Henry was born 10 Jan 1821 in Bexley, Greene County, Mississippi. The 1860 census finds him at age 39 in Greene Co. Miss. the Post Office is at McLeod's. Henry has 3 cards in Co A 17th Battalion Partisan Rangers [Steed's] which he enlisted in on 10 Mar 1862 in Jackson Co. Miss. enlisted by Capt. Steed for the war. Assigned Dept of Miss. & East Louisiana. On 24 Dec 1863 the 17th was consolidate and became Co A 9th Mississippi Cavalry. Assigned to Dept of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida. Under the command of Col Horace H Miller as part of Ferguson's Brigade. He has 3 cards in his archival file for the 9th. Miss Cav. Battles: Selma, Atlatnta Campaign, Siege of Savannah. He gave up the fight in May of 1865. He married twice and fathered 16 children, 1st Martha Anne Lundy who died 21 Oct 1867 and 2nd Louisa Jane Courtney who died 31 Mar 1944. He died in 1915 in Leakesville, Greene County, Miss and is buried on old Hwy 24 in the Unity Cem, in Greene Co. Miss.

Frances was born 26 April 1841 in Georgia. The 1860 census finds him at 18 years old in the Southern District of Perry Co. Miss. The Post Office is at Monroe. He enlisted In Jackson Co. Miss. 27 March 1862 Co A 17th Battalion Partisan Rangers [Capt. later Majour Abner C Steed's] He was transferred 1 March 1863 from Co A to Co. E. In May of 1863 he is absent from his unit on detached duty guarding Quartermaster stores in Hancock County. He has 3 cards in his archival file for the 17th. The 17th Battalion was dissolved, and the men reenlisted in the newly formed 9th Regiment Miss. Cavalry 24 Dec 1863. This was Millers Regiment part of Furguson's Mississippi Cavalry Brigade. I am certain that he served in the 9th but have not found his archival record. He died 15 Apr 1927 at Gainsville, Hancock County, Miss. and buried in the Neely Cem. in Greene Co. Miss. He was the father-in-law of my distant cousin.

Pvt. Kittrell enlisted on March 18, 1862 and served until he surrendered with his regiment at Meridian, Ms., and was paroled at Mobile, Al., on May 23, 1865. He was born December 5, 1842 and died on October 13, 1912. He is buried at Mutual Rights Cemetery, Greene County, Ms.

George was born 23 Nov 1946 in Neely, Greene County, Miss. He enlisted 1 April 1864 in Co A 17th Battalion Partisan Rangers [Steed's] enlisted in Jasper Co. Miss. by Major Steed. On 2 April 1864 this Battalion consolidate and became the 9th Miss. Cavalry [Miller's Regt] Furgerson's Brigade, Irverson's Division, Wheeler's Cavalry. Saw action during the Atlanta Campaign. Furgerson's Brigade was part of the escort for President Davis during his attempted escape in Georgia. George died 29 Nov 1919 and is buried at the Mutual Rites Cem. at Avery, Greene County Miss. He was married to my distant cousin Martha Abigail Neel. PS: to other researchers. There is another individual with the same name in this unit.

William was born 2 Oct 1847 in the Buck Creek community of Greene County, Mississippi. The 1860 census has him at age 13 in that community. He has 5 family members serving in Co D of the 17th Partisan Rangers which would in Dec of 1864 be merged with the 9th Miss. Cavalry. The 17th was commanded by Lt. Col. Abner C Steed. William has no archival records that I could find. However, the Mississippi State CSA data base states that he enlisted 8 March 1864 at age 16. As he was a member of the 17th when it merged with the 9th Miss. I rest assured he served there also. The state archives state he mustered out 22 May 1865 when the 9th surrendered. He was the son of Edward Washington Byrd b. 1817 and Rebecca E Walker b. 1828. William died 18 Jan 1927 and is buried in Neely Cem. in Greene County, Miss. He did not marry. The last census I have for his is 1900 where he is living with his brother Frank and his family, working as farm labor. I tip my Kepi to William. Deo Vindice.

Alexander Young was the son of Green Young and Sarah. He lived in Clarke County Mississipp. Married Maria Busby. They show in Mobile, Ala. in Census prior to CW. Alexander returned to his home state MS and joined the calvary. I will also post on 17th MS Calvary Co. B. Alexander was a 3rd LT. with that unit. I have been attempting to locate his burial site.Family has it that he returned to his family in Mobile...may have died in 1866. His wife Maria remarried: Moses Clifton in Mobile. I have been searching for his burial site..would like to have a Conf. marker if ther is none on his grave.

John was born 27 Mar 1842 in McLain, Greene County, Miss. The 1860 census finds him at 18 y/o in Greene Co. Miss., The Post Office is at Buck Creek. He enlisted 8 April 1862 and mustered 14 May 1862 in Co F 17th Battalion [Steed's] Mounted Parisan Rangers from Perry Co. Miss. Enlisted by Capt. W Y Evans for three years. He has 2 cards in the archives for this unit. The 17th was dissolved, and the men were re-enlisted by Capt. Stephens in the newly formed 9th Regiment Miss Calvary on 14 May 1863. Known as Miller's Regiment which served in Ferguson's Cavalry Brigade until its surrender at Meridian and subsequent parole at Mobile Ala, 13 May 1865. John died 21 Aug 1915 in Neely, Greene Co. Miss and is buried at Buffalo Cem. in that county. We are related by a distant marriage via my cousin Mary Argent Williams. May his soul be enjoying a restful peace.

