Samuel McKinney Gladney was born in Fairfield County, South Carolina on the 15th of August 1825. His family moved to Alabama; where his parents died, age 12. Raised by his uncle in Aberdeen, Miss. Samuel was educated and graduated University of Pennsylvania Medical College, Class of 1852. He returned home to practice, but when the war broke out, he joined the Confederate forces as a member of the 27th Regiment of Mississippi. Dr. Gladney was stationed at a small fort hospital at Chattanooga for a few months.He became a member of the Army of Tennessee under General Braxton Bragg.With his Army, General Bragg attempted the invasion of Kentucky during August, September and October, 1862.They were driven back by the superior Union forces under General D. C. Buell and forced to retreat from the state.Dr. Gladney was captured at the battle of Perryville, Kentucky, and sent to a 'Northern' prison. ▬ He was married to Samantha Fowler (10 December 1861), this union had a daughter, Mary. Dr. Samuel McKinney Gladney died in 1884 near Knoxville, Tennessee.

Captured in the Battle of Lookout Mountain 11-24-1863 Died at Rock Island POW Camp Jan. 11, 1864

Augustine was 15 years old when he joined with three other kin on 10 August 1861 at Ellisville, Jones County Mississippi in Capt. A McLemore's Company [Rosinheel]*. This unit became Co B 27th Regt. Miss. Infantry. In the last days of the war it was consolidated and became the 24th Regt. Miss Inf. Augustine was paid and discharged on 13 Dec. 1861, probably because he was underage.

Evander was 25 years old when he enlisted in Jones County Miss. on 10 August 1861. Enlisting in Capt. A McLemore's Co. [ Rosinheel], which became Co B. 27th Regt. CMR for Nov.- Dec. 1862 states he is sick at Mrs. Daniels, 12 miles West of Shelbyville, Tenn. left by Surgeons Orders. In Jan. 1863 he is present in his company. He dies at Fairgrounds Hosp. of consumption on 30 March 1863. He is buried at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Fulton Co. Ga.

John was about 20 years old when he and three other members of his family joined Capt. A McLemore's Co. [Rosinheels]*for the war. This unit became Co. B 27th Regt. Miss. Infantry. John was granted a 20 day sick leave on 6 March 1862. In the battle of Franklin Tenn., he was wounded by cannon fire. Injuring his left thigh and right wrist. He was captured and sent to the Military Prison at Louisville, Ky. and on to Camp Chase. He was released on 10 March 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog.

Meshack enlisted with his brother Evander on 10 August 1861 at Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi.On 5 Sept. 1861 he was left sick in Dunlap Tenn. per surgeons orders. Present in Camp Feb. 1863.Was in Warrington Florida in Jan. 1862 as a Carpenter building a hospital.

Noel was born 22 Aug. 1822. He has 7 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 8 July 1862 in Jones Co. Miss. by Capt. Amos McLemore for 3 years. He would have been about 39 years old. On 15 Mar 1863 he is sent to the hospital per surgeon's orders, no dx given. He seerved the entire war and was active in the Tullahoma, Atlanta and Carolina Campaigns. He died 8 Oct 1897 and is buried in the Gandy Cem. in Jones County. Miss. We are related thru a distant marriage.

This was my 2nd great grandfather and could be listed as Marlin v Hill.

Amos was 22 years old and the brother in law of Evander Gandy. He enlisted with several kin on 10 August 1861 at Ellisville,Jones County Mississippi for the war. Enlisting in Capt. A Mclemore's Company, [Rosinhell]*. He was discharged for disability at Camp, Miss on 6 Jan 1862. Nature of disability not given.

My great-great-great-great grandfather was Amos McLemore of the 27th Mississippi. He was killed in 1862 by a deserter, Newt Knight.

Served for the Confederate States of America. Enlisted July 22, 1862 and served with the ' Jones County Rosin Heels' Co. B 27th Infantry. He was wounded and captured on October 10, 1862 during a skirmish with Union soldiers near Harrodsburg, Kentucky. He was shipped to Vicksburg, Mississippi aboard the S.S. Metropolitan as a prisoner of war on November 12, 1862 where he later died of his wounds. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Soldier's Rest in Vicksburg, Grave #472. This plot is the final resting place of an estimated 5,000 Confederate soldiers that died of sickness or wounds. His eldest son, William S. Quick (CSA), was killed five days earlier after being fatally wounded at Perryville, Kentucky.

