Captain Company A 14th Louisiana Infantry. His wife Emma Girault was first cousin of Virina Howell, wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.

He was wounded 4 times at Gaines Mills and died August 20, 1862 in Richmond at the CSA hospital. He was 31.

My gg grandfather was in the 14th LA Inf. Co. F He was injured a Fraser's Farm in VA I am researching information about his unit. Before she passed away, my grandmother told me his unit was called the 'Fighting Tigers.' I am just beginning my search; if anyone has information about this unit, I would be very interested in learning more about the unit.

Field was also Asst. Quarter Master. Served 1861-1865 and lived in Floyd, Carroll parish ward 6. Company I was known as Montgomery's '' Tiger Bayou Rifles.'' Field was wounded at the Seven Days Battle in 1862. The 14th Regiment started out as Col. Sulakowski's Polish Brigade then made part of A.P. Hill's/Longstreet's division later transfered to Early's/Gorden's command. The 14th was present at the battles of 2nd Manassas, Chantilly, Harpers Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg. Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Gettysburg ( Culps Hill ) present at Appomattox Court House April 9th 1865. Field also had three other brothers that enlisted in service, Robert Montgomery in the 8th louisiana Infantry, John Montgomery in the 12th Missouri Cavalry and Daniel Montgomery in the 11th Tennessee Infantry killed in battle at Jonesboro,Ga. Albert H. Sansing's military records show that he enlisted on May 20, 1861, as a Private/Musician in Capt. Richard W. Jones' Company, Louisiana Volunteers (NOTE: This company was attached to the 14th Regiment Louisiana Infantry by order of the Secretary of War dated September 19, 1861, S. O. No. 157, and became Company I of that regiment.) The regiment was organized June 16, 1861. It was mustered into Confederate service as the 13th Louisiana Regiment at Camp Pulaski, near Amite, Louisiana, on August 24. The unit received orders to proceed to Virginia to join forces with other state units to defend Richmond. The 13th marched to Yorktown in September to contest the advance of the Union Army. On September 21 the War Department changed the unit's designation to the 14th Louisiana Regiment. The men served in the trenches during the siege of Yorktown in April, 1862, and fought in the Battle of Williamsburg, May 5, 1862.
