Grandson of Thomas Barlow & Susannah Isbell. gr,nephew of Elizabeth Isbell Land, my 4th gr,grandmother. 3 brothers were Confederate and among ' Morgan's Men ' Soldier`s Rank_In 1 Lt. & Adjt. Soldier`s Rank_Out Capt. Edward C. Barlow Residence was not listed; Enlisted on 9/22/1863 at Catlettsburg, KY as a Adjutant. On 10/5/1863 he was commissioned into Field & Staff KY 40th Infantry He was Mustered Out on 12/30/1864 at Catlettsburg, KY Promotions: * Capt 2/26/1864 (As of Co. B) Intra Regimental Company Transfers: * 2/26/1864 from Field & Staff to company B.

From the Adjutant General's Report as transcribed by Becky Falin, 1996: Sergent Benjamin F. Stewart was killed during service with the 40th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Union Army.

Mustered in and out with the company

Travelled from Wise County, Va to join up in Grayson. Does anybody have any additional info about the unit's battle record than what can be generally found via the internet?

G-G-Uncle James Sippi Johnson enlisted in Carter County, KY, on Sept. 25, 1863, in Co. D, 40th Ky Mtd Inf., USA. He participated in several battles and skirmishes in KY and VA. In many cases he was fighting against his 5 brothers who were all Confederate Soldiers with Field's Partisan Rangers and the 10th Ky Cav. James served in Co. D with three of his brother-in-law's, the Porter boys; John C., William, and Calloway. James was mustered out at the end of his enlistment on Dec. 30, 1864.

The information I have shows John C.Porter charged a local rebel with being involved in the killing of three or four union home guards in Carter County near Burin,Kentucky.The local rebel,Henry Sloas who's son Franklin Sloas and brother John fought with fields rangers CSA.John Sloas took the oath out of Camp Chase Prison.He can be found now with this regiment fighting with the very men that stood against him a few months early.What a war brother against brother.I am not any kin to porter.

John Sloas can also be found with Fields Rangers CSA.John was captured near Webbville,Kentucky with his brother Henry and nephew Franklin.John was sent to camp chase and was release after taking the oath to the a Ohio unit being formed out of Camp Chase sometime there after he joined the 40th (Union )Kentucky.This divided the Sloas family in Eastern Kentucky.

Charles N. Davis was born in 1839 in Carter co. Ky and died June 10 1900 In Carter co. Ky He is buried in McGlones Creek.

Robert was a blacksmith. While on duty and in Mount Sterling,KY, Robert was shoeing the front hoof of a horse when the horse knocked him to the ground and stomped him. He survived but suffered the rest of his life. This info is from his pension application.

John's father and brothers also served in the 53rd and 55th Kentucky Mounted Infantry units.

Born 1840, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Previously served as 2nd Lt. in Company D, 18th Kentucky Vol. Infantry. Commanded Company F, 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry from 1863-1864. Fought against Morgan at Mt. Sterling, and Cynthiana, Kentucky and fought at Saltville, Virginia among many other engagements against Morgan's Raiders in Kentucky. Ran a tobacco business in Knoxville, Pendleton County, Kentucky, after the war. Died in 1885 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.

My uncle was enlisted for several years and was in several different companies. This is one that i have record of.

enlisted 10 Aug 1863 , mustered out with company 30 Dec 1864 Company G 40th Kentucky mounted Infantry. Lived at Muses Mills, Fleming County Kentucky. Robert Henry Gaines was his son, and my great grandfather.

According to the transcription by Becky Falin from the Adjutant General's Report: Moses Stewart enlisted June 20, 1863 and rendered 'Distinguished Service' to this Mounted Infantry Unit during actions in Kentucky in his 12 months service. He was December 30, 1864 at Catlettsburg, KY.
