1st Regiment, Cole's Cavalry, Potomac Home Brigade

please contact me with any photos or info. you may have of your ancestor. i have a photo of abraham dern, my great great grandfather, also other members. abraham enlisted aug. 10,'61 and discharged aug 19,'64. captured twice, first time at harpers ferry in '62 and 2nd time at point of rocks in '63. sent to libby then belle isle where he contracted dysentary. lost his horse and equipment at new market on 15, may '64.

According to C. Arthur Newcomer in his book, 'Cole's Cavalry, or Three Years in the Saddle in the Shenandoah Valley,' Charles Fosler was instrumental in rescuing his commanding officer, Henry Cole, when his horse bolted and raced toward enemy lines. Born at sea in U.S. waters on a ship from Germany (parents were from Baden), Charles settled in Pennsylvania, at some point moved to Maryland and joined Cole's Cavalry in Western Maryland. He was wounded several times. First he was hit by a bullet in the arm, then in an ambush by Mosby's Raiders, his horse was shot out from under him, and he suffered a severe wound to the head. He apparently also suffered a saber wound in the head during a cavalry clash. Refusing to go home, he was placed on light duty for the remainder of the war, and was honorably discharged in June of 1865. He is my maternal g-g-grandfather.

David Spielman, resident of Hagerstown, Washington Co. MD and son of David Spielman and Catherine Sailer, enlisted 9 Mar 1865 with the Potomac Home Brigade in Cole's Cav. Mustered out 28 Jun 1865. - EMMITSBURG CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS 1861-65 compiled by John Miller. David's brother, Hiram, also served in Cole's Cav.

Jacob was an inmate and may have died at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Elizabeth City, Virginia. Of German ancestry, and born in Baltimore, Jacob was a brickmaker by trade. His older brother, William, served in the Third Maryland Infantry. They are both my paternal g-g-granduncles.
