Martin Bridges was my GGG Grandfather. I have been researching my family genealogy and have found some interesting facts about my ancestors. Vicki B Grammer

Grandpa was killed at Shiloh by an incoming Canon Ball.

Survived the war and became a doctor. Buried in the old Millasps family cemetery, Copiah County, MS.

Thomas was with the Newton C.Hornet's 39th Infantry.

My great-grandfather, Walter S. Turner, served in the 39th Mississippi Infantry Regiment as a young enlisted man during the Civil War. He was 20 years old at the time of the Battle of Port Hudson, LA which he described in detail in his diary covering the period of May 21-July 25, 1863 (a copy of which I hold). After the surrender of the Confederates on July 8 , he was parolled on July 14, 1863. He died at Winona, MS on February 21, 1920 at age 76.

richmond Walker was taken prisoner at Fort Hudson in Baton Rough and sent to Johnson's Island where he remained a prisoner for 2 years. Do you have any pictures, papers etc. of this group? Thank you. Nancy Archer

Samuel enlisted on 5 April 1862 in Westville, Simpson Co. Miss. in Capt Robert Jacob's Co. This became Co. A 39th Regt. Miss. Inf. He died fighting in ' Sear's Brigade in the Battle of Franklin 30 Nov 1864. May his soul rest in peace.

I believe he was simply a private. He was captured on July 5, 1864, at Marietta, Georgia and sent first to Kentucky, then to Camp Douglas, IL as POW.

S.A.'Shade' Thames is my direct paternal GGGGrandfather. He died December 11,1873 at the age of 34 years old, leaving wife and 8 children, from leg wound he received in the Battle of Atlanta. It is my belief he was wounded at the Battle of Allatoona Pass October 5,1864. He was parole from Allatoona, according to Application to Pension for Widows, on November 8,1864. He is buried in the Thames Cemetery in Simpson County,Mississippi.

GREAT-GREAT-GREAT GRANDFATHER JOHN WESLEY CAWTHON, SR enlisted and was mustered into service in Brandon, MS as a Sergeant on March 16, 1862 into Company B of the 39th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, the same regiment as his half brothers Nelson Taylor Liles and George Washington Stuart Liles. GWS Liles was also in Company B with John Wesley Cawthon. His enlistment was for three years or the war. All three brothers were captured at Port Hudson in July 1863. John Wesley Cawthon was paroled per an undated “List of non-commissioned officers and privates, prisoners of war who have been this day released upon their paroles, Port Hudson, July 1863” He is reported Present from April 30 to August 31, 1864 and had drawn 1st Sgt’s pay from December 31st, 1863 to May 1, 1864. John Wesley Cawthon has several Company Muster Roll reports that show him Absent Without Leave including one dated January and February 1864 which shows him AWOL since January 18, 1864. On December 15th, 1864 he is listed as a “2nd Lieutenant on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Nashville, TN, captured by forces under Major General Thomas, commanding Department of the Cumberland and forwarded to Captain S.E. Jones, Add’l A.D.C., Louisville KY, December 18, 1864.” From Louisville, KY he was received at the Military Prison, Johnson’s Island, Ohio on December 20, 1864. His half-brother, Nelson Taylor Liles was also held at Johnson’s Island, having been there since his capture at Port Hudson. John Wesley Cawthon, Sr. was released from Johnson’s Island upon his Oath of Allegiance to the United States on June, 16, 1865. He was described as 34 years old, dark hair, eyes and complexion and 5 ft, 11 inches tall.

This is my GGG GRANDDAD. Born in 1793 in South Carolina and died finding for the Confederacy in 1865. He is buried at Camp Chase cemetery in Columbus Ohio

After his 1 year of service with the 10th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, half great-great-great granduncle George Washington Stuart Liles reenlisted on May 1, 1862 in Brandon Mississippi for a 2 year period as a private in Company B 39th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, the same company and regiment as his older half-brother, GREAT-GREAT-GREAT GRANDFATHER JOHN WESLEY CAWTHON, SR. Along with his older half-brother, JW Cawthon, Sr, GWS Liles, now a Sergeant was paroled per an undated “List of non-commissioned officers and privates, prisoners of war who have been this day released upon their paroles, Port Hudson, Louisiana, July 12th and 13th, 1863” Company Muster Rolls show him as a 2nd Sergeant and present from March 1862 to December 31, 1862 but then additional Company Muster Rolls state that in January and February 1864 he had not reported since his parole at Port Hudson and reflect him as a Private and that he had drawn pay up to December 31, 1862. He was reported as a 2nd Sergeant and AWOL from September 15, 1863 till May 20, 1864. Strangely he is then reported present as a Private on the Company Muster Roll for April 30 to August 31, 1864. GWS Liles was captured again at Blakely, Alabama on April 9, 1865 and was received at Ship Island on April 15th, 1865. was transferred from Ship Island, Mississippi to Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 1, 1865. He appears as a Private on a Roll of Prisoners of War of Companies A, B, C, F, G and I, 39th Mississippi Regiment, Confederate States Army, commanded by Lt. Col. W. E. Ross, surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama by Lieut. General R. Taylor, CSA to Major General E.R.S. Canby, USA May 4, 1865 and paroled at Jackson, Mississippi, May 12, 1865.

