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee. Benjamin had two brothers that also fought in the Civil War on the side of the Union. They both survived the war. They were: Pvt. Samuel G. Black, Company B, 53rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry and Sgt. William H. Black, Company E, 82nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

Captured at Chicmauga. Interred for a time at Andersonville.

Died December 31, 1862 at Battle of Stones River.

I have bible that he carried during war and story that my mother told me - he was wounded and was afraid that they would amputate his leg so he was smuggled out of hospital to home in Louisville where he recovered - went on th NYC and fathered two children. Someone smuggled him out of the hospital - there was another captain listed as desterter - Mathew Muller - his wife was Maria Mueller and Mathew might have been his brother in law - John's last name was Uebelhoer but was badly misspelled.

Born in Germany and resided in Louisville, Ky. Wounded 12/31/1862 at Battle of Stones River. Died at Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio.

Enlisted in Company H, 6th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 24 December 1861. Died Company H, 6th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 16 July 1863 in Manchester, TN. He was the brother of Moses McGrew, who also served in the 6th Kentucky.

Enlisted in Company H, 6th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 24 December 1861. Wounded on 23 June 1864 at Kenesaw Mountain, GA and died on 12 July 1864 in Chattanooga, TN.