William S. Quick enlisted 10 August 1861 at Ellisville, MS in the Rosin Heels, Company B, 27th Mississippi Infantry. He was fatally wounded at Perryville, Kentucky and died 6 Dec 1862 after having his leg amputated in the Perryville Hospital.

William Was from Lauderdale County Alabama. Enlisted at 33 years of age on 5 March 1862. He died at Mobile, Ala [ date unknown] records reflect between 1 Oct & Dec 1862. He was a patient in the CSA Hospital in Mobile. Probably died of disease. He is described as 5 foot 11 inches tall, blue eyes, dark hair and fair complexion. He was the husband of Frances E Thomas, my 3rd cousin 4 x removed.

1840-1862 Born in Tennessee. Enlisted in July 1861 in Pontotoc County. Died in hospital at Pensacola, Florida on 8 March 1862.

Henry C. Hendrix was my maternal grandmother's father. He enlisted on April 23, 1862 in Carthage, Ms. His older brother John Wesley Hendrix also enlisted the same day in Co. E, 27th Mississippi Infantry. He was captured in Chattanooga on Nov. 24, 1863 and was sent to Rock Island Barracks as a POW. Pvt Hendrix served at the Battle of Perryville KY and the Battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Kennasaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesborough, and Franklin, TN. He surrendered in North Carolina with Gen Joseph E Johnston and returned home to Pea Ridge Mississippi after the war ended. He then plowed his land barefooted with a homemade plow and oxen and raised 4 daughters the youngest of which was Livie Mars Hendrix my maternal grandmother who war born in 1880 and died in 1942 before I was born in 1947. My Mother, Irene Lindsay MacMaster used to talk about him when I was young. She said he wore a Confederate uniform and he used to show her a $20 gold piece while she sat on his lap at the age of 9 before her family moved to Texas after the boll weevel destroyed the Mississippi cotton crops in 1914.

John Wesley Hendrix was the maternal grandfather of my mother, Frances Moody. She was born in Louisville, MS in 1920 and is still living. John Wesley was taken prisoner at the battle of Lookout Mountain (Chattanooga) and was imprisoned in Rock Island, IL. He was wounded in a previous battle and hospitalized in Mobile, AL.

Sent to interior hospital 2 Feb 1863 Assigned duty as Hospital Nurse in Shelbyville TN - 24 Mar 1863 Taken as a prisoner of war in Shelbyville on 27 June 1863. Shown on a list of prisoners forwarded from Franklin, TN to Brig. Gen'l Robert R. Mitchell at Nashville, TN - 30 Jun - 1 July 1863.

Born 1838 in Warren Co., Georgia. Enlisted at Jackson, Hinds Co., Mississippi on 6 Aug 1861. Died in Perryville, Boyle Co., Kentucky on 16 Jan 1863 from wound taken in hip joint during the Battle of Perryville on 8 Oct 1862.

John Williams enlisted on April 23, 1862 at Carthage, MS. He absent because of illness and sent to the hospital at Knoxville on October 26, 1862, by November he had died at Ringoll Hospital.

According to information in the WPA Manuscripts for Jefferson Davis & Covington Counties MS, W. L. Applewhite was a member of Co. F from Covington Co. and was killed at Mumfordville during the Civil War. In a list of Johnson's Division, Brantly's Brigade, Lt. Woodward Applewhite is listed as being wounded. This probably happened on the night of 30 Nov 1864 at the Battle of Franklin on the Harpeth River. In the memoirs of Capt. William Wallace McMillan, in which he details his service during the Civil War and his captivity, he lists 30 officers of the Confederate Army who were all wounded (most in the battles of Franklin and Nashville TN) and captured and were then paroled at Camp Chase Ohio on 18 Mar 1865. After being paroled, they traveled by box car from Columbus to Baltimore, and then on the deck of a steamer down the Chesapeake and up the James River to Richmond VA. From there, the greater number in the party traveled together on foot to Chester SC and on. In this list he names W. L. Applewhite, LT. F 27th Miss. He notes that some of the party were very weak and that there was seldom enough food to be found. Apparently, Woodard was one of these and did not make it home.

