1st Maine Heavy Artillery

Benjamin Averill was my grandmother's grandfather. She knew him well as a youngster and has told me what a wonderful man he was. He was promoted to Sergeant sometime after Petersburg's charge, which he lived through. He was shot once but ive yet to find out during which battle. After the war in the 1890's, he continued to serve Maine as a member of the state legislature. All of which I have confirmed. Still a mystery is the family swearing he fought in gettysburg, which means he would have had to have been in a different unit at that time; possible, but I've found no proof in either direction of his wherabouts during that part of the war. Benjamin enlisted aug.21,1862 from Bangor.Me.He entered as a private and was promoted to corporal jan.1,1863.He was wounded and in and out of hospitals . He mustered out may 3,1865. He was my gr,gr,grandfather.

From Eden, Maine. Wounded 19 May 1864 but survived to marry and become my g grandfather. Married Catherine Gilley of Islesford, Maine 22 March 1880 and lived there until his death 10 August 1923, the last Civil War veteran in the Town of Cranberry Isles.

Enlisted in. Mustered out on 18 Aug 1863.Transferred to Company C, Maine 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment on 18 Aug 1863.Mustered out on 28 Apr 1865.

curious regarding battles, know that he was wounded and drew a sizable pension for his wounds.

wounded near Petersburg on 6/18/1864, gunshot wound to ulnar aspect of hand near 5th metacarpal. Other documentation mentions a thigh wound? He rejoined his company in 1865, injured his back while lifting timber, but remained as a soldier until his honorable discharge 9/11/1865 when the 1st Maine was mustered out.

Transferred from Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment Maine on 19 December 1862. Captured on 9 September 1864. Died as a prisoner on 2 March 1865 at Richmond, VA.

This is my great great grandfather. He died of typhoid in Baltimore MD after the battle of Petersburg. He was mustered in on 15 December 1863 at the age of 42 and died 18 June 1864 at age 43. He is buried at Lee Cemetary aka (Southeast Burial Ground) in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. He was originally from Sebec, Maine and married Nancy Malcolm.

Israel was part of the 1st Regiment Heavy Artillery of Maine Volunteers. This regiment was first organized as the 18th Infantry Regiment. Israel mustered into service June 30, 1863. Israel was wounded June 18th in the charge on the enemy works at Petersburg, Virginia. He died at City Point Hospital (8 miles northeast of Petersburg) June 24/25, 1864. He was 17 years old. (At the time of the 1850 census he was 2 years of age). However, the 1850 Census shows Israel was two years of age; the 1860 census shows him as 13; therefore, in 1863 he was 16 years of age. It''s obvious young men didn''t need to prove their age before enlisting. Have visited his grave at City Point. Information I''ve found shows the hospital was called ''City Point'' however, a monument at the cemetery calls the hospital ''Point of Rocks.''
