Author/Arthur Moore Gandy enlisted at Oak Bowery, near Ellisville Jones Co Mississippi on 13 March 1862. He was captured at the battle of Corinth and sent to Columbus Ky. He was exchanged on 8 Nov. 1862. He had a break down and went AWOL. He rejoined his unit which consolidated the survivors of the 40th 31st & 3rd Regiments to form the new Consolidated 3rd Regt. Miss. Infantry. He was in Co H of this unit when it surrendered at Citronell, Alabama on 4 May 1865.

My 2nd great grandfather was a member of the 40 th Mississippi Infantry. He enlisted at Oak Bowen on the 13 th day of March 1862 under Captain Clayton to serve for a period of three years or until war ended. I have a three day pass that he was issued from Captain Clayton with this information. He was to rejoin the regiment in Meridian.

He was my 5th great-grandfather on my father's mother's side. He also served in Captain Clayton's Mississippi Regiment which was known as Jasper's Defender's.

Originally enlisted in 16th MS Inf Regt. Wounded at Sharpsburg, 17 Sep 1862. After recovery, transferred to Co A, 40th MS Inf Regt. Captured at battle of Big Black, MS and sent to POW camp at Ft Delaware.

Ulmer is my great great,great-grandfather . The 'Official Records' I have seen unfortunately list him as 'John M. Ulmer' but there is no doubt that they are one in the same as his grave marker list this: SGT. Co. A. 40th MS. INF. CSA. As to the Sergeant designation above, I am going by what is on his grave stone and a record a confederatevets.com and the parole list from Vicksburg so I am just assuming that is correct. He was captured at Vicksburg on 7-4-1863 then paroled. I don't see any other action after that so he may have been the only Confederate soldier to honor his parole pledge and stop fighting, but I doubt it. He is listed on the Vicksburg National Park parole records:http://www.nps.gov/vick/learn/historyculture/confederate-parole-records-u.htm He is buried is a small family cemetery which I maintain in Clarke, County MS about 5 miles west of Shubuta, MS. Son of John H. Barnett of Standing Pine

I would love to know anything about the 40th Miss. or this person that anyone may share.

My 4x grandfather,Private James D. Gunn fought at the Battle of Vicksburg. He was part of the Pine ? Company B 40th regiment out of Leake County. He was also a prisoner of war. I have documentation to prove and DNA and census to prove.

I am looking for any information on this name or on Company B/Regiment.

William originally joined his brother Benjamin and enlisted in the 21st Mississippi Infantry in July 1861. Due to illness, he was discharged in November 1861. After his recovery, William enlisted in Co. C, 40th Mississippi Infantry. He would serve with the 40th Mississippi during the siege of Vicksburg and was captured when the city fell. After his exchange, he fought with the 40th through the Georgia Campaign. At the Battle of Franklin, he was captured again and was sent to Camp Douglas POW camp where he remained until June 18, 1865 and the end of the war.

E.C. Brister was born 12 Feb. 1838 and served in the 40th with 2 brothers and an uncle. He survived the war and died in 1912.

Samuel T. Brister, one of the 'Attala Gurads' was born 1814, died 1874. He served in the 40th with his oldest son, and three nephews. He is my great,great,great grandfather

Samuel, born 21 Oct 1831 served in the 40th with 2 brothers and an uncle. He was killed in action at the Battle of Franklin

William Brister, born 10 March 1836 served in the 40th with 2 brothers and an uncle. He was captured during engagement near Vicksburg 18 May 1863 and sent to prison in Alton, IL where he died of pneumonia 3 November 1863.

Jessie M Collins is shown on the roster as E. Collins. He joined the Steam Mill Rangers company E in August 1863 when he was 15 years old. He was paid the $50 bounty just like his older brother Jonathan Collins. In the records Jonathan Duren Collins is shown as Jessie D Collins but he went by J.D.Collins. The 15 year old Jessie was listed as sick during the Iuka and Corinth battles. He was killed May 22, 1863 during the second yankee assault on the Vicksburg fortifications. Jessie M Collins is buried in the Mississippi section at Soldiers Rest in Vicksburg, on the front row right. He had turned 16 in April 1863.

