25th Massachusetts Infantry

Otis Worthington Holmes was a member of the 25th Mass. Infantry from 1861 - 1863 when he mustered out to take a commision as a Lt. in the 36th Mass. Infantry. Any information on the 25th Mass Infantry would be greatly appreciated.

Enlisted on Oct 5th, 1861. Served till expiration of term. Oct 20th, 1864.

Alonzo K. Bucklin(1833-1902) was wounded at Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 3, 1864. He was married to Betsey Mariah(Farwell)1833-1935. They were married on March 3, 1853 in Northborough, MA and had three sons: Edward William 1854- 1870, Edgar 1857-1930 and Frederick 1869-1962. Alonzo is buried in Rowley, MA in the Rowley Burial Ground cemetery.

Married Judith Holmes Prouty on April 27th, 1859. Nathan was from North. Brookfield, Mass. Company C, 25th Mass, died of wounds at Cold Harbour June 3, 1864. They had two childern, the older boy was George Sumner Dickinson. Born Feb 18, 1860, married June 27th, 1893 to Miss Mabel C. (Allen) Doone. They had one daughter named Bernice Prouty Dickinson, Born Aug 17th, 1906. The second boy was Charles Levi Dickinson. Born Aug 3rd, 1861. Married on Oct 19th, 1899 to Susie Eugenie Thompson. They had a son named Roger Francis Dickinson.

Edward R. Graton, private, 19 at enlistment. Wounded at the battle of Roanoke Island Feb. 8, 1862 and died of wounds on March 9, 1862. When wounded 'he was saved from instant death by his prayer-book, the ball stopping at the verse, Thou, gracious Lord, art my defense, On thee my hopes rely.' Source: D.H. Hurd. Thomas Magee: Co C. Residence Douglas, MA; trade: mechanic; age 33; enlisted & muster: Oct. 14, 1861. Wounded Feb. 8, 1862, Roanoke Island. N. C. ; discharged for wounds, Oct. 24, 1862, in Mass. New York Times dated February 21, 1862, article THE BURNSIDE EXPEDITION: LATEST FROM ROANOKE ISLAND. Thomas N. Magre [Magee], Co. C, side gunshot wound. Wounded in side by grapeshot while charging the enemy at the battle of Roanoke Island. After his discharge he would eventually re-enlist in the 3rd Rhode Island Cavalry. He would perish: lost on steamer North America off Cape Hatteras, Dec. 22, 1864. George Merriam was killed at Cold Harbor, VA on June 3, 1864. He was a chair maker from Northborough, MA. George was a brother-in-law of Alonzo Bucklin, married to his sister Nancy Bucklin. Burial site unknown.

Thomas Norcross was another brother-in-law of Alonzo Bucklin. He was married to Alonzo's sister Louisa Buklin.

2nd Lt, Merrick Prouty was promoted to 1st Lt for meritorious service. He was detached from the 25th Massachusetts and in charge of the ordance on Roanoke Island. He was in command of a battery and they fired on Fort. Macon, NC.

He was wounded at Cold Harbor and Petersburg, June 1864. Bernard is my sister-in-law's great grandfather.

George E. Kent, Co. H, private, 18 at enlistment. Wounded at the battle of Roanoke Island Feb. 8, 1862 and died of wounds on October 10, 1862.

Enlisted as a Musician on 16 September 1861 at the age of 20. Mustered out on 20 October 1864.
