Otis Worthington Holmes fell mortally wounded on June 17th, 1864 during the Burnside Siege of Petersburg. He later died in Washington D.C. on June 21st. He was my Great Great Uncle. If anyone knows of the 36th Infantry and their service with Burnsides Army of the Potomac IX Corps, please email me. Thanks, Burt Holmes

After the war, Henry traveled to Raleigh, NC to establish Raleigh Institute. It later became Shaw University, a school founded for the education of the freed slaves.

NOT my ancestor--but, he deserves special mention: JEROME PIERCE, a 31 year old mechanic from Orange, Mass., enlisted as a Private in Co. H of the 36th Mass. Inf. Rgt. on 04 Aug. 1862; he was mustered-into Federal service as a Corporal on 27 Aug. 1862; he was promoted to Sergeant (date unknown). The 36th Mass. Inf. Rgt. served in Col. John Curtin's 1st Bde., BG Robert Potter's 2nd Div., MG Ambrose Burnside's 9th Corps, in the Army of the Potomac in 1864. In the Assault at Spottsylvania on 12 May 1864, SGT. PIERCE was killed in action; presumably shortly after the war, his remains were removed from the Spottsylvania battlefield, and re-interred at the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. 'On May 12, 1864, Union Army soldier Jerome Pierce was killed in the Battle of Spot[t]sylvania Courthouse. Like many thousands of other soldiers, he was buried in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery, where my great-grandfather, Andrew Birdsall, was a caretaker. A few years after the war ended, Jerome Pierce's distraught family sent my great-grandfather a letter begging him to find their son's grave for them. When he did, they sent him $100, and asked him to decorate it once a year on their behalf. Next May [1994] marks the 130th Anniversary of the death of Jerome Pierce, and the 121st time that my family has placed a wreath at his grave. We still have the $100 in a bank account, the interest fom which pays for his flowers each Spring. 'All I know about Jerome Pierce is that he was a 31 year old mechanic who left Orange, Massachusetts, to join the 36th [Massachusetts] Infantry [Regiment] of the Union Army in 1862. My family long ago lost contact with his family. For the past ten years [i.e., 1983-1993], I have been trying to find his descendants to tell them the story of my great-grandfather's promise, and to learn more about the man whose grave I've decorated all my life. //Signed// Alice Heflin Abernathy, 1000 Littlepage Street, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.' Shot though left leg at Campbell's Station, TN 16 November 1863. Recuperated at Fort Rice, Petersburg, VA. Transferred to Company G, promoted to Corporal and discharged 23 December 1864.