Mar 29, 1839 – Mar 17, 1899. Born Rankin County Mississippi, had a light complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, and stood 5’ 9”. Enlisted Mar 16, 1862 near Brandon MS. He was appointed to adjutant on Oct 20, 1862. He was captured at Port Hudson on July 9, 1863 and sent to New Orleans on the steamer Suffolk on Jul 14, 1863 and arrived on Jul 16, 1863. On Sep 13, 1863 sent to Fort Columbus, New York Harbor and then on Sep 21, 1863 sent to Johnson's Island ear Sandusky Oh. He was transferred to Point Lookout Md on Mar 21, 1865 for exchange. He was received at Fort Delaware on Apr 28, 1865 from Point Lookout. He took the oath at Fort Delaware and was released on Jun 12, 1865. Parents: • Samuel T. Melvin, son of John Thomas Melvin Sr., son of Daniel James Melvin Sr. • Jane Lewis Melvin. Married Nov 26, 1836 in Rankin Mississippi • Step father – Jesse Womack

This is my great grandfather who also had 3 brothers---Issac Ezekiel, Thomas Jefferson, and William---all in Co C, 39th Miss Inf. Thomas J. applied for pension in 1912 and indicated severely wounded at Pine Mountain while in 20th Miss. Issac E. was captured at Port Hudson and sent to Johnsons Island, Ohio--died in Texas in 1911, CT died in Tx in 1917, and TJ died about 1912 or 1913 in Scott Co, Miss. William just disappeared.

1 of 4 brothers in 39th--including-Charles Taylor, Issac Ezekiel, Thomas Jefferson---cannot find William's middle name but believe he died sometime after 1862. Was about 18 or 19 during this time.

The younger half-brother of GREAT-GREAT-GREAT GRANDFATHER JOHN WESLEY CAWTHON, SR., half great-great-great granduncle Nelson Taylor Liles enlisted at at Jackson, MS age 24 in Company C of the 39th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry on April 1, 1863 listing his hometown as Morton, Mississippi. He reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on January 27, 1862. He was captured on July 9, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and held in Johnson Island Prisoner of War Prison in Ohio until March 21, 1865. After his capture, he appears on a “List of Confederate Officers sent from Port Hudson to New Orleans on the 14th day of July, 1863 per Steamer “Suffolk.” The next record shows him on a register of “Prisoners of War at New Orleans, LA” on July 16, 1863, being held in the Custom House. This same document shows him transferred August 9, 1863 and returned August 13, 1863 to and from the Police Jail in New Orleans. Then he is “sent to New York per order of General Banks, September 20, 1863, Register No. 870, Department of the Gulf, page 91. The following record shows that he “Appears on a List of Confederate Officers, Prisoners of War, going North on Steamer “Clinton”, Sunday, September 20, 1863. List dated Department of the Gulf, Office of Provost Sheriff, New Orleans, LA, September 18, 1863. Confined in the Custom House.” This record also reads: “Indorsement shows: “List of 50 CS officers sent to NY per Str. “Clinton” 20 Sept., ‘63” Next, he appears on a “Roll of Prisoners of War at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor, received from New Orleans, LA, Sept 29, 1863, and sent to Johnson’s Island, Ohio, September 29, 1863” Then, he appears on a “Roll of Prisoners of War at Depot Prisoners of War, near Sandusky, Ohio and transferred to Point Lookout, March 21, 1865. Johnson’s Island, Ohio, Register No. 2, page 88” An additional record that goes along with this one says, “Nelson T. Lisle, 1st Lt, Co C, 39th Regiment, Mississippi, appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Johnson’s Island, Ohio, and forwarded to Point Lookout, Maryland, for exchange, March 21, 1865. Roll dated Hdqrs, US Forces, Johnson’s Island, Ohio, March 21, 1865” His next location is reflected as “Roll of Prisoners of War received at Fort Delaware, Del, from Point Lookout, Maryland April 28, 1865” Then finally, his “name appears as a signature to an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed to at Fort Delaware, Del” This record shows his place of residence as Scott County, Mississippi and that he had a dark complexion and hair, grey eyes and was 6 ft tall. He was released June 12, 1865, having spent almost exactly 2 years as a prisoner of war. The POW records show him both as Lt, 1st Lt and 2nd Lt but as his appointment is shown above, he became a 2nd Lt, January 27, 1862. An additional record created while he was a POW at Johnson’s Island, Ohio is dated August 20, 1864 and his name appears on an “Inspection Report of Sears’ Brigade, French’s Division, Army of Tennessee, commanded by Brig. General C.W.Sears: Report dated in front of Atlanta, GA: Absent commissioned officers accounted for: Prisoner of War, July 9, 1863”

I added him to this unit in error. His three brothers served in the 39th. Stites was in the 10th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. I couldn't find a way to delete him here. Sorry for the error.