Charles Byrd was a 22 years old Farmer from Greene Co Mississippi. Date of enlistment unknown but he had four brother who enlisted in this unit on 1 Sept 1863. He mustered in with Capt. Benjamin Stevens in Perry Co Mississippi. He began his service in Co F 17th Battalion Miss. Cav. His unit was surrendered at Mobile, Alabama on 23 May 1865.

Edward Washington was about 43 years old when he enlisted on 1 Sept 1863 in Co F 17th Battn Mississippi Cavalry. Steede's . He has two cards on file. He joined from Greene Co. Miss. with two of his brothers John A and Michael King Byrd. This unit became Co D 9th Mississippi Cavalry.

James like his three brothers who joined on 1 Sept 1863 from Greene County Mississippi has only two cards in his file. He was also sworn in by Capt. B Stevens for 3 years. They were all paid up to 31 Oct. 1863 by Capt. W.C. Butler. I have been unable to find his death date or his place of burial. His three brothers survived the war.

John began his service in Co F 17th Battalion Miss. Cavalry. This unit was known as Steede's Battn: Miss. Cavalry. Enlisting from Geeen Co. Miss. on 1 Sept. 1863. Enlisted by Capt. B. Stevens for 3 years. There is only 1 card in his military file. This unit eventually became Co D 9th Mississippi Cavalry. John Survived the war. He died in 1878 and is buried at Sweetwater Cemetery, Leaksville, Green County Mississippi. Deo Vindice

Michael enlisted on 1 Sept. 1863 in Co F. 17th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry - Steede's -. He survived the war and lived to be 57 years old. He died 7 March 1891 and is buried in the Byrd Family Cemetey in Greene County, Mississippi

Thomas was born 18 April 1837 in Covington Co. Miss. The 1860 census shows him at age 23 in the Southern District of Perry Co. Miss. The Post Office is at Augusta. He enlisted as Sgt 5 April 1861 another source says he enlisted 14 May 1862. in Co F 17th Battalion Miss. Cavalry [Mounted Partisan Rangers "Steed's Battalion"] for 3 years. Enlisted in Perry County, Miss by Capt. W Y Evans. He was appointed to the rank of 2nd lieut. 15 Aug 1862. The transfer to the 9th Regiment Miss. Cavalry began with his discharge from the 17th Battalion which dissolved on 20 Jan 1863 where he was paid. The troops were then processed into a new unit. On 1 Feb 1863 he is in Co D 9th Miss. Cavalry [Millers Regiment.] as 2nd Lieut. He has 10 items in his archival file in the 17th with one of them that says see 9th Miss Cav. I did not find his records in the 9th. The 17th was initially assigned to protect the Miss. Costal area. Later participated in the Atlanta Campaign, Battle of Waynesborough and siege of Atlanta. Thomas died 29 Jan 1900 in McLain, Greene Co. Miss and is buried in the Buffalo Cem. at that place. He married twice, to sisters. The first wife gave his one child and died. He then married her sister Sophronia Angelina Breland. We are related by a distant marriage.

James was born 8 Aug 1827 in Leakesville, Greene County, Miss. He joined initially at about age 35 y/o Co F 17th Battalion Miss. Partisan Rangers. Steven's Co. Steede's Battalion. He has 3 cards of his service. The 17th was merged with the 9th Miss. Cavalry on 1 Sep 1963, and he is now in Co D of the 9th. He has 3 cards in that archival file. There is a comment on the CMR for Nov - Dec 1864 that he is on furlough from the hospital. The battles listed are Selma, Atlanta Campaign, and Siege of Savannah. The 9th commanded by Col H.H. Miller surrendered at Merdian, Miss. and was paroled at Mobile Ala. on 23 May 1865. James died 7 May 1906 and is buried at the Sweetwater Cem. in Leakesville, Greene Co. Miss. We are related by a very distant marriage. [have to admit the blood is thin but still Kin.] He is related by marriage to the Byrd family of which there are 5 in Company D.

William was born 7 June 1834 in Choctaw Co Ala. He enlisted at Paulding, Miss. on 25 Oct 1863 in Capt. Charles A Jenning's Co. Millers Regt. Miss. cavalry. This became Co G 9th Cavalry. He has 3 cards in his archival file. On 25 Nov 1863 he is sent home to find a horse and then report to Carthage. Served a period under SW. Fergerson's Brigade, Iverson's Division, General Wheelers Command. The 9th was used as Scouts, Pickets and Reconnaissance. Saw action in the Atlanta Campaign and was mentioned in action at Kennesaw Mountain for gallant service. He died 22 Jan 1911 in Sandersville, Jones Co. Miss

William was about 43 years old when enlisted in Co I 9th Miss Cavalry.. He has two cards in his archival file. The cover card and the surrender card. No date of enlistment. His unit surrendered at Citronelle, Ala. and was pardoned at Meridian, Lauderdale Co. Miss. He served in S.W. Fergerson's Brigade , Iverson's Division, under General Wheeler's command. His regimental history has him engaged at Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta Campaign. Some of the 9th was part of the escort for President Jefferson Davis on his attempt to escape in Georgia. He married twice and moved to Louisiana. He died 20 Dec 1886 and is buried at Central Cem. Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, La.

I believe he was a courier. He was from Alabama originally and possibly his original unit was merged with the 9th later in the war. His brother in law, John Ellenburg could possibly have been with him. He was a witness for his pension.