Jonathan joined the 5th Ms. Infantry first in October 1861, he received a discharge from the Regt. Surgeon because of debility in January 1863. He joined the Steam Mill Rangers in May 1863 and received a $50 bonus. He was present for Iuka and Corinth and was captured and paroled at Vicksburg. He was listed as AWOL like many others from the 40th and when he did return he was promoted to Sgt. The last roll for him in March/April shows that he was 'sick in the hospital' his pay was brought up to date for $154.96. He did not come back from the war. Some family history says that he is buried in a mass grave near Atlanta when the 40th was shot up pretty bad.

John was 30 Years old when he enlisted in Neshoba Co. Miss. on 5 May 1862. Enlisting as 2nd Sergeant he was promoted to 1st Sgt. on 1 Jan 1863. He was captured at Vicksburg 3 July 1963 and paroled as a POW. He was sick and went home and died of his illness on 5 Oct 1863. He is buried under his CSA gravestone in the community of Golden Grove, Neshoba Co. MIss. He is my 1st cousin 6 x removed.

Captured at Big Black Bridge, MS prior to fall of Vicksburg, and eventually went to Ft. Delaware, but was soon paroled, and went back to his regiment. Not sure if he was there till the end or not though. Moved to Arkansas soon after with his wife and 2 sons, William and James. Known as Michael or Mike. Also last name shows up in his records as Locklayer.

William Henry Pulley had a son born in 1870. His son Joseph Pulley was my Grandfather. The family goes back to Williamsburg Virginia in 1667.

William Stone was the twin brother of Andrew Jackson Stone who served in the same regiment. William was killed in the Peachtree Creek battle and Andrew was wounded.

Killed at Vicksburg,June 25, 1863. He is buried among the Confederate graves at the old Vicksburg Cemetery, now called Cedar Hill Cemetery. My 4th great - grandfather.

Abner Hammond Langford, born 24 Jan. 1833 in Georgia, the son of Joseph A. Langford and Elizabeth Herring served with brothers James E. Langford and Philip B. Langford and Uncles Young Marion Langford and Francis Franklin Langford in same unit.

Born 22 July 1836 in Buena Vista, Bibb County, Ga. He served with many members of his family in Company H including brother Young Marion Langford and 3 nephews James Langford, Philip Langford and Abner H. Langford. After the war moved from Leake County, Mississippi to live the remainder of his life with his family in Upshur County, Texas

Philip B. Langford born around 1843 in Georgia, the son of Joseph A. Langford and Elizabeth Herring served with brothers James E. Langford and Abner Hammond Langford and Uncles Young Marion Langford and Francis Franklin Langford in same unit.

Young Marion Langford was born 10 May 1831 in Buena Vista, Bibb County, Georgia, the son of James Langford. He moved to Leake County, Mississippi before the Civil War and joined Captain W. S. Parrott's 40th Regiment of Mississippi Volunteers, later known as Company H. Joined with brother Frank Langford and 3 nephews James Langford, Philip Langford and Abner H. Langford. He fought in battles from Mississippi to Tennessee to Illinois and was captured following the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi and signed his parole papers there on July 7, 1863. Of his brigade 121 were killed and 304 wounded. He was again again captured on Dec 16, 1864 near Nashville, Tennessee on the grounds of the State Capitol and was transferred to a Yankee prisoner of war camp in Point Lookout, Maryland where his own great-grandfather had arrived in the new world in the 1600's. He was finally released on June 5, 1865. He and his family moved to Upshur County, Texas in 1867. He was active in the Liberty Baptist Church Association and the Little Mound Baptist Church where he is buried. John (Burnes) Burns (1822-1864) Died in service at Academy Hospital in Marietta, GA on February 5th, 1864. A tombstone marker is in the Marietta Confederate Cemetery, though his actual burial location is unknown. The spelling of his surname was 'Burnes' prior to the Civil War and the family changed it to 'Burns' after the Civil War.

He was captured at Champions hill/Big Black battles and eventually died of typhoid at Ft. Delaware. Buried at Finn's Point as James Harold
