17th Michigan Infantry

Horace Gallop (also spelled Gallup sometimes) was a cousin to my great great grandfather James S Crego (who served in Co A of the 19th MI). Horace's mother Polly (Crego) Gardner was sister to James'father Henry Crego. Horace was 36 years old when he enlisted as chaplain to Co S of the 17th MI in Januray of 1863. He mustered out disabled a year later in January of 1864. He married a Sarah Turk and was a prominent Baptist minister. Horace's brother Anson served in Co c of the 9th MI.

David V. Lilly was killed in the regiments first action at South Mtn.

Son on John A. & Sarah Potter. Samuel Potter was enrolled on the 4th day of August, 1862 at Kalamazoo, in Company D, 17th Regiment of Michigan.

From Fulton, Michigan Enlisted on July 08, 1862 at GratiotPromotions to sergt and then 2nd Lieut of May 26 1865. Wounded September 14 1862 South Mountain MD. Mustered out on June 03, 1865 at Delaney House, Washington, DC. After the war Joseph lived in Popeii, Michigan.

Company C, 70th New York Infantry Company I, 17th Michigan Infantry From Lawrence, Michigan, Herrick enlisted in the 70th New York Infantry April 29, 1861 at Paw Paw, Michigan for 3 years service at age 22. He attained the rank of Corporal before being discharged for disability at Camp McMillan on October 21, 1861. He re-entered service in the 17th Michigan Infantry on May 29, 1862 at Lawrence, Michigan as a Sergeant for 3 years service. He was wounded in action at Antietam, Maryland on September 17, 1862 receiving gunshot wounds to the left leg and left chest. His brother Orin, also in the 17th Company I was wounded 2 days earlier at the Battle of South Mountain. Herrick survived the wounds and was discharged for disability on June 1, 1863 at Detroit, Michigan. His post war residence was South Haven, Michigan http://www.michiganinthewar.org/photos/hhodges.htm
