61st Massachusetts Infantry

Still trying to verify Jerome Samuel is from Westfield Mass and that his given name is Samuel Jerome. 2 books of his I have in my possession suggest he went by Jerome Samuel, as he signed the books in that manner.

He was my Great Grandpa

Charles served from August 26, 1864 and was discharged on June 4, 1865. He was elected sergeant on the day he enlisted in the regiment was promoted to 1st Sergeant on March 1, 1865 was by the time he was discharged from the Army he was a Sergeant-Major.

John Gregg was a Drummer Boy in Company B of the 61st Regiment Massachusetts Infantry(Volunteers)which was the last regiment to be called up for service in the Civil War. He enlisted from New Salem Massachusetts at the age of 16 around October 1864 and trained at Gallops Island in Boston Harbor. He participated in the Petersburg Campaign and was present with his unit under Major General Hartranft near Appomattox at the surrender. He died on March 5, 1936 at the Old Soldiers Home in Chelsea, Massachusetts and is buried in Old Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, Massachusetts.

Edgar Stevens was my great-great grandfather, and I do not know much about him. He served in the 51st Mass. Infantry, Company F, in 1862-63 and in the 61st, Company I, in 1865. I own a small percussion derringer-style handgun, rather similar to the one used to shoot President Lincoln, that Edgar carried while in the service. A dealer once told me that the Army often did not issue firearms to the soldiers; they brought their own with them, and these small handguns were commonly sold for $2 each in railroad stations. Edgar must have been proud of his Civil War service as he named his son Winfield Scott Stevens. My mom almost named me Scott Winfield Stevens in his honor, but a relative told her that 'Winnie' was a jerk, so she went a different route.

Promoted to Full Major (As of 61st MA Inf) on 9 November 1864. Commissioned on 19 November 1864. Promoted to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel on 9 April 1865. Mustered out on 4 June 1865. (Click homepage for picture)
