52nd Massachusetts Infantry

Was born in Eastport, Maine May 27, 1836, later served with the Seventy-Sixth United States Colored Infantry in Louisiana and was mustered out 1866. Moved to Michigan after the war where he was a physician for many years. He died October 09, 1924 at Lansing, Michigan

Recently came across 10 letters written by Frank Clapp to his sister mostly from Baton Rouge LA where he was preparing for the assault on Port Hudson.

Enlisted as a Private on 8 September 1862 at the age of 25. Enlisted in Company D, 52nd Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 11 Oct 1862. Promoted to Full Sargent on 25 January 1863. Mustered out Company D, 52nd Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 14 August 1863 in Camp Miller, Greenfield, MA

Enlisted on 8 September 1862 at age 18 in Company D, 52nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Killed in action 6 July 1863 during the Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana.

William Watson of Conway, Franklin County, was in the 52nd Mass. Volunteer infantry, Company D.

Enlisted 29 Aug 1862 at Camp Miller, Greenfield, MA Commissioned an officer in Company E, Massachusetts 52nd Infantry Regiment on 11 Oct 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 23 Oct 1862. Wounded at Donaldsonville, La. on 28 June 1863 Mustered out on 14 Aug 1863 at Camp Miller, Greenfield, MA.

He was soon appointed Corporal on June 11, 1863. He re-enlisted into the 30th Unattached Company Heavy Artillery. He mustered in on September 1, 1864. He served nine months and on June 16, 1865 he mustered out as Sergeant. He was 22 when his military service ended.
