My Great Grand Father (x4) was in the 49th Massachusetts (Company F) as a Corporal and later the 57th Massachusetts (Company C) 'The Stockbridge company' as Sergeant. He died May 12th, 1864 at the 'Bloody Angle' seeing Combat on the 6th,10th and 12th during the Battle for the Wilderness at Spotsylvania court house. Ive learned alot about the 57th and that battle but I know nothing about the 49th and the battle of Port Hudson Louisiana......Except that most union troops fell to sickness. Thanks very much.......

Henry enlisted on September 6, 1862. He mustered on September 19, 1862 and was killed by a sharpshooter on June 21, 1863 in Port Hudson, Louisiana. He was shot in the head by a sharpshooter about 3:00PM and died about 11:00PM. He was the only Union soldier killed during the period June 21-23. In 1867-1868 he was probably reburied in the Port Hudson National Cemetery in an unknown numbered grave along with 3,000 other unknown soldiers both Union and Confederate.

Mills S Reynolds, was a good soldier, from Barrington, he was one of the original volunteers, and fell in his nineteenth year.

Charles Henry enlisted in the 49th Regiment Company E September 8, 1862. He was honorably discharged at Pittsfield, Massachusetts on Sept 1, 1863. He received a gunshot wound to the head on March 26, 1863 at Stone Store, near Port Hudson Louisiana. The same year was hospitalized at Baton Rouge for a broken arm after being thrown against artillery. After his discharge he moved to Newark New Jersey to reunite with his siblings. He married and had three children. He was born in New York City February 1, 1842. His parents died when he was 10 years old and he was left orphaned later to be sent to live with a family in Sheffield MA. He died in Meriden, CT May 19, 1903 and is buried at the Old St. Mary's Cemetery in New Britain, Connecticut. He was a GAR member, and they handled his funeral.

William Maxwell was my gr gr gr grandfather and was born in Claverack, NY on 8/4/1839. Enlisted 9/1/1862 while living in New Marlborough, MA. and was mustered 9/19/1862 at the age of 23. He returned from the war with a head wound received before the battle at Port Hudson, LA, May 27, 1863. Mustered out of service 9/1/1863. He lived until 5/30/1906 and died in Great Barrington, MA.

John was my GT-GT Uncle. Living in Lanesboro Mass he enlisted at Pittsfield, Mass September 20th 1862, mustered in Oct 28, 1862, mustererd out Sept 1, 1863.
The 49th Mass Volunteers were organized in Pittsfield Ma. and
moved to NY Nov 21, 1862 had Provost Duty Till Jan 24 1863. Embarked for New Orleans La. on the steamer 'Illinois' Jan 24th. Arriving February 3rd. Thence moved to Carrollton and Baton Rouge LA. Attached to the 1st division, 19th corps, Dept. of the Gulf to August 1863.
Service:
Reconnaissance toward Port Hudson Mar 13-20. Action at Plains Store May 21 and the siege of Port Hudson July 9. Moved to Donaldsonville July 9-10 and duty there till August 1. Action at Cox's (Knock's) Plantation July 12-13. Moved to Baton Rouge Aug 1st Thence to Pittsfield MA. Mustered out Sept 1, 1863.

One day last summer (2009) while antique shopping in Gettysburg, PA, my husband purchased an army discharge paper for me. It reads as follows:
[IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MR. BICKNELL IS NOT A RELATIVE, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO CONTACT HIS RELATIVES SO THEY MAY SEE HIS CIVIL WAR ARMY DISCHARGE PAPER]
'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Know ye, that Oscar A. Bicknell a Private of Captain Byron Weston's Company,(K) 49th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers who was enrolled on the 14th day of October one thousand eight hundred and 62 to serve Nine Months is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States this First day of September 1863, at Pittsfield, Mass by reason of Expiration of Service. (No objection to his being re-enlisted is know to exist.)
Said Oscar A. Bicknell was born in Dalton in the state of Massachusetts, is 21 years of age, 6 feet 1/2 inches high, tan complexion, Lt. Brown eyes, Lt. Brown hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a Farmer.
Given at Pittsfield, Mass., this First day of September 1863.
