Moses joined Co A on Dec. 30, 1863 in Paintsville, KY. He remained until the end of the war. He was AWOL the entire month of August 1864 and according to the 'Muster Out Roll' he was 'tried by field court and sentenced 10 days work on fortifications'. He returned to SW Virginia after the war. He is my great great grandfather.

Thomas M. Musick joined the Union Army as a Pvt. in Co., A, 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Union). He was married to a daughter of Jefferson N. Wilson (CSA). He survived the War and is buried in the Music cemetery in Floyd Co., Kentucky.

Brother of Jacob & David Kilgore. Born on ' Copper Creek ' Scott County,Va. The regiment was mustered out at Louisville, Sept. 25, 1865, after nearly three years of continuous active service and participating in such a number of fights and skirmishes it would be difficult to enumerate.

Son of Robert Kilgore & Elizabeth Gray. Born on ' Copper Creek,' Scott Co.Va. Enlisted on 10/13/1862 at Peach Orchard, KY as a Corporal. On 2/16/1863 he mustered into 'B' Co. KY 39th Infantry He was Mustered Out on 9/15/1865 at Louisville, KY This regiment was raised by Col. Dills in the fall of 1862 from the counties along the Big Sandy, and was organized in camp at Peach Orchard, where it was mustered into service Feb. 16, 1863.

A 4th great-uncle, Erastus Lambert (1834-1863) was from Pike Co,KY. Enlisted Sept. 1862. Died 20 April 1863 at Louisa, KY. while in service. Buried at New Albany, Ind. National Cemetery.

John Freeman Ramsey died of disease in Camp Bishop in 3/27/1863 at Louisa KY.

My great-great grandfather. Information taken from his military tombstone located in the Herald Family Cemetery in Lloyd, KY.

I beleive this to be the James Ross KIA Near Burin,Kentucky in Carter County December 1862.He was killed while escorting local CSA rangers who over took their guards.Killing the small group of four union home guards.They were were buried in a mass grave near the Frank Wells farm.John T.Wells also rode with the local rangers CSA.At least one local man was charged and moved to camp chase prison.This being Henry Sloas who son Franklin.Henry Sloas is my Third Great Grandfather.

Enlisted at 18, settled in McDowell County, West Virginia after the war, along with his brother, Corporal Curtis Coleman. William married Elizabeth Reed at Garland, WV, and had nine children, the youngest two being twins. One of those twins, William (known as 'Tom') was my grandfather, who was killed in a mining accident in 1926. William died in 1931, his wife in 1933.

Last name sometimes (mis)spelled as Mainard. Thomas was my Great Grandfather and he was photographed in his Civil War uniform and the photo is extant and I have a copy. Curiously, in his photo, Thomas looks like an identical twin to my grown son. We have located his grave in Lawrence County Ky. Mustered out in 1865.

Andrew is my GG Grandfather. He later settled in Tazewell Co, Va. after the Civil War. He is buried in Nevis, Mn next to his son Pvt. Andrew Shortridge 138 Aero Sqd. WWI.

Beleive it or not Amon Brock is my Grandfather! He was 70 years old when my father was born in 1918. He died at the age of 74 and is buried in the Hale Cemetery in Tuttle, Kentucky: a small rural community near Corbin, Kentucky. Amon was a farmer and owned a 125 acre farm in Tuttle where my father, Everett C. Brock and his other brothers and sister were born. All of the children from Amon's second marriage to Dora McHargue are deceased, except for the middle child Charlie Brock who still owns the farm owned by his father and where all of the children were born.

b. 5/14/1844, Mt. Airy, NC. d. 2/23/1876 in Cedar County, Mo. Buried in Alder Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Cedar County, Missouri. m. Martha Elkins Callahan, 12/2/1866 in Jasper County, Mo. John enlisted 10/31/1862. Discharged 9/15/1865.

GG-Uncle Larkin Porter enlisted in Co. G, 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry on May 15, 1863, at Louisa, KY. The 39th fought in several battles and skirmishes in Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. In many cases they were fighting their brothers, relatives, and neighbors. Three of Larkin's brothers served in Co. D, 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Larkin mustered out with his regiment at Louisville, KY, on September 15, 1865.

I think I am also related to Elijah Smallwood Co. D and William VanHook Co. B. I have read that 200 or more men in the 39th KY came from Southwest VA including Washington and Scott Counties. My relatives are from Washington and Scott

His name was also spelled on documents as Jessie Jones. He is buried in Jones Cemetery, Pike County, Kentucky and has a military tombstone.

William enlisted in the Union Army on 3 April 1864 and mustered in 15 May 1864 Catlettsburg, KY. He was wounded in battle and died with smallpox on 28 Feb 1865 in the hospital at Louisa, KY. He was a member of Company H of the 39th KY Volunteer Mounted Infantry.

Muster rolls and materials from National Archives show he enlisted in Co. H, 39th KY on 19 Jul 1863 at Piketon, Pike County, KY. He was captured 14 or 15 Aug 1864 while on a scout in Buchanan County, VA. There is a special 'Notation' with bookmark made in 1887 in his file with muster records. This appears to be an extract from CSA records of his capture, interrogation and imprisonment. Quote from this source. 'Captured Aug 14 '63 in Buchannan Co., VA, while on scout.' 'In his examination before --- Carrington, CSA, at Richmond, VA., he stated that he lived in Pike Co. Ky, and was captured abt Aug 15 '63 in Buchanan Co., VA. by one Capt. Smith; was a Pvt. in Capt. Buchanan's Co. Va. State Line and remained in it until it disbanded. Enlisted in 39th Ky, July 19'63. Did not wish to enlist but was conscripted. Desires to be exchanged. --- Carrington recommends that he be exchanged as a pris. of war.' 'He was brought from Castle --- and confined in Libby, Richd, Va Sept 26 '63. Admitted to Hospital No. 21 Richmond, VA. Nov 18 '63 with --- ----. Retd. to quarters Dec 13 '63. in confinement at Pemmberton Jan 8 '64. Remark - 'vaccinated.' He was again admitted to Hospital 21 Richmond, VA. Jan 14 '64 and died Jan 19 '64 of ---- ---- and Pneumonia.' This completes extract found with his unit muster rolls.

Alexander Hall left home in McDowell Co., West Virginia when 15 yrs old, along with his younger brother, following their Father to enlist with the Union forces in Kentucky. Enlistment Date: 14 September 1862 - Mustered out Company I 39th Infantry Regiment Kentucky on 15 September 1865. Alexander Hall was captured, and sent to Libby Prison, upon his release he was sent to Dakota Territory with a Calvary unit. After the conclusion the Civil War Alexander settled in Britton, South Dakota, where he & his wife raised a large family. Alexander lived the rest of his life as a proud member of G.A.R. he died 1927 and is buried in Marshal Co. South Dakota.

Enrolled at Peach Orchard in Louisa, Lawrence Co. Ky, Dec. 16, 1862. Honorably discharged in Louisville, Sept. 15, 1865. Had been promoted to Corporal by discharge. His pension file contains some interesting information: (1) He and several others were captured and held by Colonel Menifee for three months in 1862; (2) His company was involved in pursuing Morgan in 1864; (3) Married first Nancy Moore, then Margaret Green; (4) Children were Isaac, William, Nancy, Jasper, Daniel, and Cynthia; (5) Lived in Wise Co. Va. and Pike Co. Ky. after the war; (6) Born 1829 in Franklin Co. Va.; Died 1914 in Pike Co. Ky.

Willism Harrison went by the name Harrison Davis. He died in Ashland Kentucky on April 8, 1863 after an illness. He is buried somewhere in Ashland.
