15th Maine Infantry

William Henry Boyce was Captain Michael Boyce's third child. He initially enrolled as a private in the famous 2nd ME where he attained the rank of Corporal and Sergeant. After the 2nd ME was redistributed to several units (primarily the 20th ME), and after suffering many casualties, Sergeant Boyce was eventually transferred to the 15th ME Infantry. He became 2nd Lt. Boyce, of Company C, and, later, he was promoted to Captain of Company I (just after his father, Captain Michael Boyce, was forced to pull some political strings in order to earn his own, second enlistment - this time to Company K). Captain Michael Boyce's son, William, would serve the remainder of the war with his father. William Henry Boyce served as the Captain of Company I, and Michael Boyce served as the Captain of, both Company I & K). After the Civil War, Colonel William Henry Boyce was honorably discharged. He married Emma Victoria Wade Phelps (probably in Pittsburgh, PA, or Beaver Borough, PA, although I have not verified same with an actual marriage certificate on the date and place of marriage). Together, they raised two boys, William Henry Boyce, Jr. and McKeen Boyce. McKeen Boyce would be the person responsible for trading horses with the Nez Perce Indian Tribe located in Northwest Idaho, during the late 1800s. McKeen Boyce's son, James Mckeen Boyce, served with the Army Air Corps during WWII. McKeen Boyce's grandson, John C. Boyce, enlisted out of college and served with the U.S. Navy, in Pensacola, Fl. John C. Boyce currently works for a Defense Department firm with the Pentagon.

This is my GG grandfather. I have his civil war diary and his enlistment papers and photographs so I know this information is correct.

My great-great-granduncle. Enlisted 7 January 1862, Fort Fairfield, ME. Re-enlisted as Veteran Volunteer 24 January 1864. Mustered out 5 July 1866, Charleston, SC. Died in 1917. One of only a handful of men who served for the entire length of the unit's term of service.

Born in Canada, moved to Maine with family at young age. Enlisted at age 43 for $300 Bonus in January, 1864. Wounded during Red River Campaign. Died of wounds in Washington, DC in August 1864. Buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

From Caribou, ME. Married Mary T. Higgins April 28, 1861. Enlisted in Union Army Nov 2nd, 1861. Assigned to Company G as a Private on 20th December 1861 at the age of 23. Died on 4th (or 18th) July 1862 in Carrollton, LA of the fever. Burial: Carrollton, LA. Relocated to Chalmette National Cemetery Sec: 17 Grave: 1216.

Initially, at the beginning of the Civil War the successful business owner, Michael Boyce, was appointed by the Governor of the State of Maine to be a Recruitment Officer on behalf of the Civil War effort. There are many Newspaper Advertisements highlighting the recruitment efforts for volunteers of the 15th ME Infantry. Part of the recruitment efforts promised enlistees $13 per month pay, including rations. $100 bounty at end of the Civil War. Michael Boyce then was elected and served as a Captain in both Companies I (1861-1864) and K (1864-1866) for the 15th ME Infantry. Honored as one of the longest serving officers in the Civil War, his son, Captain William Henry Boyce, served as an officer in Company I when Captain Michael Boyce reenlisted and was assigned to Company K. A statue of Captain Boyce's likeness can be viewed in Bangor, today. Two daughters died while he was serving his country. His only other surviving son, James C Boyce, became a lawyer and practiced law in NY City, Oil City, PA, as well as Pittsburgh, PA. James C Boyce's son, Dr. John Welch Boyce, became a Major during WWI, and he was responsible for the approval of all soldiers shipped overseas, to France. Michael Boyce is buried alongside his wife, Ruth Hodgdon Dyer Boyce, and four of his children (whom died during childhood) in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Section #1, Lot #407, located on 449 Ohio St, in Bangor, ME. The large family lot sits on a hill near the large mausoleum. Michael Boyce and three of his friends donated the land for the cemetery to the Catholic Church.

Colonel Michael Boyce's son would serve the remainder of the war with his father. William Boyce as the Colonel of Company I, and Michael Boyce as the Colonel of Company K. After the Civil War Colonel William Henry Boyce was honorably discharged. Boyce married Josephine (surname unknown at this time) and, together, they raised two children, in NY City. For some reason I am having difficulties locating William Henry Boyce's actual place and date of death.

Buried at Cave Hill National Cemetery, Louisville, KY; Section C Site 4095 He married (1) Susan A. Cooley, 19 Feb 1862 in Augusta, ME. He married (2) Armonia A. McPherson 11 Sep 1890 in Boston, MA Child of James Wakefield and Susan Cooley is: James Frederick Wakefield, born 27 Jul 1865 in Windsor, ME; died 05 Apr 1908 in Philadelphia, PA. Child of James Wakefield and Armonia McPherson is: Hazel Wakefield, born Feb 1897 in Indiana.