Family history unknown. Please message me w/any info! Possibly born 1829-1830 in GA, maybe NC. Married Lucretia Banks and moved to Scott Co, MS. 4 children. Enlisted on May 6, 1862 in Jackson, MS by Capt. Collum for 3 years. Private in C Co. of 39th MS Volunteers. Captured at Port Hudson, LA on July 9, 1863 and released on July 12 or 13, 1863. Captured by 23rd A.C. Dept. Ohio near Jonesboro, GA on Sept. 5, 1864 and turned over to Army of the Cumberland on Sept. 8, 1864. Prisoner in Nashville, TN and transferred to Louisville, KY in Oct. 1864. Sent to Camp Douglas, IL where he died between March 1st and March 15th, 1865, buried in Grave #938 in Block 3, Chicago City Cemetery.

Henry was my great-great-grandfather. He served in Company E, also known as Barry's Guards, from January 1862 until the close of the war. He married Delilah Beasley in December 1857 and together on their farm they raised 13 children. Henry died on Christmas Day 1907 and is buried in Old Gallilee Cemetery in Copiah County.

My G grandfather J. B. Butler served with 39th MS regiment infantry, Co. F, the Pearl River Guards and mustered in on April 30, 1862 in Simpson County, Ms under Captain C. B. Banks.

Abraham was about 25 years old from Simpson County Mississippi. He has 13 cards in his archival file. Some report him as AWOl when he was a POW. Enlisted 30 April 1862. Captured at Port Hudson La. 9 July 1863. Paroled and rejoined his unit which surrendered at Citronelle, 19 May 1865. His first wife Dicy Brown was my 2nd cousin 4 x removed. She died in 1859. He then remarried a Elizabeth Gardner. Only one son was born to him. His name was Jefferson Davis Brown born 1861.

G.B. (Green Berry) May was drafted in the first conscription in April 1862 and served in the battles of Corinth and Vicksburg, Ms. He was discharged at Port Hudson, La. We still have his Colt pistol that has been passed down through the generations. He is buried at Mendenhall, Ms.

Archibald Wade Ware was born in 1830 in Stewart County, Georgia. He and most of his siblings moved into the area of the Smith-Simpson County line, in the southwest corner of Smith County. He heeded the call and joined the 39th in late April of 1862. He was of course at Port Hudson and surrendered there in July 1863. He rejoined the 39th at Enterprise for the exchange and was at all the fights subsequent to the winter of 63-64. He was captured/surrendered at Fort Blakeley and spent an all-expense paid month-long vacation on the sands of Ship Island. Ironically, the thirty-four hundred prisoners were kept under guard by members of the 1st and 3rd Louisiana Native Guard, USCT, the same regiments who had attempted to attack the extreme left wing of the defenses of Port Hudson on May 27th, 1863. This position was manned by the 39th Mississippi under Shelby. It was an impossible assault, and the Native Guard was repulsed three times with great slaughter with virtually no casualties for the 39th.Interestingly, Arch had two sons by his second wife whom he named Shelby and Lowrey(commander of a couple of his brothers in the the Bloody Sixth). Arch Ware was my great-great grandfather.

Joseph Wilson Price was a private in Company G 'Price's Rebels' 39th Miss. Infantry

Corporal Reynolds was captured 5 Oct 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign at the Battle at Allatoma in Georgia. He has three POW records. One indicates he was transferred to Camp Chase on 22 Oct 1864.

Was a member of Price''s Rebels. Signed up on May 1, 1862. Lived in Rankin County, Mississippi.

John N. Terrell died at Port Hudson,LA on July 14, 1863. His body was never sent home.

My Great Great Grandfather

Rausel Crisenberry Presley joined Co. I, 39th Mississippi Infantry when he was 17 years old in November 1864. In his old age, R.C. lived at the Confederate Soldiers Home at Beauvoir on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Upon his death July 7, 1937, he was buried in the Confederate Cemetery there. R.C. had two older brothers that also served in the Civil War. Brother Elias H. Presley was a member of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry, and brother Andrew J. Presley was a member of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry.

George was born 19 Jul 1832 in Elbert Co. Georgia. The 1860 census has him as 28 y/o in Hinds Co. Miss. the Post Office is at Terry. He enlists on 29 April 1862 at Jackson, Miss. for 3 years. Enlisted by W.E. Ross. He served until the end of the war. Surrendering at Citronelle and paroled at Jackson Miss. 19 May 1865. Battles: Vicksburg, Nashville and Atlanta Campaigns. When it was formed the Regiment was unarmed except for 41 men armed with flint-lock muskets. We are related by a distant marriage. He died at Bolton, Hines Co. Miss in 1919 and is buried in the Salmon Cem, Raymond, Hines Co. Mis.
