21st Mississippi Infantry

My GGGrandfather, a Methodist minister and Regimental Chaplain of the 21st Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He died April 1, 1913 and is buried in the city cemetary at Pelahatchie, Mississippi. May God bless our Southron nation.

Died in civil war prison comp near shelbyville TN

Enlisted on March 20, 1862, Brookhaven MS. Listed his age as 17 but he was still 15 at muster. Every battle until severely wounded at Wilderness( May 64). Returned to muster in Sept.(64). Captured at High Bridge on the 6th. Sent to PT.LOOKOUT. Released June 6,1965 at 18 yrs of age. Walked home to Mississippi with only 1 brother remaining. Loss of Father(Knoxville),2 brothers(Leesburg and Seven Pines) and bro-in-law (Wilderness).

Enlisted May 15,1861 Brookhaven Ms. Age 18 at enlistment. Every major battle, captured at Gettysburg. Same regiment with Father, two brothers and brother in law.

Enlisted March 17. 1862 along with 2 sons and son in law in the same regiment. Stated he was 45 yet, he was actually 50. Two other sons had enlisted in '61 with the 12th and 18th. Fell ill on march to Knoxville. Captured in Louden TN,sent to Camp Chase,died in Knoxville Hospital.Papers say buried in 'City Cemetery'. Cannot locate.

He was the flag bearer for Company C. He was around 7 feet tall and never wounded in battle. He died in Russelville Tn at the smallpox hospital there.

A cousin, Pvt. Nathan Oliver (1837-1862) was from Franklin Co, Miss. First enlisted in 7th Miss. Infantry. Died of pneumonia at Farmville, Va. 29th March, 1862.

Enlisted March 17 1862 with Father in law and two bros in law. 38 yrs of age. Mortally wounded at battle of Wilderness. Leg amputated and died at Gordonsville Hospital. May 18, 1864.

John Andrew was an NY native who moved to Wilkinson Co., MS to install a cotton gin...somehow he ended up at Gettysburg, PA. He ws severely wounded in one of his legs and ankles and walked with a limp the rest of his life. I have his CW record from the National Archives. In the summer of 1870, he moved to Edgewood, TX with with his daughter's family and others. He died July 3,1882 in Terrell,TX on the 19th anniversary of Pickett's charge at Gettysburg.

I have a tree at Ancestry.com my tree name is ' Charles Smith b1804 ' where I have pictures of my relative and of the 21St Regt/ info and pictures . He enlisted as a private and was wounded twice . The battle of the Wilderness left shoulder and battle of Cedar Creek under right eye , blinded in right eye but continue to serve till end of war . Was on a two month leave headed back when at Demopolis Al. learned Lee surrendered he turned back paroled Meridian Ms.

A. C. Ardrey, my husband's great-grandfather, fought in the 21st Mississippi from the very beginning of the war (June 1861) until the end when he was captured at Sailor's Creek in April 1865 just before Appomattox. He was sent to a prison camp in Ohio and was paroled in June 1865. After a few years in Woodville MS he ended up in Dallas TX where he became a prominent citizen/businessman. Quite a remarkable story of heroism and survival.

This was my Great Great Grand Uncle who was from Woodville, MS. I learned about 8 years ago the place where he died in 1862. He died in a hospital in Richmond, VA and is buried somewhere in the Richmond area. I have found no records of him in the records located at the Natl Park Service. I did find a William James Dawson in one listing but it stated that he was from Georgia. Is this is an error then that could be him.

Pvt. Jacob W. Enlow – Age 27, wounded in the arm July 2, 1863

My Maternal Great-Great-Granpa Neavel (sometimes spelled NEVILLE) served in the 21st between August of 1862 and 1865, mustering out in the early summer of '65. He enlisted in the town of Corinth with a friend of his who was killed at the Peach orchard at Gettysburg. He was wounded twice, went through the remiander of the war, mustering out in Georgia in 1865. I have his flintlock musket and bayonet the he carried during the war, as well as a Spencer rifle taked from a Union soldier at Chicamuaga, and our family iv very proud of his war service.

1828-1863 Commissioned as Captain of Company E on 6 June 1861 in Woodville. Mortally wounded in the bowels during the Battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, and died in the field hospital the next day. His body was returned to Woodville and buried in January of 1864. He was the nephew of Jefferson Davis and was carrying his uncle's sword from the Mexican War.

Brother of William Randolph 'Buck' Crenshaw, my great, great grandfather. Died of his wounds in Virginia. Enlisted while a student at Ole Miss. Marker at the Sherrill Cemetery east of Paynes, Mississippi (Tallahatchie County). I have a photo of him.

