My great, great grandfather's name was James Vincent O'Connor. He was from Brockton, MA. He tried to join the MA volunteers but was too young. He ran away to Maine and joined the 31st Maine under the name 'James Vincent'. A genealogic researcher discovered this when we tried to get him a replacement headstone and could not find his records. He was wounded, we thought at Richmond, and evacuated to Washington. He applied for disability later but could not get it because of the name change. The Civil War Vet's organization did get him his original headstone when they researched his records.

Transferred from Company B, 32nd Infantry Regiment Maine on 1 December 1864. Died of disease on 7 April 1865. Buried at Alexandria National Cemetery.

Pvt. Isaac Raymond died July 5, 1864 from a wound suffered July 3. Records indicate this may have been during the Siege of Petersburg. He is interred at City Point National Cemetery, Hopewell, Virginia. Isaac Raymond is my maternal 2x great grandfather.

Enlisted in Company D, Maine 31st Infantry Regiment on 11 Mar 1864. Mustered out at hospital. Was wounded yet survived the war. From the US Adjutant General Military Records, 'Freeman P. Bridges, Company D, Thirty-first Regiment Maine Volunteers. The charge of desertion has been removed from his record, and a discharge certificate as of the date he left the service, January 1, 1865, has been issued to him.' s/o of Consider Woodbridge Bridges and Julia Ann Bridges. b. 20 Aug 1844 Bucksport, ME d. 28 Dec 1910 Bucksport. Capt. Freeman Parker Bridges is my 1st cousin, 4x removed.

Cpl. Colon L. Ober enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 31st Maine Inf. Rgt., which was organized at Augusta in Mar. and Apr. 1864. Mustered into to Federal Service on 18 Apr. 1864, the regiment left the State for Washington, D.C. The 31st Maine was assigned (along with its' sister regiment, the 32nd Maine) to the 2nd Bde., 2nd Div., 9th Corps, Army of the Potomac. The 31st Maine participated in the Battles of the Wilderness (06 May 1864), Spottsylvania (08-21 May 1864), the North Anna (23-26 May 1864), and Cold Harbor (01-12 Jun. 1864), before participating in the initial Assault on Petersburg (17 Jun. 1864), the Siege of Petersburg (17 Jun. 1862-02 Apr. 1865), the Battle of the Crater (30 Jul. 1864), Poplar Springs Church (30 Sep. 1864), the successful Assault on Petersburg (02 Apr. 1865), and the Occupation of Petersburg (03-20 Apr. 1865). The 31st Maine then participated in the Grand Review at Washington, D.C. on 23 May 1865, and was mustered-out of Federal service on 15 Jul. 1865. The 31st Maine was a hard-fighting regiment that lost 18 Officers and 161 Enlisted Men killed or mortally-wounded-in-action (total: 179 combat fatalities). After the Civil War, Colon Ober moved to Newton, Mass.; his descendant, DOUGLASS J. OBER (my late father's cousin) was killed in the infamous Cocoanut Grove Fire, in Boston, in 1942.

Abner mustered into service March 11, 1864. His discharge shows he was born in Edmunds, Maine, that he was 18 years; 5 feet 7 inches high; with a sandy complexion, blue eyes, red hair and a Millman by occupation. D.K. Hobart enrolled him into service on Feb 19, 1864 at Edmunds, Maine, for a term of three years. The National Archives show that he was captured at Gaines Mill, Virginia, June 3, 1864, confined at Richmond, Virginia, June 4, 1864, and sent to Andersonville, Georgia, June 8, 1864. He died at Andersonville Prison, July 25, 1864 (Grave #3952). The 31st was part of Burnside''s Ninth Corps.

Enlisted at age 16. He weighed about 130lbs. In battle he was in a hand to hand bayonet fight with a larger and stronger Confederate Soldier. He was tiring rapidly when he heard a shout and a huge Union soldier bayonetted his opponent with one thrust, shouted again and disappeared down the battle line.

Cain was from County Cork, Ireland and fought in the 31st Maine, Co. E in 1864. He was wounded twice. He was my great great grandfather and lived in Easton, Maine. He died 12/10/1888.

Mustered March 12th 1864. Participated in the Battle of the Wilderness and all following engagements of the Army of the Patomac, including Cold Harbor. Although commissioned a lieutenant, Edwin had command of his company during all of that time. Edwin was mortally wounded and taken prisoner, most likely just northeast of Fletcher's Redoubt, to confederate Barton’s brigade field hospital. He died June 7th. 9 years later his father, Dr. Luther Rogers, received a letter from a man who's son was a southern surgeon. The surgeon had treated Edwin in the field hospital and noticed a fraternity pin on his uniform. The surgeon was a member of the same fraternity (DKE) and did everything he could to care for his fraternity brother. With the letter was included a lock of Edwin's hair and the fraternity pin. Edwin's grave is at the Cold Harbor cemetery, Cold Harbor, Hanover County, Virginia, USA, plot 812. There is also a memorial inscription for Edwin on the back of his mother's grave stone on the Patten Cemetery, Patten Maine.

Enlisted in Company E, 29 Feb 1864 in Smyrna. Mustered in Augusta in March. Died of disease 17 July 1864 at the Regimental Hospital at Meade Station. Final burial is in City Point National Cemetery, Hopewell City VA.

Born 11 July 1841 to John and Asenath (Brett) Tibbetts in Monson Maine. Returned home to Maine in 1865 to marry Susan (Chase) Wallace and raise 7 children in Brockton Massachusetts. He is a great great grandfather on my mother's side of the family.