He was born in about 1843. Would like to receive information about the battles that he may have been in during the war. I understand he was with Covington County group. He survived the war, married and had 11 children. He died in 1913.

Bartlette was abt. 28 when he enlisted at Mobile, Ala. on 13 May 1862. Enlisted by J.B. Kennedy for three years or the war. 30 June 1862 he is sick in hospital in Kentucky. 10 April 1863 rejoined his unit after being AWOL. He had been to sick to make the journey to rejoin his unit. 24 Nov. 1863, Absent, Captured at Chattanooga , Lookout Mountain. 30 Nov. 1863, sent to Louisville Ky. for exchange.

William was wounded and captured at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky October 8, 1862. After his exchange he rejoined the 27th and fought with the regiment until his capture at the Battle of Lookout Mountain November 24, 1863. He spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war at Rock Island Barracks POW camp.

John was born near Beaver Dam, Clark Co. Miss. He was 22 years old when he enlisted at Paulding, Miss on 9 Mar 1862. As a Pvt in Co H 27th Miss. Infantry. He was captured on 24 Nov 1863 at Chattanooga Tenn at the battle of lookout Mountain. Transferred to Rock Island Ill. Sent to New Orleans La for exchange. John is related to me by marriage.

Bitham was born 1828 in Butler County, Georgia. The 1860 census finds him in Smith County, Miss at age 32. He has 21 items in his archival file. He enlisted 7 April 1862 at Turnersville, Miss. enlisted for 3 years by Capt. Nixon. On 9 April he is in the Atlanta Georgia area and is sent to the hospital by the regimental surgeon. He died 25 May 1863 in the Empire Hospital at Atlanta Ga. The cause of death is not stated. The 27th was stationed at Pensacola Florida for its first year. It was then engaged in the Tullahoma Campaign before the Atlanta Campaign. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 2 x removed.

Hugh Nathaniel Mclaurin enlisted Co H 10-2-1861, Marion, Jasper Co, MS, captured 12-16-1864 Nashville, held at Camp Douglas and released 6-19-1865, returned and lived in Jones Co MS and raised his family in the Erata area. DOB 12-9-1843 Died 12-6-1925. Enlisted same day as brother James Calvin, and cousin John WIlliam Mclaurin, one other cousin enlisted in H, Calvin Mclaurin. Both cousins died of disease during war. Brother survived the war. Info found through family history and in Robert C Wells book.

He was wounded in the Battle of Perryville on 10/8/1862 and died on 10/16/1862 at the hospital in Harrodsburg, KY. Desperately trying to find burial site....

My Great,Great,Great,Great, Grandfather M.C. Whittle was in the Confederate soilers home in Ardmore Oklahoma.

Andrew Jackson Harris raised Company I, Twenty-seventh Mississippi Infantry (Harris Rebels), for the Confederate Army and commanded it at Pensacola, Mobile, Tennessee and Kentucky. He resigned from the service in 1863 because of poor health but was able to return to the army, this time as a private in the Fourth Mississippi Cavalry, by the fall of 1863. By the spring of 1864 he had left the army again but returned once more in August of that year to serve in Duff's regiment for three months.

Enlisted by Capt A J Harris on Oct 28, 1861 for a period of 3 years or until the end of the war; died July 10, 1863 in a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

James was born 27 Mar 1837 in South Carolina. He has 9 items in his archival file. * It is noted that that Co K was formerly Co B of the 5th Battalion Miss. Infantry and was transferred to the 27th on 6 May 1862. He enlisted 11 Dec 1861 at Aberdeen Monroe County by J.B. Sell. He served honorably for the duration of the war. The regiment listed 2206 men in its ranks. He died 9 Sept 1920 and is buried in the Lann Cem. Splunge, Monroe Co. Miss. He is in my family tree on a remote limb.

Pvt. Nash is my GG Uncle. I would like some more info concerning him and his unit, if someone wishes to share. His headstone indicates he was in the 27th Co. K and he was supposedly with the 27th at the battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro) Thanks.