John Thomas Neely Born September 12, 1844 Son of Cicero M. Neely and Nancy Gattis Charleston, MS John Thomas Neely was the eigth of ten children. When John Thomas was seven years old, his father died (age 43) and when he was 12, his mother died (age 44). The Civil War began April 12, 1861. John Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army August 15, 1862 (17 years, 11 months old). He was a Private in the Tallahatchie Rifles, Mississippi 21st Infantry, Company F. His brothers Allen Gattis, James Edmond and possibly Charles Cicero also served. James Edmond was killed. John Thomas was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and was captured by Union troops on July 4. He was sent to Seminary Hospital in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where his left leg was amputated below the knee. He was transferred to a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in October 1863 and on January 12, 1864 he was paroled (a prisoner swap) to a Richmond, Virginia hospital. On March 25, 1863 he was furloughed to Mississippi and did not return to active duty. (Note: J.T. Neely died in 1913. We have photo of J.T. Neely with family (circa 1910) with wooden leg and Southern Cross of Honor medal. Henry Harper (Hal) Simmons joined Tallahatchie Rifles in April 1861. On July 3, 1863 was a Lt. of company F, wounded in leg, captured July 4, 1863. He was exchanged in 1864, promoted to Captain, but did not serve any further active duty. Released from CSA April 1865. Buried in Coleman County, Texas.

Benjamin was severely wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg December 11, 1862. He was shot through both legs.

William and his older brother Benjamin enlisted in Captain William Dudley’s Infantry Company at Camden Mississippi in July 1861. In Virginia, Captain Dudley’s Company became Co. G in the 21st Mississippi Infantry. However, before he saw any action with the 21st Mississippi, William Hearst fell sick and after an extended illness was discharged from the regiment in November 1861. He reenlisted in April 1862 and served in Co. C, 40th Mississippi Infantry for the remainder of the war.

James was conscripted into the Confederate army at Bovina, Mississippi on September 1, 1862 "for the war". Leaving his wife Louisa and daughter Emma behind in Vicksburg. He arrived at the 21st Mississippi at Brucetown, Virginia on October 23, 1862. Due to illness, possibly heatstroke, he was not at Gettysburg. He was captured at Fredericksburg on May 3, 1863 and exchanged back to the Confederate army on May 21, 1863. He returned to the 21st Mississippi and was at Appomattox when Lee surrendered on April 12, 1865. After the war he worked as a carpenter in Vicksburg until his death on March 23, 1903 and is buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg.

Wounded at Battle of Chickamunga where his left arm was amputated on 20 Sep 1863. Moved to Fort Bend County, Texas where he died 27 Apr 1931. I have a picture of him and his three brothers (also veterans of 21st Mississippi) taken at a Confederate reunion in Houston, Texas in 1892. His full name was Burienne Fitzpatrick Stuart born 26 Jun 1842 in Wilkinson County, Mississippi.

after the service he lived his life in Copiah Springs, Mississippi until his death at the age of 83. He didn't die from old age, but rather from burns he sustained in a fire.

William has one card in his archival file. He was born in 1825 in Chotaw Co Alabama. He would have been about 35 when he enlisted. Time and place is not known. His Pension papers are filed but are difficult to read. His obit says that he died in a Confederate Veterans home on 29 March 1876. He was my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

Born,29 Feb 1836 Jackson Co. Georgia. Moved to Union Co. Mississippi about 1857. Inlisted 16 May 1861 at New Albany, Mississippi, fought in Battle of Fredricksburg, Virginia in Dec 1862. Detached Service, employed as a nurse at Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia also at the General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Va. After the war he moved to Texas and settled in Van Zandt Co. where he died 14 Feb 1917.

My G-G-G-G Uncle. I have a picture of a headstone at Wikin's Cemetary in Union County. It has no birth or death dates. It does have his MUS rank. It also has 21 MS Co K. There were only 2 survivors of Co K from what I have researched. I don't even know if he is buried there. Any information on Co K please point me to it. Thanks.

G-G-Uncle. From New Albany Greys. Enl 5-16-1861. Was in hospital @ Camp Winder (Richmond) 7-4-62 to 8-26-62, probably wounded @ Malvern Hill during 7-Days battle.Probably captured at Gettysburg as he is AWOL in Aug. 1863. 3-1-1865 took Oath of Allegiance. Col. Brandon was in this unit.

My great-great grandfather. He died following the war ''..he having died of disease contracted in service...'' and his widow Martha Huffman Parrish was granted a pension by U.S. House of Representative Private Claims, Vol. 3.
